There is an absolute constant c>0c>0c>0 with the following property. Let XXX be a finite data universe, CCC a class of predicates φ:X→{0,1}\varphi:X\to\{0,1\}φ:X→{0,1} of VC-dimension d≥1d\ge1d≥1, n≥1n\ge1n≥1 the input size, ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, 0<δ≤10<\delta\le10<δ≤1 and 0<α≤120<\alpha\le\tfrac120<α≤21. If

α ≥ cεα2n(d log⁡∣X∣ log⁡1α+log⁡1δ),\alpha\ \ge\ \frac{c}{\varepsilon\alpha^2 n}\Big(d\,\log|X|\,\log\frac1\alpha+\log\frac1\delta\Big),α ≥ εα2nc(dlog∣X∣logα1+logδ1),

then a minimum α2\tfrac\alpha22α-net NNN for the counting queries of CCC exists, and the Net mechanism with privacy parameter ε\varepsilonε run on any such NNN is (α,δ)(\alpha,\delta)(α,δ)-useful for CCC: for every input z∈Xnz\in X^nz∈Xn, with probability at least 1−δ1-\delta1−δ its output D^\hat DD^ satisfies ∣Qφ(D^)−Qφ(z)∣≤α|Q_\varphi(\hat D)-Q_\varphi(z)|\le\alpha∣Qφ(D^)−Qφ(z)∣≤α for every φ∈C\varphi\in Cφ∈C.

This is the paper's main utility theorem: ignoring computation, any class of counting queries of polynomial VC-dimension over a discretized universe admits a differentially private (Property 3.3) synthetic-database release whose error decays with the database size nnn.

Formalization Note The paper writes α≥O(⋅)\alpha\ge O(\cdot)α≥O(⋅); the O(⋅)O(\cdot)O(⋅) is an absolute constant ccc quantified before every other binder. The paper obtains (α,δ)(\alpha,\delta)(α,δ) from Corollary 3.5's (2α′,δ)(2\alpha',\delta)(2α′,δ) at α′=α/2\alpha'=\alpha/2α′=α/2, so the mechanism runs on a minimum α/2\alpha/2α/2-net and the factor 222 is absorbed into ccc. The hypotheses d≥1d\ge1d≥1, α≤12\alpha\le\tfrac12α≤21 (so log⁡(1/α)>0\log(1/\alpha)>0log(1/α)>0) are disclosed exclusions. Privacy is Property 3.3 and is not restated. Neighbours differ in exactly one entry; logarithms are natural.

/-- Theorem 3.10 (p. 10): there is an absolute constant `c > 0` such that for every finite data
universe `X`, every class `C` of counting queries of VC-dimension `d ≥ 1`, every
input size `n ≥ 1`, every `ε > 0`, `0 < δ ≤ 1` and `0 < α ≤ 1/2` with
`α ≥ (c/(ε α² n)) (d log|X| log(1/α) + log(1/δ))`, a minimum `α/2`-net for `C` exists and the
Net mechanism run on any minimum `α/2`-net is `(α, δ)`-useful for `C` on inputs of size `n`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
