Let K/QK/\mathbb QK/Q be a finite Galois extension. If every Galois automorphism has square equal to the identity, then any two automorphisms commute:

στ=τσ(σ,τ∈Gal⁡(K/Q)).\sigma\tau=\tau\sigma\qquad(\sigma,\tau\in\operatorname{Gal}(K/\mathbb Q)).στ=τσ(σ,τ∈Gal(K/Q)).

This elementary group fact supplies the abelian branch of the exponent-two case split for a totally real Galois field. It applies to the Galois group without requiring an explicit classification of multiquadratic extensions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
