Let GGG be a finite group and let (ρi,Vi)i∈Λ(\rho_i,V_i)_{i\in\Lambda}(ρi,Vi)i∈Λ be a complete family of irreducible unitary representations of GGG: Λ\LambdaΛ is a finite index set and, for each i∈Λi\in\Lambdai∈Λ, ViV_iVi is a finite-dimensional complex inner product space of dimension di≥1d_i\ge 1di≥1 on which GGG acts irreducibly by unitary operators ρi(g)\rho_i(g)ρi(g); distinct indices give non-isomorphic representations; and the characters χi(g)=tr⁡ρi(g)\chi_i(g)=\operatorname{tr}\rho_i(g)χi(g)=trρi(g) satisfy the regular-representation identity ∑i∈Λdi χi(g)=∣G∣ [g=1]\sum_{i\in\Lambda}d_i\,\chi_i(g)=|G|\,[g=1]∑i∈Λdiχi(g)=∣G∣[g=1] for all g∈Gg\in Gg∈G.

For i∈Λi\in\Lambdai∈Λ let ei ⁣:G→Ce_i\colon G\to\mathbb Cei:G→C be the character kernel ei(g)=di∣G∣ χi(g−1)e_i(g)=\frac{d_i}{|G|}\,\chi_i(g^{-1})ei(g)=∣G∣diχi(g−1), and for functions f,k ⁣:G→Cf,k\colon G\to\mathbb Cf,k:G→C let (f∗k)(x)=∑g∈Gf(g) k(g−1x)(f*k)(x)=\sum_{g\in G}f(g)\,k(g^{-1}x)(f∗k)(x)=∑g∈Gf(g)k(g−1x) be their convolution. Then for all i,j∈Λi,j\in\Lambdai,j∈Λ

ei∗ej={ei,i=j,0,i≠j.e_i*e_j=\begin{cases}e_i, & i=j,\\ 0, & i\neq j.\end{cases}ei∗ej={ei,0,i=j,i=j.

Thus the character kernels are pairwise orthogonal idempotents of the group algebra (CG,∗)(\mathbb C^G,*)(CG,∗). Since f↦σ(f)=∑gf(g) σ(g)f\mapsto\sigma(f)=\sum_g f(g)\,\sigma(g)f↦σ(f)=∑gf(g)σ(g) turns convolution into composition for every representation σ\sigmaσ of GGG, this identity is what makes the operators σ(ei)\sigma(e_i)σ(ei) mutually annihilating idempotents (the isotypic projectors), and its coordinatewise version gives the same property for the joint projectors of a product group GIG^IGI.

Formalization Note The family is a term F : OAI.Thorp.Fourier.Family G; did_idi is F.degree i, eie_iei is F.kernel i, and the convolution is OAI.Thorp.Fourier.convolution. The right-hand side is written if i = j then F.kernel i else 0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
