This is the attainment half of the linear program in the proof of Theorem 13 of Karlin, Manasse, McGeoch and Owicki (two servers on the triangle with d(ab)=3d(ab)=3d(ab)=3, d(ac)=5d(ac)=5d(ac)=5, d(bc)=4d(bc)=4d(bc)=4).

Take the probabilities determined by the minimization,

π1=21613207, π2=1691069, π3=14813207, π4=27493207, π5=10163207, π6=3711069, π7=24913207, π8=2121069, π9=19613207,\pi_1=\tfrac{2161}{3207},\ \pi_2=\tfrac{169}{1069},\ \pi_3=\tfrac{1481}{3207},\ \pi_4=\tfrac{2749}{3207},\ \pi_5=\tfrac{1016}{3207},\ \pi_6=\tfrac{371}{1069},\ \pi_7=\tfrac{2491}{3207},\ \pi_8=\tfrac{212}{1069},\ \pi_9=\tfrac{1961}{3207},π1=32072161, π2=1069169, π3=32071481, π4=32072749, π5=32071016, π6=1069371, π7=32072491, π8=1069212, π9=32071961,

and α=1652/1069\alpha = 1652/1069α=1652/1069. In the paper, πi\pi_iπi is the probability that the algorithm occupies a given configuration after a given prefix of a phase (second table of p. 567): starting from {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b}, after ccc the algorithm is in {a,c}\{a,c\}{a,c} with probability π1\pi_1π1 and in {b,c}\{b,c\}{b,c} with probability 1−π11-\pi_11−π1; after cbcbcb in {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b} with probability π2\pi_2π2; after cbacbacba in {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b} with probability π3\pi_3π3 (otherwise {a,c}\{a,c\}{a,c}); after cbabcbabcbab in {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b} with probability π4\pi_4π4; after cbabccbabccbabc in {a,c}\{a,c\}{a,c} with probability π5\pi_5π5; starting from {a,c}\{a,c\}{a,c}, after bbb in {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b} with probability π6\pi_6π6 and after bababa with probability π7\pi_7π7; starting from {b,c}\{b,c\}{b,c}, after aaa in {a,b}\{a,b\}{a,b} with probability π8\pi_8π8 and after ababab with probability π9\pi_9π9.

The claim is:

  1. each πi\pi_iπi lies in [0,1][0,1][0,1], so these are genuine probabilities;
  2. there exist real potentials Φab,Φac,Φbc\Phi_{ab},\Phi_{ac},\Phi_{bc}Φab,Φac,Φbc such that all twelve phase constraints
A’s expected cost≤α⋅(opt’s cost)+Φs−Φs′\text{A's expected cost} \le \alpha\cdot(\text{opt's cost}) + \Phi_s - \Phi_{s'}A’s expected cost≤α⋅(opt’s cost)+Φs−Φs′

of the table on p. 568 hold at these values (the constraints are listed one by one in the companion milestone on the LP lower bound).

Together with Theorem 2 of the paper (an LP bound of α\alphaα for a lazy phase-based algorithm makes it α\alphaα-competitive), this is the source of the upper bound in Theorem 13.

Formalization Note The paper names no potentials, so they are existentially quantified. The printed probability values are fixed by let bindings.
