A No-Nonsense Introduction to General Relativity I: Birkhoff's theorem and the Schwarzschild solutionTextbook

Motivation

General relativity is summed up, in S. M. Carroll's A No-Nonsense Introduction to General Relativity (2001), by two statements: spacetime is a curved pseudo-Riemannian manifold with a metric of signature (−+++)(-+++)(−+++), and the metric obeys Einstein's equation Rμν−12Rgμν=8πGTμνR_{\mu\nu}-\frac12Rg_{\mu\nu}=8\pi GT_{\mu\nu}Rμν−21Rgμν=8πGTμν. The first exact solution of that equation, and still the most important one, is the Schwarzschild metric: it describes the gravitational field of the Sun outside its surface, the classical tests of GR (perihelion precession, light bending), and non-rotating black holes. Carroll's notes state its key property in one sentence: for a spherically symmetric metric, the vacuum equation has a unique solution, (72) — Birkhoff's theorem. This mission is the first of a series formalizing the capstone results of those notes.

Setting

We work in a single coordinate chart of four-dimensional spacetime. A point is x=(x0,x1,x2,x3)∈R4x=(x^0,x^1,x^2,x^3)\in\mathbb R^4x=(x0,x1,x2,x3)∈R4; a metric is a field x↦gμν(x)x\mapsto g_{\mu\nu}(x)x↦gμν(x) of real symmetric 4×44\times44×4 matrices of signature (−+++)(-+++)(−+++), i.e. congruent to η=diag(−1,1,1,1)\eta=\mathrm{diag}(-1,1,1,1)η=diag(−1,1,1,1). From ggg and its inverse gμνg^{\mu\nu}gμν one builds, exactly as in Carroll's equations:

  • the Christoffel symbols Γμνσ=12gσρ(∂μgνρ+∂νgρμ−∂ρgμν)\Gamma^\sigma_{\mu\nu}=\frac12g^{\sigma\rho}(\partial_\mu g_{\nu\rho}+\partial_\nu g_{\rho\mu}-\partial_\rho g_{\mu\nu})Γμνσ=21gσρ(∂μgνρ+∂νgρμ−∂ρgμν) (36) and the covariant derivative (35);
  • the Riemann tensor Rσμαβ=∂αΓμβσ−∂βΓμασ+ΓαλσΓμβλ−ΓβλσΓμαλR^\sigma{}_{\mu\alpha\beta}=\partial_\alpha\Gamma^\sigma_{\mu\beta}-\partial_\beta\Gamma^\sigma_{\mu\alpha}+\Gamma^\sigma_{\alpha\lambda}\Gamma^\lambda_{\mu\beta}-\Gamma^\sigma_{\beta\lambda}\Gamma^\lambda_{\mu\alpha}Rσμαβ=∂αΓμβσ−∂βΓμασ+ΓαλσΓμβλ−ΓβλσΓμαλ (44);
  • the Ricci tensor Rαβ=RλαλβR_{\alpha\beta}=R^\lambda{}_{\alpha\lambda\beta}Rαβ=Rλαλβ (45), Ricci scalar R=gμνRμνR=g^{\mu\nu}R_{\mu\nu}R=gμνRμν (46) and Einstein tensor Gμν=Rμν−12RgμνG_{\mu\nu}=R_{\mu\nu}-\frac12Rg_{\mu\nu}Gμν=Rμν−21Rgμν (50).

In spherical coordinates (t,r,θ,ϕ)=(x0,x1,x2,x3)(t,r,\theta,\phi)=(x^0,x^1,x^2,x^3)(t,r,θ,ϕ)=(x0,x1,x2,x3) the general spherically symmetric metric is (71)

ds2=−A(r,t) dt2+B(r,t) dr2+r2(dθ2+sin⁡2θ dϕ2),ds^2=-A(r,t)\,dt^2+B(r,t)\,dr^2+r^2(d\theta^2+\sin^2\theta\,d\phi^2),ds2=−A(r,t)dt2+B(r,t)dr2+r2(dθ2+sin2θdϕ2),

and the Schwarzschild metric (72) is the case A=1−2Gm/rA=1-2Gm/rA=1−2Gm/r, B=(1−2Gm/r)−1B=(1-2Gm/r)^{-1}B=(1−2Gm/r)−1.

Target

The goal is the uniqueness statement of §6 of the notes, in the form: for A,BA,BA,B smooth and positive on a rectangle (r1,r2)×(t1,t2)(r_1,r_2)\times(t_1,t_2)(r1,r2)×(t1,t2) with r1≥0r_1\ge0r1≥0,

Rμν[−A dt2+B dr2+r2dΩ2]=0  ⟺  ∃ m, f>0: A=f(t)(1−2Gmr), B=(1−2Gmr)−1.R_{\mu\nu}\big[-A\,dt^2+B\,dr^2+r^2d\Omega^2\big]=0\iff\exists\,m,\ f>0:\ A=f(t)\Big(1-\frac{2Gm}{r}\Big),\ B=\Big(1-\frac{2Gm}{r}\Big)^{-1}.Rμν[−Adt2+Bdr2+r2dΩ2]=0⟺∃m, f>0: A=f(t)(1−r2Gm), B=(1−r2Gm)−1.

  14. eqs. (73)–(75): Kruskal coordinates, showing r=2Gmr=2Gmr=2Gm is a coordinate singularity.

Significance

The result. Birkhoff's theorem says the exterior field of any spherically symmetric body — static, pulsating or collapsing — is the Schwarzschild field, determined by a single constant mmm. It is why the Schwarzschild solution governs the solar system and spherical collapse, and why spherically symmetric gravitational radiation does not exist. The identities (37), (47)–(51) and (67)–(69) are the working toolkit of every GR computation; (51) is what makes Einstein's equation consistent with local energy–momentum conservation.

Formalizing it. All results here are classical and proved in the textbooks. The value of the mission is a machine-checked, coordinate-level development of the curvature identities in Carroll's exact conventions, and a checked proof of Birkhoff's theorem, which requires solving the vacuum equations as a system of PDEs rather than verifying a given solution. The platform already contains a separate Einstein-field-equations development (built from a Wikipedia-based definition file with a slightly different index placement) in which Ricci-flatness of the Schwarzschild metric is proved; this mission uses its own Carroll-faithful definitions, and that earlier work may help with milestone 12.

Difficulty

Verifying that a given metric is Ricci-flat (milestone 12) is a long but mechanical computation of derivatives of explicit functions. The goal is different in kind: in the "only if" direction one must extract from Rμν=0R_{\mu\nu}=0Rμν=0 that ∂tB=0\partial_tB=0∂tB=0 (from Rtr=0R_{tr}=0Rtr=0), integrate an ODE in rrr to get B=(1−C/r)−1B=(1-C/r)^{-1}B=(1−C/r)−1 with CCC independent of ttt, and then show A/(1−C/r)A/(1-C/r)A/(1−C/r) depends on ttt only — all with the coordinate derivatives of the formal definitions, inside a region where A,BA,BA,B are only known to be smooth and positive. The general identities (47)–(51) need symmetry of second and third derivatives and the derivative of the matrix inverse.

Formalization scope

  • Everything lives in one chart: Coord = Fin 4 → ℝ, a metric is a function Coord → Matrix (Fin 4) (Fin 4) ℝ, partial derivatives are Fréchet derivatives in coordinate directions. All functions are total: non-differentiable points give derivative 000, singular matrices have inverse 000, and a/0=0a/0=0a/0=0. For that reason every statement names the open region (smoothness, signature (−+++)(-+++)(−+++), r>0r>0r>0, r≠2Gmr\ne2Gmr=2Gm, 0<θ<π0<\theta<\pi0<θ<π) on which it is claimed.
  • "Spacetime metric on UUU" means: UUU open, components C∞C^\inftyC∞ on UUU, and g(y)g(y)g(y) congruent to η\etaη for every y∈Uy\in Uy∈U (Carroll's standing assumption that the metric has signature (−+++)(-+++)(−+++)).
  • The goal is stated on a coordinate rectangle (r1,r2)×(t1,t2)(r_1,r_2)\times(t_1,t_2)(r1,r2)×(t1,t2) with the angular coordinates ranging over 0<θ<π0<\theta<\pi0<θ<π, ϕ∈R\phi\in\mathbb Rϕ∈R. The uniqueness is up to rescaling ttt (the factor f(t)f(t)f(t)); omitting fff would make the statement false.
  • Kruskal "takes the form" is encoded as the change-of-variables identity JTKJ=gSchwJ^{\mathsf T}KJ=g_{\text{Schw}}JTKJ=gSchw, with the implicit relation (75) as a separate conclusion.
  • Reusable beyond this mission: the definition file CarrollGR_Defs (Christoffel symbols, covariant derivatives, curvature, Einstein tensor in coordinates) is shared by the whole series. Contributions welcome: general lemmas about partialD of products, quotients and matrix inverses, and a tensoriality lemma for the Ricci tensor under changes of coordinates.

