Let AAA be a self-adjoint operator on a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH with projection-valued measure PAP_APA and form domain Q(A)\mathfrak Q(A)Q(A), and let ψ1,…,ψk∈Q(A)\psi_1, \dots, \psi_k \in \mathfrak Q(A)ψ1,…,ψk∈Q(A) be linearly independent. Let λ∈R\lambda \in \mathbb Rλ∈R. If

⟨ψ,Aψ⟩<λ∥ψ∥2\langle \psi, A\psi \rangle < \lambda \|\psi\|^2⟨ψ,Aψ⟩<λ∥ψ∥2

for every nonzero linear combination ψ=∑j=1kcjψj\psi = \sum_{j=1}^k c_j \psi_jψ=∑j=1kcjψj, then

dim⁡Ran⁡PA((−∞,λ))≥k.\dim \operatorname{Ran} P_A((-\infty, \lambda)) \ge k .dimRanPA((−∞,λ))≥k.

Similarly, if ⟨ψ,Aψ⟩>λ∥ψ∥2\langle \psi, A\psi \rangle > \lambda\|\psi\|^2⟨ψ,Aψ⟩>λ∥ψ∥2 for every such ψ\psiψ, then dim⁡Ran⁡PA((λ,∞))≥k\dim \operatorname{Ran} P_A((\lambda, \infty)) \ge kdimRanPA((λ,∞))≥k.

A kkk-dimensional space of trial functions on which the expectation of AAA stays below λ\lambdaλ thus certifies at least kkk dimensions of spectral subspace below λ\lambdaλ.

Formalization Note. The spectral theorem is not formalized here: the projection-valued measure PPP is taken as data with the hypothesis that A=∫λ dP(λ)A = \int \lambda\, dP(\lambda)A=∫λdP(λ) (IsSpectralIntegral P (fun x => x) A), so PA=PP_A = PPA=P. For ψ∈Q(A)\psi \in \mathfrak Q(A)ψ∈Q(A), ⟨ψ,Aψ⟩\langle\psi, A\psi\rangle⟨ψ,Aψ⟩ is the quadratic form qA(ψ)=∫η dμψ(η)q_A(\psi) = \int \eta \, d\mu_\psi(\eta)qA(ψ)=∫ηdμψ(η) (quadForm P ψ). Dimensions are cardinals (Module.rank), so an infinite-dimensional range satisfies the bound. The Hilbert space is not assumed separable.

/-- Teschl, Theorem 4.12 (i), p. 119, (4.33)–(4.34): let `A` be self-adjoint with
projection-valued measure `P` (i.e. `A = ∫ λ dP(λ)`, so `P_A = P`), let `ψ₁, …, ψ_k` be linearly
independent elements of the form domain `𝔔(A)` and `λ ∈ ℝ`. If `⟨ψ, Aψ⟩ < λ‖ψ‖²` (the quadratic
form `q_A(ψ) = ∫ η dμ_ψ(η)`) for every nonzero linear combination `ψ` of the `ψ_j`, then
`dim Ran P_A((−∞, λ)) ≥ k`; similarly `⟨ψ, Aψ⟩ > λ‖ψ‖²` implies `dim Ran P_A((λ, ∞)) ≥ k`.
Dimensions are cardinals (`Module.rank`). -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

This theorem is stated for a complex Hilbert space H\mathcal HH. It has the following hypotheses:

  • AAA is a self-adjoint linear operator (Mathlib's sense) with domain D(A)\mathcal D(A)D(A).
  • PPP assigns a bounded operator P(Ω)P(\Omega)P(Ω) on H\mathcal HH to each set Ω⊆R\Omega\subseteq\mathbb RΩ⊆R.
  • PPP satisfies the imported predicate IsProjValuedMeasure.
  • PPP, the function λ↦λ\lambda\mapsto\lambdaλ↦λ (as a complex number) and AAA together satisfy the imported predicate IsSpectralIntegral.
  • k∈Nk\in\mathbb Nk∈N, and ψ1,…,ψk∈H\psi_1,\dots,\psi_k\in\mathcal Hψ1,…,ψk∈H are linearly independent over C\mathbb CC.
  • Each ψj\psi_jψj belongs to Q(P)\mathfrak Q(P)Q(P), the imported formDomain P.
  • λ∈R\lambda\in\mathbb Rλ∈R is arbitrary.

q(φ)q(\varphi)q(φ) denotes the imported real-valued quadForm P φ. None of the imported definitions is unfolded here, because their bodies are not part of this declaration's text. Let W=span⁡C{ψ1,…,ψk}W=\operatorname{span}_{\mathbb C}\{\psi_1,\dots,\psi_k\}W=spanC{ψ1,…,ψk}. The conclusion is the conjunction of two implications:

  1. If q(φ)<λ∥φ∥2q(\varphi)<\lambda\|\varphi\|^2q(φ)<λ∥φ∥2 for every nonzero φ∈W\varphi\in Wφ∈W, then
k≤dim⁡CRan⁡P((−∞,λ)).k\le\dim_{\mathbb C}\operatorname{Ran}P\bigl((-\infty,\lambda)\bigr).k≤dimCRanP((−∞,λ)).
  1. If λ∥φ∥2<q(φ)\lambda\|\varphi\|^2<q(\varphi)λ∥φ∥2<q(φ) for every nonzero φ∈W\varphi\in Wφ∈W, then
k≤dim⁡CRan⁡P((λ,∞)).k\le\dim_{\mathbb C}\operatorname{Ran}P\bigl((\lambda,\infty)\bigr).k≤dimCRanP((λ,∞)).

Dimensions are cardinal (Hamel) dimensions of the ranges of the operators, with no closure taken. Both conditions use qqq built from PPP; AAA does not appear in them. The conditions are imposed on all of WWW, which may contain vectors not in Q(P)\mathfrak Q(P)Q(P), since only the ψj\psi_jψj themselves are assumed to lie there.

Degenerate cases.

  • k=0k=0k=0. W={0}W=\{0\}W={0}, both premises hold vacuously, and both conclusions reduce to 0≤dim⁡0\le\dim0≤dim, which is trivially true.
  • H={0}\mathcal H=\{0\}H={0}. Linear independence forces k=0k=0k=0.
  • Consistency of hypotheses. Whether the hypotheses on PPP and AAA can hold together depends on the imported predicates.
