Proof of Theorem 14, p. 15 — under EFX, v_i(X_i) ≥ (1 − 1/|X_j|)·v_i(X_j) ≥ ½·v_i(X_j) whenever |X_j| ≥ 2

Let the valuations be additive and let XXX be EFX. For agents i,ji,ji,j with ∣Xj∣≥2|X_j|\ge 2∣Xj∣≥2,

vi(Xi) ≥ (1−1∣Xj∣) vi(Xj) ≥ 12 vi(Xj).v_i(X_i)\ \ge\ \Bigl(1-\frac{1}{|X_j|}\Bigr)\, v_i(X_j)\ \ge\ \frac12\, v_i(X_j).vi(Xi) ≥ (1−∣Xj∣1)vi(Xj) ≥ 21vi(Xj).

This is the step of the proof of Theorem 14 that turns the EFX property into inequality (3): an agent never values another agent's bundle of at least two goods at more than twice her own bundle.

Formalization Note The conclusion is the conjunction of the two inequalities (1−1/∣Xj∣)vi(Xj)≤vi(Xi)(1-1/|X_j|)v_i(X_j)\le v_i(X_i)(1−1/∣Xj∣)vi(Xj)≤vi(Xi) and 12vi(Xj)≤vi(Xi)\tfrac12 v_i(X_j)\le v_i(X_i)21vi(Xj)≤vi(Xi), with ∣Xj∣|X_j|∣Xj∣ cast to R\mathbb{R}R. The page states it for j∈N′j\in N'j∈N′; the statement holds for every pair i,ji,ji,j and is posed so.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
