Let KKK be a number field, ppp a rational prime, P\mathcal PP the set of primes of OK\mathcal O_KOK above ppp, and U=∏v∈POv×U=\prod_{v\in\mathcal P}\mathcal O_v^\timesU=∏v∈POv× the group of semilocal units at ppp with its product (profinite) topology. For σ∈Aut⁡(K/Q)\sigma\in\operatorname{Aut}(K/\mathbb Q)σ∈Aut(K/Q) let σU:U→U\sigma_U:U\to UσU:U→U be the Galois action on semilocal units, (σUx)w=σ(xσ−1w)(\sigma_U x)_w=\sigma(x_{\sigma^{-1}w})(σUx)w=σ(xσ−1w), where σ:Kσ−1w→∼Kw\sigma:K_{\sigma^{-1}w}\xrightarrow{\sim}K_wσ:Kσ−1w∼Kw is the continuous extension of σ\sigmaσ to completions (definition Def_LeopoldtGaloisAction).

Let E‾=⋂n≥1ι(OK×) Upn⊆U\overline E=\bigcap_{n\ge 1}\iota(\mathcal O_K^\times)\,U^{p^{n}}\subseteq UE=⋂n≥1ι(OK×)Upn⊆U be the ppp-adic closure of the global units. Then for every σ∈Aut⁡(K/Q)\sigma\in\operatorname{Aut}(K/\mathbb Q)σ∈Aut(K/Q),

x∈E‾ ⟹ σU(x)∈E‾.x\in\overline E\ \Longrightarrow\ \sigma_U(x)\in\overline E .x∈E ⟹ σU(x)∈E.

Thus E‾\overline EE is an Aut⁡(K/Q)\operatorname{Aut}(K/\mathbb Q)Aut(K/Q)-submodule of UUU, so the Galois group acts on E‾\overline EE and on its Zp\mathbb Z_pZp-rank computations, as used in the representation-theoretic treatment of the Leopoldt defect.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
