Let ϕ:F×Multiset(F)→F\phi : F \times \mathrm{Multiset}(F) \to Fϕ:F×Multiset(F)→F be injective, that is, ϕ(x,S)=ϕ(x′,S′)\phi(x, S) = \phi(x', S')ϕ(x,S)=ϕ(x′,S′) implies x=x′x = x'x=x′ and S=S′S = S'S=S′. Let GGG and G′G'G′ be two graphs, s≥0s \ge 0s≥0 a round, and h:V(G)→Fh : V(G) \to Fh:V(G)→F, h′:V(G′)→Fh' : V(G') \to Fh′:V(G′)→F node features that are an injective image of the round-sss Weisfeiler–Lehman colours csc^scs across the two graphs: for all nodes uuu of GGG and vvv of G′G'G′,

hu=hv′  ⟺  cGs(u)=cG′s(v).h_u = h'_v \iff c^s_G(u) = c^s_{G'}(v).hu=hv′⟺cGs(u)=cG′s(v).

Then after one application of the local layer (13) the same holds one round later: for all uuu, vvv,

ϕ(hu,{ ⁣{hw:w∈Nu} ⁣})=ϕ(hv′,{ ⁣{hw′:w∈Nv} ⁣})  ⟺  cGs+1(u)=cG′s+1(v).\phi\big(h_u, \{\!\{h_w : w \in \mathcal N_u\}\!\}\big) = \phi\big(h'_v, \{\!\{h'_w : w \in \mathcal N_v\}\!\}\big) \iff c^{s+1}_G(u) = c^{s+1}_{G'}(v).ϕ(hu,{{hw:w∈Nu}})=ϕ(hv′,{{hw′:w∈Nv}})⟺cGs+1(u)=cG′s+1(v).

This is the precise sense in which an injective local function performs one step of the Weisfeiler–Lehman colour refinement, where cs+1(u)c^{s+1}(u)cs+1(u) is the pair of cs(u)c^s(u)cs(u) and the multiset of the colours csc^scs of the neighbours of uuu.

Formalization Note The book's sentence is informal; it is stated here as the one-step correspondence between equality of features and equality of WL colours. Colours are the history-carrying colours neighborColor of the reused definition WLIdentification, so they are comparable across graphs. Taking G′=GG' = GG′=G gives the single-graph version.

/-- §4.1, p. 34: when the local function `φ` of the layer (13) is injective (as a function of the
pair `(x_u, X_{N_u})`), one application of the layer is one step of the Weisfeiler–Lehman colour
refinement: if, across two graphs `G` and `G'`, equal round-`s` features are exactly equal
round-`s` WL colours, then equal features after the layer are exactly equal round-`(s+1)` colours. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
