Schnirelmann's inequality σ(D+E)≥σ(D)+σ(E)−σ(D)σ(E)\sigma(D+E)\ge\sigma(D)+\sigma(E)-\sigma(D)\sigma(E)σ(D+E)≥σ(D)+σ(E)−σ(D)σ(E)

Let D,E⊆Z≥0D,E\subseteq\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}D,E⊆Z≥0 with 0∈D0\in D0∈D and 0∈E0\in E0∈E, and let σ\sigmaσ be the Schnirelmann density. Then

σ(D+E)  ≥  σ(D)+σ(E)−σ(D) σ(E),\sigma(D+E) \;\ge\; \sigma(D)+\sigma(E)-\sigma(D)\,\sigma(E),σ(D+E)≥σ(D)+σ(E)−σ(D)σ(E),

where D+E={d+e:d∈D, e∈E}D+E=\{d+e: d\in D,\ e\in E\}D+E={d+e:d∈D, e∈E}.

This is Schnirelmann's classical additive inequality, equivalently 1−σ(D+E)≤(1−σ(D))(1−σ(E))1-\sigma(D+E)\le(1-\sigma(D))(1-\sigma(E))1−σ(D+E)≤(1−σ(D))(1−σ(E)). It applies to any sets containing 000 and is not specific to primes.

Formalization Note σ\sigmaσ is Mathlib's schnirelmannDensity, with classical decidability. D+ED+ED+E is the pointwise sumset.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