String Theory (Tong) I: The Critical Dimension D = 26Textbook

Motivation

The bosonic string can be quantized consistently only in D=26D=26D=26 spacetime dimensions. In lightcone quantization this appears in two ways in David Tong's Cambridge Part III lecture notes. First (Sections 2.2.2–2.3), the normal-ordering constant aaa in the mass formula M2=4α′(N−a)M^2=\frac{4}{\alpha'}(N-a)M2=α′4(N−a) is identified with a regularized Casimir energy a=D−224a=\frac{D-2}{24}a=24D−2, using ∑n≥1n\sum_{n\ge1}n∑n≥1n "===" −112-\frac1{12}−121; Lorentz invariance then forces the first excited states to be massless, which happens only for D=26D=26D=26. Second (Section 2.4), the commutator [Mi−,Mj−][M^{i-},M^{j-}][Mi−,Mj−] of lightcone Lorentz generators, which must vanish for the quantum theory to be Lorentz invariant, is proportional to a coefficient that vanishes for all oscillator levels nnn exactly when D=26D=26D=26 and a=1a=1a=1 (Goddard–Goldstone–Rebbi–Thorn 1973).

Setting

Let D≥2D\ge2D≥2 be the number of spacetime dimensions, so there are D−2D-2D−2 transverse oscillator directions, and let α′>0\alpha'>0α′>0 be the Regge slope. In lightcone gauge the mass of a closed-string state at level N=N~N=\tilde NN=N~ is (2.25)

M2=4α′(N−a),M^2=\frac{4}{\alpha'}(N-a),M2=α′4(N−a),

with an undetermined normal-ordering constant aaa. The heuristic evaluation of aaa replaces the divergent zero-point sum D−22∑n≥1n\frac{D-2}2\sum_{n\ge1}n2D−2∑n≥1n by its cut-off regularization ∑n≥1ne−ϵn\sum_{n\ge1}ne^{-\epsilon n}∑n≥1ne−ϵn, or by the Riemann zeta function value ζ(−1)\zeta(-1)ζ(−1), giving a=D−224a=\frac{D-2}{24}a=24D−2 (2.26). The first excited states α~−1iα−1j∣0;p⟩\tilde\alpha^i_{-1}\alpha^j_{-1}|0;p\rangleα~−1iα−1j∣0;p⟩ (2.28) are (D−2)2(D-2)^2(D−2)2 in number and have M2=4α′(1−D−224)M^2=\frac4{\alpha'}\bigl(1-\frac{D-2}{24}\bigr)M2=α′4(1−24D−2). In one sector the level-2 states are α−1iα−1j∣0⟩\alpha^i_{-1}\alpha^j_{-1}|0\rangleα−1iα−1j∣0⟩ (unordered pairs {i,j}\{i,j\}{i,j}, since the oscillators commute) and α−2i∣0⟩\alpha^i_{-2}|0\rangleα−2i∣0⟩. Finally, Section 2.4 states that

[Mi−,Mj−]=2(p+)2∑n>0([D−224−1]n+1n[a−D−224])(α−niαnj−α−njαni)+(α↔α~).[M^{i-},M^{j-}]=\frac{2}{(p^+)^2}\sum_{n>0}\left(\Big[\frac{D-2}{24}-1\Big]n+\frac1n\Big[a-\frac{D-2}{24}\Big]\right)\bigl(\alpha^i_{-n}\alpha^j_n-\alpha^j_{-n}\alpha^i_n\bigr)+(\alpha\leftrightarrow\tilde\alpha).[Mi−,Mj−]=(p+)22n>0∑([24D−2−1]n+n1[a−24D−2])(α−niαnj−α−njαni)+(α↔α~).

Formalization targets

Goal: the anomaly coefficient vanishes iff D=26D=26D=26, a=1a=1a=1

For D∈ND\in\mathbb ND∈N and a∈Ra\in\mathbb Ra∈R,

(∀n≥1: [D−224−1]n+1n[a−D−224]=0)  ⟺  (D=26 and a=1).\Big(\forall n\ge1:\ \Big[\frac{D-2}{24}-1\Big]n+\frac1n\Big[a-\frac{D-2}{24}\Big]=0\Big)\iff\bigl(D=26\ \text{and}\ a=1\bigr).(∀n≥1: [24D−2−1]n+n1[a−24D−2]=0)⟺(D=26 and a=1).

Milestones (in the order of the notes)

  1. Cut-off regularization: ∑n≥1ne−ϵn=1ϵ2−112+O(ϵ)\sum_{n\ge1}ne^{-\epsilon n}=\frac1{\epsilon^2}-\frac1{12}+O(\epsilon)∑n≥1ne−ϵn=ϵ21−121+O(ϵ) as ϵ→0+\epsilon\to0^+ϵ→0+.
  2. Zeta-function regularization: ζ(−1)=−112\zeta(-1)=-\frac1{12}ζ(−1)=−121.
  3. First excited states are massless iff D=26D=26D=26.
  4. Level-2 counting: 12(D−2)(D−1)+(D−2)=12D(D−1)−1\frac12(D-2)(D-1)+(D-2)=\frac12D(D-1)-121(D−2)(D−1)+(D−2)=21D(D−1)−1, the dimension of the traceless symmetric tensor representation of SO(D−1)SO(D-1)SO(D−1).

Significance

The result. The critical dimension is the single most-quoted prediction of the bosonic string, and the pair (D,a)=(26,1)(D,a)=(26,1)(D,a)=(26,1) fixes the entire lightcone spectrum: the tachyon M2=−4/α′M^2=-4/\alpha'M2=−4/α′, the massless graviton, BBB-field and dilaton, and the massive tower M2=4(N−1)/α′M^2=4(N-1)/\alpha'M2=4(N−1)/α′.

Formalizing it. This mission formalizes the mathematical steps of Tong's lightcone derivation: the two regularizations of ∑n\sum n∑n, the mass-shell and state-counting arithmetic, and the final algebraic step of the Lorentz-algebra argument. It does not formalize the operator computation of [Mi−,Mj−][M^{i-},M^{j-}][Mi−,Mj−] in the lightcone Fock space, which Tong quotes ("After a tedious computation, one finds ...") without derivation; that computation is a natural follow-up mission. The value ζ(−1)=−1/12\zeta(-1)=-1/12ζ(−1)=−1/12 is already available in Mathlib through the Bernoulli-number formula for ζ\zetaζ at negative integers.

Difficulty

The individual statements are elementary once formalized; the difficulty is faithfulness rather than proof. The regularized sum is an asymptotic statement whose leading term diverges, so it has to be stated as an O(ϵ)O(\epsilon)O(ϵ) remainder along ϵ→0+\epsilon\to0^+ϵ→0+ rather than as an equation; and the goal is a statement for all levels n≥1n\ge1n≥1, where a single level (n=1n=1n=1) only forces a=1a=1a=1 and two levels are needed to force D=26D=26D=26.

Formalization scope

The dimension DDD is a natural number and the normal-ordering constant aaa a real number. The regularized sum is Mathlib's tsum of ne−ϵnn e^{-\epsilon n}ne−ϵn over n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N (the n=0n=0n=0 term vanishes), and the asymptotic claim uses Mathlib's big-O along the right neighbourhood filter of 000. Level-2 states of one sector are counted as unordered pairs with repetition of transverse indices (Mathlib's Sym2 (Fin (D-2))) plus the D−2D-2D−2 states α−2i∣0⟩\alpha^i_{-2}|0\rangleα−2i∣0⟩; natural-number subtraction and division are safe because D≥2D\ge2D≥2 is assumed and D(D−1)D(D-1)D(D−1) is even. The zeta function is Mathlib's riemannZeta, i.e. the analytic continuation.

