Let q∈Δnq\in\Delta_nq∈Δn with q(j)>0q(j)>0q(j)>0 for all jjj, let β>0\beta>0β>0 and v∈Rnv\in\mathbb R^nv∈Rn, and let σ\sigmaσ be the dual function (47). Write vmax⁡=max⁡jv(j)v_{\max}=\max_j v(j)vmax=maxjv(j) and Q(v)=∑j: v(j)=vmax⁡q(j)Q(v)=\sum_{j:\,v(j)=v_{\max}}q(j)Q(v)=∑j:v(j)=vmaxq(j). Then, as λ→0+\lambda\to 0^+λ→0+,

σ(λ)=vmax⁡+(β+log⁡Q(v))λ+o(λ).\sigma(\lambda)=v_{\max}+(\beta+\log Q(v))\lambda+o(\lambda).σ(λ)=vmax+(β+logQ(v))λ+o(λ).

In particular σ(λ)→vmax⁡\sigma(\lambda)\to v_{\max}σ(λ)→vmax, which is the paper's σ(0)=vmax⁡\sigma(0)=v_{\max}σ(0)=vmax, and the right derivative of σ\sigmaσ at 000 is σ′(0)=β+log⁡Q(v)\sigma'(0)=\beta+\log Q(v)σ′(0)=β+logQ(v).

The expansion at 000 decides whether the minimum of σ\sigmaσ is attained at an interior λ\lambdaλ or only in the limit λ→0+\lambda\to0^+λ→0+.

Formalization Note The statement has two parts: Tendsto of σ\sigmaσ to vmax⁡v_{\max}vmax along 𝓝[>] 0, and the remainder σ(λ)−vmax⁡−(β+log⁡Q(v))λ\sigma(\lambda)-v_{\max}-(\beta+\log Q(v))\lambdaσ(λ)−vmax−(β+logQ(v))λ is little-o of λ\lambdaλ along 𝓝[>] 0. Appendix C in fact shows the remainder is O(λe−t/λ)O(\lambda e^{-t/\lambda})O(λe−t/λ) for some t>0t>0t>0; the statement here is the printed o(λ)o(\lambda)o(λ).

/-- Eq. (49) (Nilim–El Ghaoui 2005, §6.3, p. 791; proof in Appendix C, p. 797). For `q ∈ Δₙ` with
`q > 0` and `β > 0`, as `λ → 0⁺`,
`σ(λ) = v_max + (β + log Q(v)) λ + o(λ)`, where `Q(v) = ∑_{j : v(j) = v_max} q(j)`. In particular
`σ(λ) → v_max` (the paper's `σ(0) = v_max`). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting. Let n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, let q,v∈Rnq, v \in \mathbb{R}^nq,v∈Rn and let β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}β∈R. Assume:

  • qqq lies in the probability simplex (qj≥0q_j \ge 0qj≥0, ∑jqj=1\sum_j q_j = 1∑jqj=1);
  • qj>0q_j > 0qj>0 for every jjj;
  • β>0\beta > 0β>0.

Notation.

  • The dual function is σ(λ)=λlog⁡(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = \lambda \log\big(\sum_j q_j e^{v_j/\lambda}\big) + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=λlog(∑jqjevj/λ)+βλ.
  • vmax⁡=max⁡jvjv_{\max} = \max_j v_jvmax=maxjvj, the supremum of the coordinates of vvv.
  • The mass at the maximum is
Q(v)=∑j:vj=vmax⁡qj.Q(v) = \sum_{j : v_j = v_{\max}} q_j .Q(v)=j:vj=vmax∑qj.

Under the hypotheses, 0<Q(v)≤10 < Q(v) \le 10<Q(v)≤1, so log⁡Q(v)≤0\log Q(v) \le 0logQ(v)≤0 is an ordinary logarithm.

Conclusion (limit). As λ→0\lambda \to 0λ→0 from the right, meaning through values λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0,

σ(λ)→vmax⁡.\sigma(\lambda) \to v_{\max}.σ(λ)→vmax.

Conclusion (first-order behaviour). As λ→0+\lambda \to 0^{+}λ→0+,

σ(λ)−vmax⁡−(β+log⁡Q(v))λ  =  o(λ).\sigma(\lambda) - v_{\max} - \big(\beta + \log Q(v)\big)\lambda \;=\; o(\lambda).σ(λ)−vmax−(β+logQ(v))λ=o(λ).

That is, for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a δ>0\delta > 0δ>0 such that the absolute value of the left side is at most ελ\varepsilon\lambdaελ whenever 0<λ<δ0 < \lambda < \delta0<λ<δ.

The statement is only about λ>0\lambda > 0λ>0 near 000. It says nothing about the value at λ=0\lambda = 0λ=0 itself, which by the division convention would be 000.

Degenerate cases.

  • n=0n = 0n=0: excluded by the simplex hypothesis.
  • n=1n = 1n=1, or vvv constant:
    • Q(v)=1Q(v) = 1Q(v)=1 and log⁡Q(v)=0\log Q(v) = 0logQ(v)=0.
    • σ(λ)=vmax⁡+βλ\sigma(\lambda) = v_{\max} + \beta\lambdaσ(λ)=vmax+βλ exactly, so both claims hold trivially.
  • Unique maximising coordinate j0j_0j0: Q(v)=qj0Q(v) = q_{j_0}Q(v)=qj0.
