Interval partitions and their block-incidence map

For a natural number nnn, a nonempty interval of the ordered labels 1,…,n1,\ldots,n1,…,n is specified by endpoints i≤ji\leq ji≤j. An interval partition is a genuine partition in which every block is such an interval. Extend rational interval coefficients by zero on subsets that are not endpoint intervals, and define

Tint:QIn⟶QΠnint,(Tintc)(P)=∑I∈PcI.T_{\rm int}:\mathbb Q^{\mathcal I_n}\longrightarrow\mathbb Q^{\Pi_n^{\rm int}},\qquad (T_{\rm int}c)(P)=\sum_{I\in P}c_I.Tint:QIn⟶QΠnint,(Tintc)(P)=I∈P∑cI.

Here In\mathcal I_nIn is the set of all nonempty intervals and Πnint\Pi_n^{\rm int}Πnint the set of interval partitions. The bundle includes the elementary linearity proofs required to construct this map, but not its substantive kernel characterization or rank theorem. The definitions permit n=0n=0n=0; the separate rank theorem assumes n>0n>0n>0. Endpoint certificates constrain the blocks of actual partitions, rather than replacing partitions by unrestricted collections of intervals.

# Exact rank for interval partitions

Rows are nonempty intervals of Fin n, represented by their ordered
endpoints. Columns are genuine Finpartitions all of whose blocks carry an
endpoint certificate. This realizes compositions without choosing a cut-set
encoding.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