Termodinâmica de Buracos Negros (Menezes 2021): the first law for Kerr black holesResearch Paper

Motivation

In 1973 Bardeen, Carter and Hawking showed that stationary black holes in general relativity obey four laws with the same structure as the laws of thermodynamics, with the surface gravity κ\kappaκ of the horizon playing the role of temperature and the horizon area AAA the role of entropy (Bardeen–Carter–Hawking 1973). Two years later Hawking showed that quantum fields near a black hole produce thermal radiation at temperature TBH=κ/2πT_{BH}=\kappa/2\piTBH=κ/2π (Hawking 1975), which turned the analogy into an identification, with entropy SBH=A/4S_{BH}=A/4SBH=A/4.

The M.Sc. dissertation Termodinâmica de Buracos Negros (F. H. de C. Menezes, UFMG, 2021) presents this construction for the Kerr black hole, the rotating stationary solution of Einstein's vacuum equations. The first law, eq. (3.79), is its central quantitative statement:

δM=κ8π δA+ΩH δJ,\delta M = \frac{\kappa}{8\pi}\,\delta A + \Omega_H\,\delta J,δM=8πκδA+ΩHδJ,

relating first-order changes of mass MMM, horizon area AAA and angular momentum JJJ between neighbouring Kerr black holes, where ΩH\Omega_HΩH is the angular velocity of the horizon.

Timeline: Kerr found the rotating solution (1963); Smarr derived the mass formula M=κA/4π+2ΩHJM = \kappa A/4\pi + 2\Omega_H JM=κA/4π+2ΩHJ (1973); Bardeen, Carter and Hawking stated the four laws (1973); Hawking derived the thermal emission (1974–75).

Setting

Units are geometrized, G=c=1G=c=1G=c=1 (and ℏ=kB=1\hbar=k_B=1ℏ=kB=1 for quantum quantities). A Kerr black hole has mass M>0M>0M>0 and rotation parameter aaa with a2≤M2a^2\le M^2a2≤M2; its angular momentum is J=MaJ=MaJ=Ma. In Boyer–Lindquist coordinates (t,r,θ,φ)(t,r,\theta,\varphi)(t,r,θ,φ) the metric involves

Δ=r2−2Mr+a2,Σ=r2+a2cos⁡2θ,\Delta = r^2-2Mr+a^2,\qquad \Sigma = r^2+a^2\cos^2\theta,Δ=r2−2Mr+a2,Σ=r2+a2cos2θ,

with angular components gθθ=Σg_{\theta\theta}=\Sigmagθθ=Σ and gφφ=(r2+a2)2−Δa2sin⁡2θΣsin⁡2θg_{\varphi\varphi} = \dfrac{(r^2+a^2)^2-\Delta a^2\sin^2\theta}{\Sigma}\sin^2\thetagφφ=Σ(r2+a2)2−Δa2sin2θsin2θ. The zeros of Δ\DeltaΔ are r±=M±M2−a2r_\pm = M\pm\sqrt{M^2-a^2}r±=M±M2−a2; the event horizon is r=r+r=r_+r=r+.

  • The horizon area AAA is the area of the cross-section t=constt=\text{const}t=const, r=r+r=r_+r=r+, computed from the induced metric: A=∫0π∫02πgθθgφφ dφ dθA=\int_0^\pi\int_0^{2\pi}\sqrt{g_{\theta\theta}g_{\varphi\varphi}}\,d\varphi\,d\thetaA=∫0π∫02πgθθgφφdφdθ at r=r+r=r_+r=r+.
  • The surface gravity is κ=M2−a22M(M+M2−a2)\kappa = \dfrac{\sqrt{M^2-a^2}}{2M(M+\sqrt{M^2-a^2})}κ=2M(M+M2−a2)M2−a2 (eq. (3.3)).
  • The angular velocity of the horizon is ΩH=a2M(M+M2−a2)\Omega_H = \dfrac{a}{2M(M+\sqrt{M^2-a^2})}ΩH=2M(M+M2−a2)a (eq. (2.42)).

A Kerr black hole is non-extremal when a2<M2a^2<M^2a2<M2, equivalently ∣J∣<M2|J|<M^2∣J∣<M2.

Formalization targets

Goal — the first law (eq. (3.79))

Regard A,κ,ΩHA,\kappa,\Omega_HA,κ,ΩH as functions of (M,J)(M,J)(M,J) with a=J/Ma=J/Ma=J/M. For M>0M>0M>0 and J2<M4J^2<M^4J2<M4, the area is differentiable at (M,J)(M,J)(M,J) and, as linear forms in (δM,δJ)(\delta M,\delta J)(δM,δJ),

δM=κ8π δA+ΩH δJ.\delta M = \frac{\kappa}{8\pi}\,\delta A + \Omega_H\,\delta J .δM=8πκδA+ΩHδJ.

Milestones, in the dissertation's order

  1. Eq. (2.42): ΩH=a/(r+2+a2)\Omega_H = a/(r_+^2+a^2)ΩH=a/(r+2+a2).
  2. Eq. (3.4): κ=(r+−r−)/(2(r+2+a2))\kappa = (r_+-r_-)/(2(r_+^2+a^2))κ=(r+−r−)/(2(r+2+a2)).
  3. Eq. (3.44): A=8πM(M+M2−a2)A = 8\pi M\left(M+\sqrt{M^2-a^2}\right)A=8πM(M+M2−a2).
  4. Eq. (3.43), Smarr formula: M=κA/4π+2ΩHJM = \kappa A/4\pi + 2\Omega_H JM=κA/4π+2ΩHJ.
  5. Eq. (3.78), variation of κ\kappaκ: δM=−A4πδκ−2J δΩH\delta M = -\frac{A}{4\pi}\delta\kappa - 2J\,\delta\Omega_HδM=−4πAδκ−2JδΩH.
  6. Eq. (3.81) and the following remark: κ=0  ⟺  ∣J∣=M2\kappa=0 \iff |J|=M^2κ=0⟺∣J∣=M2.
  7. Eq. (4.137): M(t)=(M03−t/256π)1/3M(t) = (M_0^3-t/256\pi)^{1/3}M(t)=(M03−t/256π)1/3 solves M˙=−(768π)−1M−2\dot M = -(768\pi)^{-1}M^{-2}M˙=−(768π)−1M−2, M(0)=M0M(0)=M_0M(0)=M0.

In the dissertation the first law is the sum of the variation (3.45) of the Smarr formula and the relation (3.78).

Significance

The first law is the identity behind the identification TBH=κ/2πT_{BH}=\kappa/2\piTBH=κ/2π, SBH=A/4S_{BH}=A/4SBH=A/4: with these values it becomes δM=TBH δSBH+ΩH δJ\delta M = T_{BH}\,\delta S_{BH} + \Omega_H\,\delta JδM=TBHδSBH+ΩHδJ, the ordinary first law of thermodynamics for a rotating body. The Smarr formula is its integrated (Euler-relation) form, and the vanishing of κ\kappaκ at extremality underlies the dissertation's formulation of the third law.

All results are classical and proved in the literature. The contribution of the mission is a machine-checked version of the explicit Kerr relations, with the horizon area computed from the metric rather than taken as given, and a check of the dissertation's formulas. One such check is already recorded: the coefficient −2πJ-2\pi J−2πJ printed in eq. (3.78) conflicts with the dissertation's own eqs. (3.70) and (3.77), which give −2J-2J−2J, the value required for (3.79); the milestone uses −2J-2J−2J.

Difficulty

The dissertation derives the first law geometrically, from Komar integrals and a perturbation of the horizon Killing field. That route needs Lorentzian geometry, Killing horizons and Stokes' theorem on manifolds, which the Lean library does not provide. The explicit route through the Kerr formulas avoids this, but has its own obstacles: the horizon area is a double integral of a square root of a rational trigonometric expression that simplifies only on the horizon, where Δ(r+)=0\Delta(r_+)=0Δ(r+)=0; and the differentials involve M2−J2/M2\sqrt{M^2-J^2/M^2}M2−J2/M2, which is not differentiable at extremality, so the non-extremal hypothesis must be used when differentiating.

Formalization scope

All quantities are real-valued functions of real arguments, defined in one definition file in the namespace KerrBlackHoleThermo. Every theorem restricts to the physical range explicitly (M>0M>0M>0 and a2≤M2a^2\le M^2a2≤M2, or M>0M>0M>0 and J2<M4J^2<M^4J2<M4 for statements involving derivatives), so Lean's conventions for ⋅\sqrt{\cdot}⋅ of negative numbers and division by zero do not enter the physical content. First-order variations "between two neighbouring Kerr configurations" are formalized as Fréchet derivatives (HasFDerivAt) of the explicit family in the coordinates (M,J)(M,J)(M,J); the first law is an identity of linear forms on R2\mathbb R^2R2. The horizon area is defined as a metric integral, not as the closed form (3.44), so the goal cannot be reduced to a pure algebraic identity by definition.

