graph-diameterhirschpolytope

Let P⊆RdP\subseteq\mathbb R^dP⊆Rd be a bounded simple H-polytope with n≤2d+1n\le 2d+1n≤2d+1 inequalities. Simplicity means every vertex is tight on exactly ddd rows. Let iii be a describing row that is tight at two distinct vertices z1≠z2z_1\neq z_2z1=z2. Then every vertex uuu of PPP is ridge-visible to row iii, or is adjacent to a ridge-visible vertex.

Ridge-visible means uuu is tight on row iii, or tight on some other row that meets row iii inside PPP. The n≤2dn\le 2dn≤2d case (already proved) gives distance 000. For the remaining n=2d+1n=2d+1n=2d+1 layer, a non-visible simple vertex has all ddd tight rows far from iii. Leaving one tight row along its extreme ray hits a new inequality at an adjacent vertex. That entering row cannot be far: together with the original ddd far rows and the ≥d+1\ge d+1≥d+1 near rows contributed by z1,z2z_1,z_2z1,z2, that would require at least 2d+22d+22d+2 inequalities.

n≤2d+1⟹RV-distance≤1n\le 2d+1 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad \text{RV-distance}\le 1n≤2d+1⟹RV-distance≤1

for simple bounded H-polytopes, on any row attained at two vertices.

This is the first positive-distance layer of the ridge-visible recurrence that would unfold to a uniform polynomial via the proved dimension-drop. It does not treat n≥2d+2n\ge 2d+2n≥2d+2, where two pivots can collide on the same far row, and it does not by itself close the polynomial Hirsch conjecture.

Formalization Note Boundedness is used to guarantee that each extreme ray from a simple vertex hits a new inequality in finite time. The adjacent vertex is constructed by ray shooting in the leave-one dual-basis direction; the segment is the face cut out by the remaining d−1d-1d−1 tight equalities.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
