Let DDD be a probability distribution on Z=X×YZ = X \times YZ=X×Y, let the cost satisfy 0≤c(y′,y)≤M0 \le c(y', y) \le M0≤c(y′,y)≤M, and let AAA be a symmetric deterministic learning algorithm whose losses are measurable. Let S=(z1,…,zm)∼DmS = (z_1, \dots, z_m) \sim D^mS=(z1,…,zm)∼Dm with m≥2m \ge 2m≥2 and let z∼Dz \sim Dz∼D be independent of SSS. Then for every index iii,

ES[(R(A,S)−Rloo(A,S))2]≤M22m+3M ES,z[ ∣ℓ(AS,z)−ℓ(AS∖i,z)∣ ].\mathbb E_S\bigl[(R(A,S) - R_{\mathrm{loo}}(A,S))^2\bigr] \le \frac{M^2}{2m} + 3M\,\mathbb E_{S,z}\bigl[\,|\ell(A_S, z) - \ell(A_{S^{\setminus i}}, z)|\,\bigr].ES[(R(A,S)−Rloo(A,S))2]≤2mM2+3MES,z[∣ℓ(AS,z)−ℓ(AS∖i,z)∣].

The expectation on the right is exactly the quantity that hypothesis stability (Definition 3) bounds, so this inequality turns hypothesis stability into a second-moment bound for the leave-one-out estimator.

Formalization Note Lemma 9 is stated for i,ji, ji,j with i≠ji \ne ji=j, which presupposes m≥2m \ge 2m≥2; this is a hypothesis here. The expectation ES,z\mathbb E_{S,z}ES,z is the integral against Dm⊗DD^m \otimes DDm⊗D.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