Out of scope: the general-spacetime versions of the zeroth, second (area theorem) and third laws, which need a theory of Lorentzian manifolds, event horizons and energy conditions, and the quantum field theory derivation of Hawking radiation in Chapter 4. Contributions building that infrastructure are welcome as separate missions.

The International System of Units (SI Brochure, 9th ed.) I: base units from the seven defining constantsTextbook

Motivation

Since 20 May 2019 the International System of Units (SI) is no longer defined through material artefacts or particular experiments. Instead, the 26th General Conference on Weights and Measures fixed the exact numerical values of seven defining constants and declared that the SI is the system of units in which these constants take these values. The reference text is the BIPM's SI Brochure, 9th edition (2019), bipm.org. Every calibration certificate, every value in the CODATA tables and every textbook formula expressed in SI units rests on this definition.

The mathematical content of the new definition is small but exact: from the seven fixed values, the Brochure derives, for each of the seven base units, an explicit formula expressing that unit as a rational multiple of a product of integer powers of the defining constants (Section 2.3.1), and it asserts that any SI unit can be written through products and quotients of the defining constants (Section 2.2). These are statements about a free abelian group of unit monomials together with exact rational coefficients, so they can be checked completely.

Timeline. 1960: the 11th CGPM establishes the SI with six base units (the mole is added in 1971). 1983: the metre is redefined by fixing the speed of light ccc. 2018–2019: the 26th CGPM (Resolution 1) redefines the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole by fixing hhh, eee, kkk and NAN_ANA; the new definitions enter into force on 20 May 2019 and are published in the 9th edition of the SI Brochure.

Setting

A quantity value is written as a number times a unit. In this mission a quantity value is a pair (x,u)(x, u)(x,u), written x ux\,uxu, where x∈Rx\in\mathbb Rx∈R is the numerical value and

u=sa1 ma2 kga3 Aa4 Ka5 mola6 cda7,ai∈Z,u = \mathrm{s}^{a_1}\,\mathrm{m}^{a_2}\,\mathrm{kg}^{a_3}\,\mathrm{A}^{a_4}\,\mathrm{K}^{a_5}\,\mathrm{mol}^{a_6}\,\mathrm{cd}^{a_7},\qquad a_i\in\mathbb Z,u=sa1ma2kga3Aa4Ka5mola6cda7,ai∈Z,

is a unit monomial in the seven base units second, metre, kilogram, ampere, kelvin, mole and candela (Table 2 of the Brochure). Products multiply numerical values and add exponents; quotients and integer powers are defined accordingly; a real number rrr acts by r⋅(x u)=(rx) ur\cdot(x\,u) = (rx)\,ur⋅(xu)=(rx)u. Two quantity values are equal exactly when they have the same numerical value and the same seven exponents.

The derived units needed in Section 2.2 are Hz=s−1\mathrm{Hz}=\mathrm s^{-1}Hz=s−1, J=kg m2 s−2\mathrm J=\mathrm{kg\,m^2\,s^{-2}}J=kgm2s−2, C=A s\mathrm C=\mathrm{A\,s}C=As, W=kg m2 s−3\mathrm W=\mathrm{kg\,m^2\,s^{-3}}W=kgm2s−3, sr=m2 m−2\mathrm{sr}=\mathrm{m^2\,m^{-2}}sr=m2m−2 and lm=cd sr\mathrm{lm}=\mathrm{cd\,sr}lm=cdsr. The seven defining constants (Section 2.2, Table 1) are

Goal (Section 2.2, p. 127)

"The seven constants are chosen in such a way that any unit of the SI can be written either through a defining constant itself or through products or quotients of defining constants." Formally: for every exponent vector u∈Z7u\in\mathbb Z^7u∈Z7 there are a real number aaa and integers n1,…,n7n_1,\dots,n_7n1,…,n7 with

Significance

The result itself. The milestones are the operational content of the 2019 redefinition: they say how each base unit is recovered from the fixed constants, and together they show that the matrix of exponents of the seven defining constants with respect to the seven base units is invertible over Z\mathbb ZZ, which is exactly what the goal asserts. Every derived unit is a monomial in base units, so the goal also covers the derived units.

Formalizing it. The platform already has purely numerical checks of these formulas (rational identities of the form "coefficient ×\times× constant values =1=1=1"). This mission adds a model with units as first-class data: equalities are between quantity values, so a wrong exponent or a missing factor of c2c^2c2 is a type-level failure, not a silent numerical coincidence. The definition file is reusable for later missions in this series (derived units, Tables 4–8, prefixes).

Difficulty

The individual milestones are exact finite computations; the only care needed is bookkeeping of exponents and of large decimal constants. The goal requires choosing the integer exponents nin_ini as functions of uuu and showing that the unit monomials match componentwise — an argument that the exponent matrix is unimodular, not merely invertible over Q\mathbb QQ. Solving the system over the rationals is not enough.

Formalization scope

  • Numerical values are real numbers; exponents are integers; base units form a seven-element type. Equality of quantity values is equality of the numerical value and of all seven exponents.
  • The steradian is modelled as m2 m−2\mathrm m^2\,\mathrm m^{-2}m2m−2, i.e. the unit of dimension one, as in the Brochure (Table 4); consequently lm=cd\mathrm{lm} = \mathrm{cd}lm=cd in this model.
  • Real division and inversion follow Mathlib's conventions (0−1=00^{-1}=00−1=0); all constants used here are non-zero, so this convention never enters the milestones.
  • The goal allows an arbitrary real coefficient aaa; since unit monomials have numerical value 111, aaa is forced to be non-zero, so the statement cannot be satisfied trivially.
  • Out of scope: the physical realization of units (Section 2.3.2 onward), uncertainties, and the definitions of the non-coherent and non-SI units.

Decoherence in Two-Flavour Neutrino Oscillations (Alves 2020)Research Paper

Motivation

Neutrino oscillations are an interference phenomenon, so they are sensitive to any mechanism that degrades quantum coherence during propagation. The open quantum system description models such effects without specifying their microscopic origin: the neutrino is treated as a subsystem whose reduced density matrix evolves under a Markovian master equation. The dissertation of G. F. S. Alves (Instituto de Física, Universidade de São Paulo, 2020) develops this framework for two and three neutrino generations and uses public IceCube atmospheric data to constrain the new parameters. Its two-generation chapter derives closed-form oscillation probabilities under several choices of the dissipative term; this mission formalizes that chapter's mathematical content.

Setting

A density matrix is a positive semidefinite complex matrix of unit trace. For a two-level system (two neutrino mass eigenstates) the reduced state ρ(t)∈C2×2\rho(t)\in\mathbb C^{2\times2}ρ(t)∈C2×2 obeys the Lindblad equation with constant coefficients,

ρ˙=−i[H,ρ]+D[ρ],D[ρ]=12∑i,j=13aij(2σiρσj−{σjσi,ρ}),\dot\rho=-i[H,\rho]+D[\rho],\qquad D[\rho]=\tfrac12\sum_{i,j=1}^3 a_{ij}\bigl(2\sigma_i\rho\sigma_j-\{\sigma_j\sigma_i,\rho\}\bigr),ρ˙=−i[H,ρ]+D[ρ],D[ρ]=21i,j=1∑3aij(2σiρσj−{σjσi,ρ}),

where σ1,σ2,σ3\sigma_1,\sigma_2,\sigma_3σ1,σ2,σ3 are the Pauli matrices and the 3×33\times33×3 Kossakowski matrix a=(aij)a=(a_{ij})a=(aij) is Hermitian positive semidefinite (the condition for complete positivity). In the mass basis the vacuum Hamiltonian is H=diag⁡(0,Δm2/2E)H=\operatorname{diag}(0,\Delta m^2/2E)H=diag(0,Δm2/2E), and the mixing matrix with Majorana phase α\alphaα is

U=(cos⁡θeiαsin⁡θ−e−iαsin⁡θcos⁡θ).U=\begin{pmatrix}\cos\theta&e^{i\alpha}\sin\theta\\-e^{-i\alpha}\sin\theta&\cos\theta\end{pmatrix}.U=(cosθ−e−iαsinθeiαsinθcosθ).

