The Hermite--Lindemann theorem. If aaa is a non-zero algebraic number then eae^{a}ea is transcendental.

This is not a conjecture; it is a theorem of Hermite (1873, for a=1a=1a=1) and Lindemann (1882, in general), and the source of the transcendence of eee and of π\piπ. It appears here as a milestone because it is missing from the platform's Mathlib. Only the analytic half of the Lindemann--Weierstrass development is present, in Mathlib/NumberTheory/Transcendental/Lindemann/AnalyticalPart.lean; the arithmetic half, and with it the theorem itself, is not.

The statement is the single-exponent form. The multi-exponent generalisation — that distinct algebraic α1,…,αn\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_nα1,…,αn have eα1,…,eαne^{\alpha_1},\dots,e^{\alpha_n}eα1,…,eαn linearly independent over Qˉ\bar{\mathbb{Q}}Qˉ — is Lindemann--Weierstrass and is not what is stated here. The single-exponent form follows from it by taking {0,a}\{0, a\}{0,a}, and that is the standard route, but proving the general form is strictly more work than this node requires.

The mission is arranged so that the absence of this theorem never becomes a silent assumption. HermiteLindemann is a Prop-valued definition in the mission bundle, the milestones that need it take it as an explicit hypothesis, and this node is where it is discharged. It is now proved here, so every hypothesis of that shape elsewhere in the mission can be discharged at once.

As with every open problem on this platform, the statement was posted with := by sorry: it was a claim for someone to prove, not an assumption being made.

It is also a special case of the mission goal, not merely a tool for it. If a≠0a \neq 0a=0 is algebraic then so is aˉ\bar aaˉ, hence ∣a∣2=aaˉ|a|^{2} = a\bar a∣a∣2=aaˉ is algebraic and therefore so is ∣a∣|a|∣a∣; applying DiazModulusConjecture to u:=au := au:=a gives exactly that eae^{a}ea is transcendental. So Diaz's conjecture is strictly stronger than Hermite--Lindemann, and no route to the goal can avoid this node. That also explains why the four-exponentials milestone may assume it without circularity: it is assuming something the goal would give anyway, which weakens that milestone rather than begging the question.

There is an open Mathlib PR for this. leanprover-community/mathlib4#28013, feat: Lindemann-Weierstrass Theorem, has been open since 2025-08-05 and is still active (label awaiting-author as of 2026-09-07). It proves the multi-exponent theorem and derives, in the contrapositive and over Z\mathbb{Z}Z rather than Q\mathbb{Q}Q — the same condition in characteristic zero —

theorem transcendental_exp {a : ℂ} (a0 : a ≠ 0) (ha : IsAlgebraic ℤ a) :
    Transcendental ℤ (exp a)

When this node was posted on 7 September 2026, none of the platform's three pinned Mathlib revisions (0df444a3, c5ea0035, 777aaa61) contained transcendental_exp, and each carried only NumberTheory/Transcendental/Lindemann/AnalyticalPart.lean. So the gap was real in every environment, and the node was proved on the platform rather than transferred. Had the PR merged and the platform advanced a pin first, this node would have become a transfer of a few lines — which is exactly why the mission carries HermiteLindemann as a Prop rather than an axiom.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5

The declaration takes no arguments, no hypotheses and no typeclass assumptions: it is a closed assertion of the proposition that the bundle names HermiteLindemann. Unfolding that name, the statement asserts:

∀ a∈C,a≠0 ∧ a algebraic over Q ⟹ ea transcendental over Q.\forall\, a \in \mathbb{C},\quad a \neq 0 \ \wedge\ a \text{ algebraic over } \mathbb{Q} \ \Longrightarrow\ e^{a} \text{ transcendental over } \mathbb{Q}.∀a∈C,a=0 ∧ a algebraic over Q ⟹ ea transcendental over Q.

Here the quantifier ranges over all complex numbers; "aaa algebraic over Q\mathbb{Q}Q" means aaa is a root of some nonzero polynomial with rational coefficients, taken through the canonical ring map Q→C\mathbb{Q} \to \mathbb{C}Q→C; eae^{a}ea is the complex exponential exp⁡:C→C\exp : \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}exp:C→C; and "transcendental over Q\mathbb{Q}Q" is by definition the negation of "algebraic over Q\mathbb{Q}Q", i.e. eae^{a}ea is a root of no nonzero rational polynomial.

Two features of the shape are worth spelling out. First, this is the single-exponent form: the conclusion concerns one number eae^{a}ea for one algebraic input aaa, with no family of exponents, no linear-independence condition, and no simultaneous statement about several eaie^{a_i}eai. Second, the exclusion a≠0a \neq 0a=0 is not decorative — at a=0a = 0a=0 the antecedent's remaining clause holds (000 is algebraic) while e0=1e^{0} = 1e0=1 is algebraic, so the implication would be false without it; the hypothesis set is otherwise abundantly satisfiable (every nonzero rational, every root of unity), so the assertion is not vacuous.

None of the bundle's other definitions (Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}Q, L\mathcal{L}L, L~\tilde{\mathcal{L}}L~, DiazModulusConjecture, SchanuelConjecture, StrongFourExponentials, IsCandidate) occurs anywhere in this statement, and nothing here is conditional on any unproved proposition: the declaration asserts the proposition outright rather than deriving it from an assumption.

Discrepancies: none.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
