Now we need to prove divisibility by 5. Looking at quadratic residues mod 5, we see that the square of each prime is congruent to either 1 or 4 mod 5. If they are different, then their sum (p2+q2) (p^2+q^2)(p2+q2) is divisible by 5 and we are done. If they are both the same, then their difference (p2−q2) (p^2 - q^2)(p2−q2) is divisible by 5. Either way we now have: 5∣(p2+q2)(p2−q2)=p4−q4 5 \mid (p^2 + q^2)(p^2 - q^2) = p^4 - q^45∣(p2+q2)(p2−q2)=p4−q4 .

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