The muon neutrino is produced in the state ρμ(0)=U†∣ν1⟩⟨ν1∣U\rho_\mu(0)=U^\dagger|\nu_1\rangle\langle\nu_1|Uρμ(0)=U†∣ν1⟩⟨ν1∣U, and the survival probability after a baseline LLL is Pνμ→νμ=Tr⁡{ρ(L)ρμ(0)}P_{\nu_\mu\to\nu_\mu}=\operatorname{Tr}\{\rho(L)\rho_\mu(0)\}Pνμ→νμ=Tr{ρ(L)ρμ(0)}. The linear entropy Sl(ρ)=1−Tr⁡ρ2S_l(\rho)=1-\operatorname{Tr}\rho^2Sl(ρ)=1−Trρ2 and the von Neumann entropy S(ρ)=−Tr⁡ρln⁡ρS(\rho)=-\operatorname{Tr}\rho\ln\rhoS(ρ)=−Trρlnρ measure the loss of purity.

Formalization targets

Goal: decoherent survival probability, eq. (3.24)

For the pure-decoherence Kossakowski matrix a=diag⁡(0,0,γ)a=\operatorname{diag}(0,0,\gamma)a=diag(0,0,γ), γ≥0\gamma\ge0γ≥0, every solution with ρ(0)=ρμ(0)\rho(0)=\rho_\mu(0)ρ(0)=ρμ(0) satisfies, for all L≥0L\ge0L≥0,

Pνμ→νμ=14(3+cos⁡4θ+2e−2γLcos⁡(Δm22EL)sin⁡22θ).P_{\nu_\mu\to\nu_\mu}=\frac14\Bigl(3+\cos4\theta+2e^{-2\gamma L}\cos\Bigl(\frac{\Delta m^2}{2E}L\Bigr)\sin^22\theta\Bigr).Pνμ→νμ=41(3+cos4θ+2e−2γLcos(2EΔm2L)sin22θ).

Milestones

  1. Range of the linear entropy, eq. (2.45), and of the von Neumann entropy, eqs. (2.40)–(2.41).
  2. Non-negativity of the relative entropy, eq. (2.43).
  3. Entropy increase whenever the maximally mixed state is a fixed point of DDD (Appendix B.1, two-level case).
  4. Pauli-basis form of the Dissipator, eq. (3.5).
  5. Average-energy conservation holds iff a=diag⁡(0,0,γ)a=\operatorname{diag}(0,0,\gamma)a=diag(0,0,γ), eqs. (3.19)–(3.22).
  6. The evolved state in case (1), eq. (3.23), and the population in case (4), eq. (3.26).

Significance

The goal is the formula used in the dissertation to show how decoherence damps oscillations: it reduces to the standard vacuum formula at γ=0\gamma=0γ=0, it tends to 14(3+cos⁡4θ)\tfrac14(3+\cos4\theta)41(3+cos4θ) at large LLL instead of oscillating, and it does not depend on α\alphaα. The milestones connect the formula to the structure of the Lindblad generator (energy conservation singles out this Dissipator) and to entropy growth. A formal development yields a checked two-level Lindblad toolkit (Pauli expansion of dissipators, explicit solutions, entropy bounds) reusable in other open-system missions. The results are proved informally in the source; none is known to be machine-checked.

Difficulty

The ODE part requires a uniqueness argument for a linear matrix ODE on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞) given only one-sided derivatives at t=0t=0t=0, plus exact trigonometric bookkeeping. The entropy milestones need spectral calculus for Hermitian matrices (Klein's inequality, concavity of −xln⁡x-x\ln x−xlnx) and, for Appendix B.1, the monotonicity of relative entropy under completely positive trace-preserving maps together with complete positivity of Lindblad semigroups, neither of which is expected to be available off the shelf.

Formalization scope

Matrices are Matrix (Fin 2) (Fin 2) ℂ; the Kossakowski matrix is Matrix (Fin 3) (Fin 3) ℂ with indices 0,1,20,1,20,1,2 for the thesis' 1,2,31,2,31,2,3. Solutions are curves R→C2×2\mathbb R\to\mathbb C^{2\times2}R→C2×2 satisfying the Lindblad equation entrywise for t≥0t\ge0t≥0 (derivatives within [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞)); the exponential eLte^{\mathcal Lt}eLt is not used. Entropies use the continuous functional calculus. Two printed formulas are corrected in the drafts: the sign of the ρ0 Im(aij)\rho_0\,\mathrm{Im}(a_{ij})ρ0Im(aij) terms in eq. (3.5), and the overall sign of the off-diagonal entries in eq. (3.23); both corrections are explained in the corresponding items. The two-generation cases (4) and (5) survival probabilities, eqs. (3.25) and (3.27), and the three-generation and IceCube analyses are out of scope.

The role postulates force exactly seven pointsTextbook

Motivation

The Shape Zero model (Shape Zero LLC, unpublished) reaches the Fano plane — the seven-point, seven-line configuration behind the seven imaginary units of the octonions — by a combinatorial route (C1 Formal Proofs, §3). Points are arranged in Steiner triple systems, and each point of each line is given one of three roles. The model's claim is that the role postulates alone force the number of points to be exactly seven. This mission proves that claim.

What this mission does NOT prove.

  • Not that the system is the Fano plane. It proves the point count is 777. That every Steiner triple system on 777 points is the Fano plane up to relabelling is a classical result, but it is not formalized here.
  • Not the modelling premise. Why lines have three points, and why there are three roles, is an input of the model, not derived here.
  • Not the later steps from the Fano plane to the octonions, and from there to the node size n=3n = 3n=3 and u(3)\mathfrak{u}(3)u(3).

Two corrections to C1 §3 built into this mission.

  • At least one point is required. The empty system — no points, no lines — satisfies every condition vacuously and has 000 points, so C1 Theorem 3.6 as stated is false for it. The goal carries the hypothesis 0<n0 < n0<n. This is proved (in Lean, locally): the empty system is a Steiner triple system with a role colouring, so the statement without 0<n0 < n0<n is false.
  • C1 Theorem 3.3(a) is not used. Its condition "any two lines meet" does not force 777 points: it also holds for a single triple (333 points) and a single point, where there is no pair of lines to fail. This mission uses the role postulates instead.

Setting

Fix a natural number nnn and take the points {0,…,n−1}\{0, \dots, n-1\}{0,…,n−1}. A Steiner triple system is a family of subsets, called lines, such that

  1. every line has exactly 333 points, and
  2. every pair of distinct points lies on exactly one line.

A role colouring assigns to each point xxx and line ℓ\ellℓ a role ρ(x,ℓ)∈{0,1,2}\rho(x, \ell) \in \{0, 1, 2\}ρ(x,ℓ)∈{0,1,2} such that

  1. the three points of a line get three different roles;
  2. completeness: every point takes every role at least once, on some line through it;
  3. minimality: every point takes every role at most once — two different lines through xxx give xxx different roles.

In Lean these are RolesForceSeven.STS n and RolesForceSeven.RoleColouring S role, with points Fin n and lines Finset (Fin n).

Formalization targets

Goal: the role postulates force exactly seven points

n≥1, a Steiner triple system on n points with a role colouring  ⟹  n=7.n \ge 1,\ \text{a Steiner triple system on } n \text{ points with a role colouring} \;\Longrightarrow\; n = 7 .n≥1, a Steiner triple system on n points with a role colouring⟹n=7.

This is RolesForceSeven.roles_force_seven. It asserts the point count only.

Milestones

  1. M1 (replication count). In any Steiner triple system, every point lies on exactly rrr lines with 2r+1=n2r + 1 = n2r+1=n.
  2. M2 (three lines per point). Under a role colouring, every point lies on exactly 333 lines.

Corollaries

  • A — the Fano plane has a role colouring. The Fano plane on {0,…,6}\{0, \dots, 6\}{0,…,6}, with lines {i,i+1,i+3}\{i, i+1, i+3\}{i,i+1,i+3} modulo 777, admits a role colouring. Without this the goal could be vacuously true.
  • B — AG(2, 3) is excluded (C1 Corollary 3.7): no Steiner triple system on 999 points has a role colouring.

Significance

The result itself. It turns the model's role postulates into a precise count: whatever the Steiner triple system, if it carries a role colouring and has a point, it has exactly seven points. Corollary A shows the conditions are satisfiable, and Corollary B rules out the next Steiner triple system, AG(2, 3), explicitly.

Formalizing it. The C1 statement omits the non-emptiness hypothesis and is false for the empty system; the formal statement makes the hypothesis explicit and shows it is needed. The numerical check (Fano plane: 484848 role colourings; AG(2, 3): 000; single triple: 000) is replaced by a proof for every nnn.

