ContDiff primitive of a closed ContDiff 1-form

Proved
NewtonCartan.contDiff_primitive_of_closed_oneForm

by Ethan Cheung Wang · Oct 21, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

Let XXX be a finite-dimensional real normed space and let ω:X→L(X,R)\omega : X \to \mathrm{L}(X,\mathbb{R})ω:X→L(X,R) be a C∞C^\inftyC∞ closed 111-form, meaning

Dωa(x,y)=Dωa(y,x)for all a,x,y∈X.D\omega_a(x,y)=D\omega_a(y,x)\qquad\text{for all }a,x,y\in X.Dωa(x,y)=Dωa(y,x)for all a,x,y∈X.

Then there exists a C∞C^\inftyC∞ potential φ:X→R\varphi : X \to \mathbb{R}φ:X→R such that Dφa=ωaD\varphi_a=\omega_aDφa=ωa at every point.

The result upgrades Mathlib's Poincaré lemma on the convex open set Rn≅X\mathbb{R}^n\cong XRn≅X by combining the existence of a Fréchet primitive with contDiff_infty_iff_fderiv: since the derivative equals the already smooth form ω\omegaω, the primitive is C∞C^\inftyC∞. This is the analytic engine for integrating Trautman spatial Hessians on each constant-ttt slice in Malament/Weatherall Proposition 2.2.

Formalization Note. Infrastructure lemma for NewtonCartan.exists_potential_of_spatial_F.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
