galois-actionleopoldtnumber-theory

Let KKK be a number field, ppp a rational prime, and P={v⊂OK:v∣p}\mathcal P=\{v\subset\mathcal O_K : v\mid p\}P={v⊂OK:v∣p} the (finite) set of primes of OK\mathcal O_KOK above ppp. For v∈Pv\in\mathcal Pv∈P write KvK_vKv for the vvv-adic completion, Ov\mathcal O_vOv for its valuation ring, and let

U=∏v∈POv×U=\prod_{v\in\mathcal P}\mathcal O_v^\timesU=v∈P∏Ov×

be the group of semilocal units at ppp (the object SemilocalUnits p K of Def_LeopoldtDefect).

Every field automorphism σ∈Aut⁡(K/Q)\sigma\in\operatorname{Aut}(K/\mathbb Q)σ∈Aut(K/Q) restricts to a ring automorphism of OK\mathcal O_KOK and therefore permutes the primes above ppp: we write σv\sigma vσv for the prime with x∈σv  ⟺  σ−1x∈vx\in\sigma v\iff\sigma^{-1}x\in vx∈σv⟺σ−1x∈v. This file defines:

  1. The prime permutation πσ:P→P\pi_\sigma:\mathcal P\to\mathcal Pπσ:P→P, v↦σvv\mapsto\sigma vv↦σv (Leopoldt.primesOverPerm p K σ).
  2. The local isomorphisms. Since ∣σx∣σv=∣x∣v|\sigma x|_{\sigma v}=|x|_v∣σx∣σv=∣x∣v for all x∈Kx\in Kx∈K, the map σ:K→K\sigma:K\to Kσ:K→K is an isometry from (K,∣⋅∣v)(K,|\cdot|_v)(K,∣⋅∣v) to (K,∣⋅∣σv)(K,|\cdot|_{\sigma v})(K,∣⋅∣σv) and extends uniquely to a continuous isomorphism of complete fields σv:Kv→ ∼ Kσv\sigma_v:K_v\xrightarrow{\ \sim\ }K_{\sigma v}σv:Kv ∼ Kσv, which carries Ov\mathcal O_vOv onto Oσv\mathcal O_{\sigma v}Oσv and hence Ov×\mathcal O_v^\timesOv× onto Oσv×\mathcal O_{\sigma v}^\timesOσv× (Leopoldt.GaloisAction.localRingEquiv, localIntegersEquiv, localUnitsEquiv).
  3. The Galois action on semilocal units (Leopoldt.semilocalGaloisAut p K σ): the group automorphism of UUU given by
(σ⋅x)w=σσ−1w(xσ−1w)(x=(xv)v∈P∈U, w∈P).(\sigma\cdot x)_w=\sigma_{\sigma^{-1}w}\big(x_{\sigma^{-1}w}\big)\qquad(x=(x_v)_{v\in\mathcal P}\in U,\ w\in\mathcal P).(σ⋅x)w=σσ−1w(xσ−1w)(x=(xv)v∈P∈U, w∈P).

Equivalently, identifying ∏v∣pKv\prod_{v\mid p}K_v∏v∣pKv with K⊗QQpK\otimes_{\mathbb Q}\mathbb Q_pK⊗QQp, this is the action of σ⊗1\sigma\otimes 1σ⊗1 restricted to the unit group UUU. It is the action of Gal⁡(K/Q)\operatorname{Gal}(K/\mathbb Q)Gal(K/Q) on KpK_pKp, UUU and the closure E‾\overline EE of the global units which is used throughout the representation-theoretic analysis of the Leopoldt defect.

Formalization Note The local maps are parametrised by any pair of primes (v,w)(v,w)(v,w) together with a proof that w(σx)=v(x)w(\sigma x)=v(x)w(σx)=v(x) for all x∈Kx\in Kx∈K; the prime σ−1w\sigma^{-1}wσ−1w is realised as the comap of www under σ∣OK\sigma|_{\mathcal O_K}σ∣OK, and the identity w(σx)=(σ−1w)(x)w(\sigma x)=(\sigma^{-1}w)(x)w(σx)=(σ−1w)(x) of adic valuations is proved in the file. Continuity, compatibility with the diagonal embedding of global units, the group-action property and stability of E‾\overline EE are stated as separate theorems.

# The Galois action on the semilocal units at `p`

Let `K` be a number field and `σ : K ≃ₐ[ℚ] K` a field automorphism. Then `σ` permutes the
primes of `𝓞 K` above `p` (`v ↦ σ v`, where `x ∈ σ v ↔ σ⁻¹ x ∈ v`), and for every prime `v`
it is an isometry `(K, |·|_v) → (K, |·|_{σ v})`, hence extends to an isomorphism of complete
valued fields `K_v ≃ K_{σ v}` carrying `𝓞_v` onto `𝓞_{σ v}`. Collecting these gives an
automorphism of the semilocal unit group `U = ∏_{v ∣ p} 𝓞_v^×`:

  `(σ • x)_w = σ (x_{σ⁻¹ w})`.

This is the action used in Section 1.1 of Mihăilescu, *On CM `ℤ_p`-extensions and the Leopoldt
conjecture for CM fields* (arXiv:1105.4544), where `Gal(K/ℚ)` acts on `K_p = K ⊗_ℚ ℚ_p` and hence
on `U` and `Ē`; see also Neukirch, *Algebraic Number Theory*, Ch. II §8 (extensions of
valuations and the action of automorphisms on completions).