Numerical cross-check

systempointslines through each pointrole colourings
Fano plane7348
AG(2, 3)940
single triple310
empty system0—vacuous (all conditions hold)

Difficulty

Moderate. The central step is the replication count: the lines through a point xxx must be shown to cover every other point exactly once, two at a time, which is a double-counting argument over the pairs through xxx. The role postulates then fix the replication number at three. The Fano plane corollary is a finite check.

Formalization scope

  • Points are Fin n; lines are finite sets of points, with no ambient geometry assumed.

Dyson 2013: Is a Graviton Detectable?Research Paper

Motivation

Whether the quantization of the gravitational field is observable is a long-standing question at the interface of general relativity and quantum theory. In his 2013 talk Is a Graviton Detectable? (doi:10.1142/S0217751X1330041X), Freeman Dyson examined three families of hypothetical single-graviton detectors and estimated, for each, why it fails: LIGO-type interferometers (Sec. 3), atoms absorbing a graviton by the gravitoelectric effect (Secs. 4–5), and Gertsenshtein photon–graviton conversion in a magnetic field (Secs. 6–7).

Most of the paper consists of order-of-magnitude physical estimates. A part of it, however, consists of precise mathematical statements: exact algebraic consequences of the stated physical relations, and one genuine analytic inequality about the quadrupole factor QQQ that controls the graviton absorption cross-section of a bound particle. This mission collects those statements.

Setting

Sections 3. Let c,G,ℏ>0c, G, \hbar > 0c,G,ℏ>0 be the speed of light, Newton's constant and the reduced Planck constant. The Planck length is Lp=(Gℏ/c3)1/2L_p = (G\hbar/c^3)^{1/2}Lp=(Gℏ/c3)1/2 (Eq. (5)). A gravitational wave of strain amplitude fff and angular frequency ω\omegaω has energy density E=c232πGω2f2E = \frac{c^2}{32\pi G}\omega^2 f^2E=32πGc2ω2f2 (Eq. (2)); a single graviton of frequency ω\omegaω has energy density at most Es=ℏω4/c3E_s = \hbar\omega^4/c^3Es=ℏω4/c3 (Eq. (3)).

Section 4. For an electron bound in a state with zero angular momentum about the zzz-axis, with real wave function f(s,z)f(s,z)f(s,z) in cylindrical coordinates (s>0s>0s>0 the distance from the zzz-axis), let f′=∂f/∂sf' = \partial f/\partial sf′=∂f/∂s and define

Q=∫R∫0∞s3[f′]2 ds dz2∫R∫0∞s f2 ds dz(Eq. (16)).Q = \frac{\int_{\mathbb R}\int_0^\infty s^3 [f']^2\, ds\, dz}{2\int_{\mathbb R}\int_0^\infty s\, f^2\, ds\, dz} \qquad \text{(Eq. (16))}.Q=2∫R∫0∞sf2dsdz∫R∫0∞s3[f′]2dsdz(Eq. (16)).

The s-state of Eq. (19) is f=r−ne−r/Rf = r^{-n} e^{-r/R}f=r−ne−r/R with r=s2+z2r = \sqrt{s^2+z^2}r=s2+z2.

Sections 6–7. For a transverse magnetic field BBB, the mixing length is L=2c2/(G1/2B)L = 2c^2/(G^{1/2}B)L=2c2/(G1/2B) (Eq. (29)) and the photon-to-graviton conversion probability over a distance DDD is P=sin⁡2(D/L)P = \sin^2(D/L)P=sin2(D/L) (Eq. (28)). Vacuum nonlinearity slows the photon by the fraction g=kαB2/(360π2Hc2)g = k\alpha B^2/(360\pi^2 H_c^2)g=kαB2/(360π2Hc2) (Eq. (36)), where α\alphaα is the fine-structure constant and HcH_cHc the critical field, giving the coherence length Lc=c/(gω)L_c = c/(g\omega)Lc=c/(gω) (Eq. (37)).

Formalization targets

  • Eq. (37): for k=4k = 4k=4, Lc=90π2cHc2/(αB2ω)L_c = 90\pi^2 c H_c^2/(\alpha B^2\omega)Lc=90π2cHc2/(αB2ω).
  • Eqs. (38)–(39): if D≤LcD \le L_cD≤Lc then P≤2025π4GHc4/(α2c2B2ω2)P \le 2025\pi^4 G H_c^4/(\alpha^2 c^2 B^2\omega^2)P≤2025π4GHc4/(α2c2B2ω2) (the symbolic form of P≤1036/(B2ω2)P \le 10^{36}/(B^2\omega^2)P≤1036/(B2ω2)).

Significance

Eq. (18) is what allows Dyson to conclude that the averaged absorption cross-section 4π2Lp2Q4\pi^2L_p^2 Q4π2Lp2Q (Eq. (14)) is, for every bound particle, of the order of the Planck area; together with Eq. (20) it shows QQQ is of order unity for tightly bound s-states. The Section 3 bounds are the precise algebraic content of the argument that measuring distances to Planck accuracy forces the apparatus inside its own Schwarzschild radius. The Section 7 bounds are the algebraic content of the argument that vacuum birefringence limits Gertsenshtein conversion.

None of these statements has, to our knowledge, a machine-checked proof. Eq. (18) is a weighted Hardy-type inequality on the half line with sharp constant, applied slice by slice; formalizing it produces reusable one-dimensional weighted Hardy inequalities. Eq. (20) requires explicit Gamma-function integrals in cylindrical coordinates.

Difficulty

For Eq. (18) the difficulty is analytic: the inequality must hold for all admissible fff, including functions that are not compactly supported and may be singular on the zzz-axis, and it is strict although its sharp constant is not attained. Boundary terms of the integration by parts behind Eq. (17) must be controlled using only the integrability assumptions. The printed Eq. (17) has the sign f′−f/sf' - f/sf′−f/s; with that sign the integral is trivially positive and does not imply Eq. (18). The mission uses f′+f/sf' + f/sf′+f/s, the sign under which (17) implies (18). The algebraic milestones are elementary.

Formalization scope

All quantities are real. f:R→R→Rf : \mathbb R \to \mathbb R \to \mathbb Rf:R→R→R is a function of (s,z)(s,z)(s,z); f′f'f′ is deriv in the first variable; integrals are Lebesgue integrals over the half plane {s>0}×R\{s > 0\}\times\mathbb R{s>0}×R. The admissible class for Eqs. (17)–(18) is: f(⋅,z)f(\cdot,z)f(⋅,z) differentiable at every s>0s>0s>0, sf2s f^2sf2 and s3[f′]2s^3[f']^2s3[f′]2 integrable on the half plane, and fff not almost-everywhere zero there. These hypotheses rule out the degenerate reading Q=0/0Q = 0/0Q=0/0 (Lean's division returns 000). Eq. (20) requires R>0R > 0R>0 and n<3/2n < 3/2n<3/2, the range in which the integrals in Eq. (16) converge. Physical constants are arbitrary positive reals; numerical cgs values (e.g. Eqs. (5), (21), (31)) are not formalized. The heuristic parts of the paper (Bohr–Rosenfeld argument, the sum rule (14), astrophysical source estimates, neutrino backgrounds) are out of scope.

Linear algebra·Captain: ShapeZero

The passivity-admissible couplings have dimension n² = dim u(n)Textbook

Motivation

The Shape Zero model (Shape Zero LLC, unpublished) aims to obtain all three factors of the Standard Model gauge structure — U(1)U(1)U(1), SU(2)SU(2)SU(2) and SU(3)SU(3)SU(3) — from a single linear-algebra statement applied at three node sizes. A node carrying nnn oscillator pairs has a 2n2n2n-dimensional real state space with a complex structure JJJ. Within the model, the couplings that do no net work (passive couplings) are the symmetric matrices, and those that respect JJJ are the ones commuting with it. The claim is that the couplings satisfying both conditions form a real vector space of dimension exactly n2n^2n2, which is the dimension of the unitary Lie algebra u(n)\mathfrak{u}(n)u(n) (Unitary group):

node size nnnadmissible dimensionLie algebra
11u(1)\mathfrak{u}(1)u(1)
24u(2)=u(1)⊕su(2)\mathfrak{u}(2) = \mathfrak{u}(1) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)u(2)=u(1)⊕su(2)
39u(3)=u(1)⊕su(3)\mathfrak{u}(3) = \mathfrak{u}(1) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(3)u(3)=u(1)⊕su(3)

The dimension count has so far been checked numerically for n=1,…,5n = 1, \dots, 5n=1,…,5 only, giving 1,4,9,16,251, 4, 9, 16, 251,4,9,16,25. A machine-checked proof covers every nnn, and it is the claim a physicist examining the model would check first.

