Let 0<μ1<μ20 < \mu_1 < \mu_20<μ1<μ2, l∈Nl \in \mathbb Nl∈N, Λ>0\Lambda > 0Λ>0, 0<α<12(μ2−μ1)0 < \alpha < \tfrac12(\mu_2 - \mu_1)0<α<21(μ2−μ1) and τ>0\tau > 0τ>0 with

α2+(2l+1)2π2τ2=Λ2.\alpha^2 + \frac{(2l+1)^2\pi^2}{\tau^2} = \Lambda^2 .α2+τ2(2l+1)2π2=Λ2.

Then

  1. τ>(2l+1)πΛ\displaystyle \tau > \frac{(2l+1)\pi}{\Lambda}τ>Λ(2l+1)π;
  2. if moreover Λ2>14(μ2−μ1)2\Lambda^2 > \tfrac14(\mu_2 - \mu_1)^2Λ2>41(μ2−μ1)2, then
τ<(2l+1)πΛ2−14(μ2−μ1)2.\tau < \frac{(2l+1)\pi}{\sqrt{\Lambda^2 - \tfrac14(\mu_2-\mu_1)^2}} .τ<Λ2−41(μ2−μ1)2(2l+1)π.

Applied to the delays τn,l\tau_{n,l}τn,l of Case (b), bound 1 shows τn,l→+∞\tau_{n,l} \to +\inftyτn,l→+∞ as l→∞l \to \inftyl→∞ for a fixed eigenvalue Λn2\Lambda_n^2Λn2, and bound 2 shows τn,l→0+\tau_{n,l} \to 0^+τn,l→0+ as Λn→∞\Lambda_n \to \inftyΛn→∞ for a fixed lll: the destabilizing delays are arbitrarily large and arbitrarily small.

Formalization Note The paper derives both limits from the single inequality (2l+1)2π2/τn,l2≤Λn2(2l+1)^2\pi^2/\tau_{n,l}^2 \le \Lambda_n^2(2l+1)2π2/τn,l2≤Λn2, which bounds τn,l\tau_{n,l}τn,l only from below and so gives only the limit l→∞l \to \inftyl→∞. The upper bound 2, which uses α<12(μ2−μ1)\alpha < \tfrac12(\mu_2 - \mu_1)α<21(μ2−μ1), is the step needed for τn,l→0+\tau_{n,l} \to 0^+τn,l→0+; the statement includes it as the corrected form of the page's argument.

/-- Nicaise–Pignotti, §5.2, p. 1585 (corrected): if `0 < μ₁ < μ₂`, `α ∈ (0, (μ₂ − μ₁)/2)`,
`Λ > 0`, `τ > 0` and `α² + (2l+1)²π²/τ² = Λ²`, then `(2l+1)π/Λ < τ`, and if moreover
`(μ₂ − μ₁)²/4 < Λ²` then `τ < (2l+1)π / √(Λ² − (μ₂ − μ₁)²/4)`. -/
