For coprime P, Q over a field, X·R·P = N·Q with R ≠ 0, deg R ≤ 2, deg N ≤ 3 is solvable iff max(deg P, deg Q) ≤ 2, or Q(0) = 0 and the max is ≤ 3

Let KKK be a field and P,Q∈K[X]P, Q \in K[X]P,Q∈K[X] coprime with Q≠0Q \neq 0Q=0. There are R,N∈K[X]R, N \in K[X]R,N∈K[X] with R≠0R \neq 0R=0, deg⁡R≤2\deg R \leq 2degR≤2, deg⁡N≤3\deg N \leq 3degN≤3 and XRP=NQXRP = NQXRP=NQ if and only if max⁡(deg⁡P,deg⁡Q)≤2\max(\deg P, \deg Q) \leq 2max(degP,degQ)≤2, or Q(0)=0Q(0) = 0Q(0)=0 and max⁡(deg⁡P,deg⁡Q)≤3\max(\deg P, \deg Q) \leq 3max(degP,degQ)≤3.

Proof. (⇒\Rightarrow⇒) As PPP and QQQ are coprime, Q∣XRQ \mid XRQ∣XR; write XR=QSXR = QSXR=QS. Cancelling QQQ gives N=SPN = SPN=SP, and S≠0S \neq 0S=0, so deg⁡Q+deg⁡S≤3\deg Q + \deg S \leq 3degQ+degS≤3 and deg⁡P+deg⁡S≤3\deg P + \deg S \leq 3degP+degS≤3. If Q(0)≠0Q(0) \neq 0Q(0)=0, the prime XXX divides QSQSQS but not QQQ, so X∣SX \mid SX∣S, deg⁡S≥1\deg S \geq 1degS≥1 and max⁡(deg⁡P,deg⁡Q)≤2\max(\deg P, \deg Q) \leq 2max(degP,degQ)≤2. (⇐\Leftarrow⇐) If the maximum is at most 222 take R=QR = QR=Q, N=XPN = XPN=XP; if Q(0)=0Q(0) = 0Q(0)=0 write Q=XQ1Q = XQ_1Q=XQ1 and take R=Q1R = Q_1R=Q1, N=PN = PN=P.

Novelty. An elementary fact about polynomials over a field; routine.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