What this mission does NOT prove. This mission proves the linear algebra: symmetric matrices commuting with JJJ form a space of dimension n2n^2n2. It does not prove the physics step that passivity forces a coupling to be symmetric. That step is a separate premise of the model, and a completed mission must not be read as establishing it.

Setting

Fix a natural number nnn. Consider real 2n×2n2n \times 2n2n×2n matrices, with rows and columns indexed by two copies of {0,…,n−1}\{0, \dots, n-1\}{0,…,n−1}, so that each matrix is written in 2×22 \times 22×2 block form with n×nn \times nn×n blocks:

W=(ABCD).W = \begin{pmatrix} A & B \\ C & D \end{pmatrix}.W=(ACBD).

Let III be the n×nn \times nn×n identity matrix and define the standard complex structure

J=(0−II0),J = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -I \\ I & 0 \end{pmatrix},J=(0I−I0),

which satisfies J2=−1J^2 = -1J2=−1. In the Lean development this matrix is PassivityUn.stdJ n, and the index type is PassivityUn.Blk n, the disjoint union of two copies of Fin n.

Two real linear subspaces of the 4n24n^24n2-dimensional space of such matrices are defined:

  1. symm n: the symmetric matrices, WT=WW^{\mathsf T} = WWT=W;
  2. commJ n: the matrices commuting with JJJ, WJ=JWWJ = JWWJ=JW.

The admissible coupling class admissible n is their intersection:

An={ W∈R2n×2n:WT=W and WJ=JW }.\mathcal{A}_n = \{\, W \in \mathbb{R}^{2n \times 2n} : W^{\mathsf T} = W \ \text{and}\ WJ = JW \,\}.An={W∈R2n×2n:WT=W and WJ=JW}.

Formalization targets

Goal: the admissible class has dimension n2n^2n2

dim⁡RAn=n2for every n∈N.\dim_{\mathbb{R}} \mathcal{A}_n = n^2 \qquad \text{for every } n \in \mathbb{N}.dimRAn=n2for every n∈N.

This is PassivityUn.admissible_finrank. It asserts the exact dimension for all nnn at once, not for a particular node size.

Milestones

  1. M1. J⋅J=−1J \cdot J = -1J⋅J=−1, so JJJ is a complex structure.
  2. M2. A block matrix (ABCD)\begin{pmatrix} A & B \\ C & D \end{pmatrix}(ACBD) commutes with JJJ exactly when D=AD = AD=A and B=−CB = -CB=−C.
  3. M3. A block matrix (A−BBA)\begin{pmatrix} A & -B \\ B & A \end{pmatrix}(AB−BA) is symmetric exactly when AT=AA^{\mathsf T} = AAT=A and BT=−BB^{\mathsf T} = -BBT=−B.
  4. M4. The dimension counts of symmetric and antisymmetric n×nn \times nn×n matrices add to n2n^2n2: n(n+1)2+n(n−1)2=n2\tfrac{n(n+1)}{2} + \tfrac{n(n-1)}{2} = n^22n(n+1)+2n(n−1)=n2.

Significance

The result itself. The goal identifies the admissible coupling class with the real form of the n×nn \times nn×n Hermitian matrices, the space whose dimension is that of u(n)\mathfrak{u}(n)u(n) (Hermitian matrix). Applied at n=1,2,3n = 1, 2, 3n=1,2,3 it gives the dimensions 111, 444 and 999, which the Shape Zero model matches with u(1)\mathfrak{u}(1)u(1), u(2)=u(1)⊕su(2)\mathfrak{u}(2) = \mathfrak{u}(1) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)u(2)=u(1)⊕su(2) and u(3)=u(1)⊕su(3)\mathfrak{u}(3) = \mathfrak{u}(1) \oplus \mathfrak{su}(3)u(3)=u(1)⊕su(3). Without a proof for general nnn, the model rests on a finite numerical check.

Formalizing it. The underlying fact is standard linear algebra, a special case of the correspondence between real matrices commuting with a complex structure and complex-linear maps (Linear complex structure). No machine-checked statement of this exact dimension count was found in the platform library. The mission produces a verified, general-nnn statement whose hypotheses are fully explicit, and it separates the verified linear algebra from the unverified physical premise.

Difficulty

Every step is standard linear algebra, so the difficulty is in the formal bookkeeping rather than the mathematics. The dimension of a subspace defined by equations is not computed by any Mathlib tactic. It has to be obtained by exhibiting an explicit linear equivalence with spaces of known dimension, and that requires moving between the 2n×2n2n \times 2n2n×2n matrix indexed by a disjoint union and its four n×nn \times nn×n blocks. Checking small cases numerically, as has already been done, does not extend to a statement about every nnn.

Formalization scope

  • Matrices are real (ℝ), not complex. The complex structure enters only through the fixed real matrix JJJ.
  • Matrices are indexed by Fin n ⊕ Fin n (PassivityUn.Blk n) rather than Fin (2n), so that block decomposition via Mathlib's Matrix.fromBlocks is direct. The first copy of Fin n indexes the upper/left blocks.
  • Each condition is defined as the kernel of a linear map: symmetry as the kernel of W↦WT−WW \mapsto W^{\mathsf T} - WW↦WT−W, and commuting with JJJ as the kernel of W↦WJ−JWW \mapsto WJ - JWW↦WJ−JW. Both are therefore subspaces by construction, with no hand-written closure proofs.
  • Dimension is Module.finrank ℝ. The ambient space is finite-dimensional, so the convention that finrank of an infinite-dimensional space is 000 never applies.
  • The case n=0n = 0n=0 is included, and there the statement reads 0=00 = 00=0. This is not a trivialization: the claim is quantified over all nnn, and every n≥1n \ge 1n≥1 is a nontrivial instance.
  • M4 is stated with natural-number division and truncated subtraction. Both are exact here, because n(n±1)n(n \pm 1)n(n±1) is always even and n⋅(n−1)=0n \cdot (n - 1) = 0n⋅(n−1)=0 when n=0n = 0n=0.

The development needs only Mathlib's block matrices, transpose, linear maps and finrank. The block-characterization lemmas (M2, M3) are reusable for any statement relating real matrices commuting with JJJ to complex matrices. Contributions are welcome on the milestones and on the assembling isomorphism.

g-factor (physics): the classical gyromagnetic baseline and g-factor conventionsTextbook

Motivation

The g-factor of a particle, nucleus or atom is the dimensionless number that measures its magnetic moment in units of the moment a classical particle with the same charge and angular momentum would have. Because it is both measured and computed to very high precision, small discrepancies between measured and predicted g-factors are used as tests of the Standard Model; the electron g-factor is known to about two parts in 101310^{13}1013, and the muon g-factor has for two decades shown a several-standard-deviation tension between experiment and theory.

This mission formalizes the mathematical content of the Wikipedia article g-factor (physics): the definitions it gives, the elementary identities it states between them, and the numerical claims it makes about the experimental data.

Setting

All vectors live in R3\mathbb R^3R3, written as functions {0,1,2}→R\{0,1,2\}\to\mathbb R{0,1,2}→R, with component 222 playing the role of the zzz component.

  • Dirac particle. For charge eee, mass mmm, spin angular momentum S\mathbf SS and g-factor ggg, the spin magnetic moment is μ=g e2m S\boldsymbol\mu = g\,\frac{e}{2m}\,\mathbf Sμ=g2meS (diracMagneticMoment).
  • Nuclear magneton convention. With μN=eℏ2mp\mu_N = \frac{e\hbar}{2m_p}μN=2mpeℏ (nuclearMagneton), the moment of a nucleon or nucleus with spin I\mathbf II is μ=g μNℏ I\boldsymbol\mu = g\,\frac{\mu_N}{\hbar}\,\mathbf Iμ=gℏμNI (nuclearMagneticMoment).
  • Bohr magneton μB=eℏ2me\mu_B = \frac{e\hbar}{2m_e}μB=2meeℏ (bohrMagneton) and electron orbital moment μL=−gLμBℏL\boldsymbol\mu_L = -g_L\frac{\mu_B}{\hbar}\mathbf LμL=−gLℏμBL (electronOrbitalMagneticMoment).
  • Classical point charges. For finitely many point particles with charges qiq_iqi, masses mim_imi, positions ri\mathbf r_iri and velocities vi\mathbf v_ivi, the magnetic moment is μ=∑iqi2 ri×vi\boldsymbol\mu = \sum_i \frac{q_i}{2}\,\mathbf r_i\times\mathbf v_iμ=∑i2qiri×vi (classicalMagneticMoment) and the angular momentum is L=∑imi ri×vi\mathbf L = \sum_i m_i\,\mathbf r_i\times\mathbf v_iL=∑imiri×vi (classicalAngularMomentum).

