This is the No-Cloning theorem.

Let H\mathcal HH be a finite-dimensional Hilbert space with dim⁡H≥2\dim\mathcal H\ge 2dimH≥2. A quantum operation from H\mathcal HH to H⊗H\mathcal H\otimes\mathcal HH⊗H is a map on operators of the form

ρ↦∑iEi ρ Ei†,∑iEi†Ei=I,\rho\mapsto\sum_i E_i\,\rho\,E_i^\dagger,\qquad \sum_i E_i^\dagger E_i=I,ρ↦i∑EiρEi†,i∑Ei†Ei=I,

with finitely many operators Ei:H→H⊗HE_i:\mathcal H\to\mathcal H\otimes\mathcal HEi:H→H⊗H. No quantum operation Φ\PhiΦ satisfies

Φ(∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣)=(∣ψ⟩⊗∣ψ⟩)(⟨ψ∣⊗⟨ψ∣)\Phi\big(|\psi\rangle\langle\psi|\big)=\big(|\psi\rangle\otimes|\psi\rangle\big)\big(\langle\psi|\otimes\langle\psi|\big)Φ(∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣)=(∣ψ⟩⊗∣ψ⟩)(⟨ψ∣⊗⟨ψ∣)

for every unit vector ∣ψ⟩∈H|\psi\rangle\in\mathcal H∣ψ⟩∈H.

The theorem shows that a quantum repetition code ∣ψ⟩↦∣ψ⟩⊗3|\psi\rangle\mapsto|\psi\rangle^{\otimes 3}∣ψ⟩↦∣ψ⟩⊗3 cannot exist, which motivates the subspace codes of the following sections.

Formalization Note States enter as density matrices, so the copy is required only up to a global phase. The class of operations is the source's general quantum operation, eq. (23). It contains the unitary-with-blank-ancilla operations of the proof. The hypothesis dim⁡H≥2\dim\mathcal H\ge2dimH≥2 excludes the one-dimensional space, where the identity map clones.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let ι\iotaι be a finite index set with decidable equality and at least two elements, ∣ι∣≥2|\iota| \ge 2∣ι∣≥2. A state space is Cι\mathbb{C}^\iotaCι with the standard Euclidean norm.

Hypothesis on Φ\PhiΦ. Φ\PhiΦ is a map sending ι×ι\iota\times\iotaι×ι complex matrices to (ι×ι)×(ι×ι)(\iota\times\iota)\times(\iota\times\iota)(ι×ι)×(ι×ι) complex matrices, i.e. an operator on Cι\mathbb{C}^\iotaCι goes to an operator on Cι⊗Cι\mathbb{C}^\iota\otimes\mathbb{C}^\iotaCι⊗Cι. It is assumed to be a channel in Kraus form: there exist m∈Nm\in\mathbb{N}m∈N and matrices E1,…,EmE_1,\dots,E_mE1,…,Em of size (ι×ι)×ι(\iota\times\iota)\times\iota(ι×ι)×ι such that

∑jEj†Ej=IιandΦ(ρ)=∑jEj ρ Ej†  for every matrix ρ.\sum_{j} E_j^\dagger E_j = I_\iota \quad\text{and}\quad \Phi(\rho)=\sum_j E_j\,\rho\,E_j^\dagger \ \text{ for every matrix } \rho.j∑Ej†Ej=IιandΦ(ρ)=j∑EjρEj†  for every matrix ρ.

Notation. For a vector ψ\psiψ, write ∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣|\psi\rangle\langle\psi|∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣ for the matrix with entries (a,b)↦ψaψb‾(a,b)\mapsto \psi_a\overline{\psi_b}(a,b)↦ψaψb. Write ψ⊗ψ\psi\otimes\psiψ⊗ψ for the vector on ι×ι\iota\times\iotaι×ι with entries (a,b)↦ψaψb(a,b)\mapsto\psi_a\psi_b(a,b)↦ψaψb.

Conclusion. It is not the case that every unit vector ψ∈Cι\psi\in\mathbb{C}^\iotaψ∈Cι (with ∥ψ∥=1\|\psi\|=1∥ψ∥=1) satisfies

Φ(∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣)=∣ψ⊗ψ⟩⟨ψ⊗ψ∣.\Phi\big(|\psi\rangle\langle\psi|\big)=|\psi\otimes\psi\rangle\langle\psi\otimes\psi|.Φ(∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣)=∣ψ⊗ψ⟩⟨ψ⊗ψ∣.

The channel maps ι\iotaι directly to ι×ι\iota\times\iotaι×ι. No separate blank input register or ancilla appears in the statement.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
