A tree witness is a function θ:N×Z→{0,1}\theta:\mathbb N\times\mathbb Z\to\{0,1\}θ:N×Z→{0,1} on the nodes (k,r)(k,r)(k,r) of the binary tree of residues. For distinct integers x,yx,yx,y with k=ν2(y−x)k=\nu_2(y-x)k=ν2(y−x), put x≺θyx\prec_\theta yx≺θy iff bitk(x)=1⇔θ(k, x mod 2k)=1\mathrm{bit}_k(x)=1 \Leftrightarrow \theta(k,\,x\bmod 2^k)=1bitk(x)=1⇔θ(k,xmod2k)=1 (bitk\mathrm{bit}_kbitk is the kkk-th two's-complement binary digit). A finite word QQQ of integers is θ\thetaθ-safe if the completion "the letters of QQQ in order, then all remaining integers in ≺θ\prec_\theta≺θ-order" contains no monotone 444-term arithmetic progression (positions of a,a+r,a+2r,a+3ra,a+r,a+2r,a+3ra,a+r,a+2r,a+3r increasing, r≠0r\neq0r=0). Positions in QQQ are first occurrences. For a word QQQ let Q0Q_0Q0 be the subsequence of even letters mapped by x↦x/2x\mapsto x/2x↦x/2, and Q1Q_1Q1 the subsequence of odd letters mapped by x↦(x−1)/2x\mapsto (x-1)/2x↦(x−1)/2. Let θc(k,r)=θ(k+1, 2r+c)\theta_c(k,r)=\theta(k+1,\,2r+c)θc(k,r)=θ(k+1,2r+c) for c∈{0,1}c\in\{0,1\}c∈{0,1}. Then

Q is θ-safe  ⟺  Q0 is θ0-safe, Q1 is θ1-safe, and (R) holds,Q \text{ is } \theta\text{-safe} \iff Q_0 \text{ is } \theta_0\text{-safe},\ Q_1 \text{ is } \theta_1\text{-safe, and (R) holds},Q is θ-safe⟺Q0 is θ0-safe, Q1 is θ1-safe, and (R) holds,

where the root condition (R) says: for every pair a,b∈Qa,b\in Qa,b∈Q with b−ab-ab−a odd and aaa before bbb, (i) if 2b−a∈Q2b-a\in Q2b−a∈Q occurs after bbb then 3b−2a∈Q3b-2a\in Q3b−2a∈Q occurs before 2b−a2b-a2b−a; (ii) if neither 2b−a2b-a2b−a nor 3b−2a3b-2a3b−2a lies in QQQ then bbb is odd exactly when θ(0,0)=1\theta(0,0)=1θ(0,0)=1.

This is the exact self-similarity of tree safety: all non-root constraints split into two independent problems of the same kind one binary digit lower (for the two subtrees of θ\thetaθ), and the halves interact only through the odd-difference root condition (R). It generalizes the parity decomposition for ε\varepsilonε-orders (the case θ(k,r)=εk\theta(k,r)=\varepsilon_kθ(k,r)=εk).

Formalization note: treeLt, Safe, bitOne from Definitions.Def_Erdos195_tree/Def_Erdos195_defs; positions are List.idxOf; x / 2 is floor division, so it equals (x−1)/2(x-1)/2(x−1)/2 on odd xxx.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
