Let n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 and let Φ=(φ0,…,φn−1)\Phi = (\varphi_0, \dots, \varphi_{n-1})Φ=(φ0,…,φn−1) be the n×nn \times nn×n Fourier matrix with columns φk(u)=n−1/2e2πiku/n\varphi_k(u) = n^{-1/2} e^{2\pi i k u/n}φk(u)=n−1/2e2πiku/n. Writing Φ∗\Phi^*Φ∗ for the conjugate transpose,

Φ∗Φ=I.\Phi^* \Phi = I .Φ∗Φ=I.

So the columns of Φ\PhiΦ are orthonormal for the Hermitian inner product and multiplication by Φ∗\Phi^*Φ∗ (the DFT) is a change of coordinates whose inverse is multiplication by Φ\PhiΦ (the inverse DFT).

Formalization Note The side-note calls Φ\PhiΦ "an orthogonal matrix"; since Φ\PhiΦ is complex, the property it writes, Φ∗Φ=I\Phi^*\Phi = IΦ∗Φ=I with Φ∗\Phi^*Φ∗ the conjugate transpose (the book's own convention, side-note p. 38), is unitarity. The Lean statement uses conjTranspose.

/-- Bronstein et al. §4.2, side-note p. 38: the Fourier matrix satisfies `Φ*Φ = I`, where `Φ*` is
the conjugate transpose (the side-note calls `Φ` orthogonal; over `ℂ` this is unitarity). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
