Let v1,…,vnv_1,\dots,v_nv1,…,vn be valuations on the bundles of MMM and let xxx be an optimal solution of the LP relaxation, with value OPT∗=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S)OPT^*=\sum_{i,S}x_{i,S}v_i(S)OPT∗=∑i,Sxi,Svi(S). Then for every allocation (O1,…,On)(O_1,\dots,O_n)(O1,…,On) (pairwise disjoint bundles),

∑ivi(Oi)≤OPT∗.\sum_i v_i(O_i)\le OPT^*.i∑vi(Oi)≤OPT∗.

In particular OPT∗OPT^*OPT∗ is an upper bound on the optimal welfare OPTOPTOPT.

This is the first step of the proof of Theorem 3.1: every approximation guarantee relative to OPT∗OPT^*OPT∗ transfers to OPTOPTOPT.

Formalization Note No assumption on the valuations is needed; the statement is quantified over every allocation instead of naming an optimal one.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
