Let H\mathcal HH be a real Hilbert space. Minimize f=g+hf=g+hf=g+h, where g:H→Rg:\mathcal H\to\mathbb Rg:H→R is convex and continuously differentiable with LLL-Lipschitz gradient for some L>0L>0L>0 (that is, g∈FLg\in\mathcal F_Lg∈FL), and h:H→R∪{+∞}h:\mathcal H\to\mathbb R\cup\{+\infty\}h:H→R∪{+∞} is proper, lower semicontinuous and convex. Assume fff has a minimizer x⋆x^\starx⋆ and write f⋆=f(x⋆)f^\star=f(x^\star)f⋆=f(x⋆). Let r>3r>3r>3 and 0<s≤1/L0<s\le1/L0<s≤1/L, and let (xk)(x_k)(xk) be generated by the generalized Nesterov scheme

xk=yk−1−sGs(yk−1),yk=xk+k−1k+r−1(xk−xk−1),y0=x0,x_k=y_{k-1}-sG_s(y_{k-1}),\qquad y_k=x_k+\frac{k-1}{k+r-1}(x_k-x_{k-1}),\qquad y_0=x_0,xk=yk−1−sGs(yk−1),yk=xk+k+r−1k−1(xk−xk−1),y0=x0,

where Gs(y)=(y−prox⁡sh(y−s∇g(y)))/sG_s(y)=\big(y-\operatorname{prox}_{sh}(y-s\nabla g(y))\big)/sGs(y)=(y−proxsh(y−s∇g(y)))/s is the proximal subgradient. Then for every k≥1k\ge1k≥1,

f(xk)−f⋆≤(r−1)2∥x0−x⋆∥22s(k+r−2)2,f(x_k)-f^\star\le\frac{(r-1)^2\|x_0-x^\star\|^2}{2s(k+r-2)^2},f(xk)−f⋆≤2s(k+r−2)2(r−1)2∥x0−x⋆∥2,

and

∑k=1∞(k+r−1)(f(xk)−f⋆)≤(r−1)2∥x0−x⋆∥22s(r−3).\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}(k+r-1)\big(f(x_k)-f^\star\big)\le\frac{(r-1)^2\|x_0-x^\star\|^2}{2s(r-3)} .k=1∑∞(k+r−1)(f(xk)−f⋆)≤2s(r−3)(r−1)2∥x0−x⋆∥2.

The first bound shows that replacing the constant 333 in Nesterov's momentum coefficient (k−1)/(k+2)(k-1)/(k+2)(k−1)/(k+2) by any r>3r>3r>3 keeps the O(1/k2)O(1/k^2)O(1/k2) rate; the second, which does not follow from the first, shows the gap is summable against weights of order kkk, so it cannot stay of order 1/k21/k^21/k2 along a set of indices of positive density.

Formalization Note. The proximal map prox⁡sh\operatorname{prox}_{sh}proxsh is any PPP with IsProx s h P; hhh is assumed lower semicontinuous (closed) in addition to the paper's "convex, possibly assuming the value ∞\infty∞", because that is what makes the argmin⁡\operatorname{argmin}argmin in GsG_sGs exist. r>3r>3r>3 is the standing assumption of §4.1, which the theorem does not restate. s≤1/Ls\le1/Ls≤1/L is written sL≤1sL\le1sL≤1. The run includes the first step x1=P(x0−s∇g(x0))x_1=P(x_0-s\nabla g(x_0))x1=P(x0−s∇g(x0)). Values of fff lie in EReal. The first bound is claimed for k≥1k\ge1k≥1 (x0x_0x0 may lie outside the domain of hhh). The infinite series of nonnegative terms is stated through all its partial sums ∑k=1K\sum_{k=1}^K∑k=1K, which is equivalent and avoids the junk value of an unconditional tsum.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
