Let EEE be a complex Hilbert space with a Hilbert basis (bj)j∈J(b_j)_{j\in J}(bj)j∈J, and let p:J→(0,∞)p:J\to(0,\infty)p:J→(0,∞) be summable. Let L(x,y)L(x,y)L(x,y) denote the logarithmic mean (L(x,y)=y−xlog⁡y−log⁡xL(x,y)=\frac{y-x}{\log y-\log x}L(x,y)=logy−logxy−x for x≠yx\neq yx=y, L(x,x)=xL(x,x)=xL(x,x)=x). For a bounded operator ZZZ on EEE let v(Z)∈ℓ2(J×J)\mathrm v(Z)\in\ell^2(J\times J)v(Z)∈ℓ2(J×J) be its logarithmic-mean coordinate vector

v(Z)ij=L(pi,pj)  ⟨bi,Zbj⟩(i,j∈J),\mathrm v(Z)_{ij}=\sqrt{L(p_i,p_j)}\;\langle b_i,Zb_j\rangle\qquad(i,j\in J),v(Z)ij=L(pi,pj)⟨bi,Zbj⟩(i,j∈J),

which is square summable. Then

⟨v(Id), v(Z)⟩ℓ2(J×J)=∑j∈Jpj ⟨bj,Zbj⟩.\bigl\langle\mathrm v(\mathrm{Id}),\,\mathrm v(Z)\bigr\rangle_{\ell^2(J\times J)}=\sum_{j\in J}p_j\,\langle b_j,Zb_j\rangle .⟨v(Id),v(Z)⟩ℓ2(J×J)=j∈J∑pj⟨bj,Zbj⟩.

Thus ∥v(Z)∥2=∑i,jL(pi,pj)∣⟨bi,Zbj⟩∣2\|\mathrm v(Z)\|^2=\sum_{i,j}L(p_i,p_j)|\langle b_i,Zb_j\rangle|^2∥v(Z)∥2=∑i,jL(pi,pj)∣⟨bi,Zbj⟩∣2 is the Bogoliubov–Kubo–Mori quadratic form of ZZZ relative to ρ=∑jpj∣bj⟩⟨bj∣\rho=\sum_jp_j|b_j\rangle\langle b_j|ρ=∑jpj∣bj⟩⟨bj∣, and the identity says that the component of v(Z)\mathrm v(Z)v(Z) along v(Id)\mathrm v(\mathrm{Id})v(Id) is the mean Tr⁡ρZ\operatorname{Tr}\rho ZTrρZ. This is the basic step for decomposing the BKM form into a variance plus the squared mean.

Formalization Note The right side is the tsum BKM.mean b p Z; the inner product on ℓ2\ell^2ℓ2 is conjugate-linear in the first argument.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