Formalization targets

Goal: the classical baseline has g=1g = 1g=1

The article defines the g-factor as the ratio of a particle's magnetic moment to the one "expected of a classical particle of the same charge and angular momentum", and says gL=1g_L = 1gL=1 "by a quantum-mechanical argument analogous to the derivation of the classical magnetogyric ratio". The goal makes that classical baseline precise: for a system whose charge-to-mass ratio is the same for every particle (qi=κmiq_i = \kappa m_iqi=κmi, mi>0m_i>0mi>0), with total charge Q=∑iqiQ=\sum_i q_iQ=∑iqi and total mass M=∑imiM=\sum_i m_iM=∑imi,

μ  =  1⋅Q2M L.\boldsymbol\mu \;=\; 1\cdot\frac{Q}{2M}\,\mathbf L .μ=1⋅2MQL.

Milestones

  1. The two forms of the nuclear-magneton formula agree: gμNℏI=ge2mpIg\frac{\mu_N}{\hbar}\mathbf I = g\frac{e}{2m_p}\mathbf IgℏμNI=g2mpeI.
  2. For a particle of proton mass, the Dirac-particle and nuclear-magneton definitions assign the same g-factor.
  3. The zzz component of the electron orbital moment is −gLμBmℓ-g_L\mu_B m_\ell−gLμBmℓ, which equals −μBmℓ-\mu_B m_\ell−μBmℓ when gL=1g_L=1gL=1.
  4. The E821 muon result differs from the quoted theoretical prediction by between 3.43.43.4 and 3.53.53.5 combined standard deviations.
  5. The relative standard uncertainties in the article's CODATA table round to the values printed there.

Significance

The goal is the statement that fixes the normalization of every g-factor in the article: it says that a classical body with uniform charge-to-mass ratio has gyromagnetic ratio exactly Q/(2M)Q/(2M)Q/(2M), i.e. g=1g=1g=1, so any deviation from 111 (such as ge≈−2g_e\approx-2ge≈−2) is a genuinely non-classical effect. The milestones pin down the conventions (Dirac versus nuclear magneton, sign conventions for the electron orbital moment) and check the numerical claims the article makes from its data. None of these results is new; the contribution is a machine-checked, convention-explicit record of them.

Difficulty

The mathematics is elementary. The work is in the conventions: division by a mass or by ℏ\hbarℏ is total in Lean and returns 000 at 000, so positivity of masses and of ℏ\hbarℏ must be carried explicitly, and the numerical milestones must be stated with the exact decimal values of the source rather than rounded ones.

Formalization scope

  • Vectors are Fin 3 → ℝ; the cross product is Mathlib's crossProduct. Component index 2 is the zzz axis.
  • Physical constants are free real parameters; no numerical value of eee, ℏ\hbarℏ or any mass is fixed. Where the source's formula divides by a quantity, the statement assumes it nonzero or positive.
  • Uncertainties written as x(dd)x(\text{dd})x(dd) in the article are read as a standard uncertainty in the last two digits of xxx; the E821 milestone combines the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in quadrature, which is the standard convention but is not spelled out in the article.
  • Not formalized: the finite-nuclear-mass formula gL=1−1/Mg_L = 1 - 1/MgL=1−1/M and the Landé factor gJg_JgJ, which the article quotes from other sources without derivation.

Caesium Standard: the SI base units from the defining constantsTextbook

Motivation

Since the 2019 revision of the SI, every unit in the system is fixed by assigning exact numerical values to seven defining constants: the caesium hyperfine transition frequency ΔνCs\Delta\nu_{\mathrm{Cs}}ΔνCs, the speed of light ccc, the Planck constant hhh, the elementary charge eee, the Boltzmann constant kkk, the Avogadro constant NAN_{\mathrm A}NA and the luminous efficacy KcdK_{\mathrm{cd}}Kcd. Six of the seven base units — every one except the mole — therefore carry ΔνCs\Delta\nu_{\mathrm{Cs}}ΔνCs in their definition, and the caesium standard is the anchor of the whole system. The first caesium clock was built by Louis Essen and Jack Parry in 1955 (Nature 176, 280); the caesium frequency was tied to the ephemeris second by Markowitz, Hall, Essen and Parry in 1958 (Phys. Rev. Lett. 1, 105); the 13th CGPM adopted the caesium definition of the second in 1967, the CIPM added the "atom at rest at 0 K0\ \mathrm K0 K" qualification in 1997, the metre was redefined in terms of ccc and the second in 1983, and the 26th CGPM fixed the present constant-based system in 2018, effective 2019 (Resolution 1 (2018)).

The audience for this mission is anyone who relies on those conversion factors being right: metrology, unit-aware computation, and formal libraries that want a machine-checked statement of what the SI actually fixes, rather than a table copied by hand.

Setting

All seven defining constants are exact decimal numbers, hence exact rationals:

From these one forms the four parameters of the caesium-133 hyperfine transition radiation:

Significance

What the results give is a machine-checked transcription of the exact arithmetic content of the 2019 SI: every coefficient in the table of base and derived units, checked against the defining constants rather than against another table. Downstream, a unit-conversion or dimensional-analysis development can cite these identities instead of re-deriving or re-typing sixteen-digit decimals, where a single transposed digit is a silent error.

What formalizing adds is faithfulness checking, not new mathematics. Every statement in this mission is a true identity between exact rational numbers; none of them is open in the mathematical sense.

Difficulty

This mission is arithmetically easy on purpose, and that should be stated plainly: each target is an equality between explicit rational numbers, and a solver who unfolds the constants and normalizes the arithmetic will close it. There is no analytic content, no limit, no inequality beyond the two decimal bounds on ΔλCs\Delta\lambda_{\mathrm{Cs}}ΔλCs.

The real failure mode is transcription. The coefficients carry up to 515151 significant digits (the pascal), they are quotients of two decimals rather than single numbers, and the source displays several of them in a layout where a numerator and a denominator can easily be swapped. A statement that is off in the last digit is false, not approximately true, and is the kind of defect this mission exists to exclude.

Formalization scope

Every quantity is modelled as an element of Q\mathbb QQ: the numerical value of the physical quantity in the corresponding SI unit. Dimensions are not tracked. A clause such as "1 kg=α h ΔνCs/c21\ \mathrm{kg} = \alpha\, h\,\Delta\nu_{\mathrm{Cs}}/c^{2}1 kg=αhΔνCs/c2" is formalized as the numerical identity α h ΔνCs/c2=1\alpha\, h\,\Delta\nu_{\mathrm{Cs}}/c^{2} = 1αhΔνCs/c2=1, the unit bookkeeping being carried in the prose only; a development that wants dimensional safety must add a dimension layer on top. Decimal literals are exact rationals, not floating-point numbers, and no real-number approximation enters.

The statements are closed identities between explicit rationals, so none of them can be vacuous: each is either true or false, with no hypothesis to satisfy and no quantifier to exploit. The one quantified statement — the dependence of the unit formulas on the caesium frequency — ranges over all positive rationals and asserts non-equality in six cases and equality in two.

The definition layer is a single file of exact rational constants and the caesium radiation parameters; it is reusable by any later unit-related development. Contributions that would extend the mission usefully: a dimension-tracking layer over these constants, and the pre-2019 definitions (the krypton-86 metre, the IPK kilogram, the triple-point kelvin) stated in the same style for comparison.

Luminous efficacy of radiation: the 683.002 lm/W ceilingTextbook

Motivation

Two different numbers describe the output of a lamp. Radiant flux Φe\Phi_eΦe is the power it radiates, in watts. Luminous flux Φv\Phi_vΦv is how much of that radiation the standard human eye registers, in lumens — a weighted integral of the radiated power in which each wavelength is counted according to the sensitivity of the eye at that wavelength. Their ratio

K  =  ΦvΦeK \;=\; \frac{\Phi_v}{\Phi_e}K=ΦeΦv

is the luminous efficacy of radiation, measured in lumens per watt: it says what fraction of the radiated power is usable for illumination. Photometry is built on this pair of quantities. The lumen and the candela are defined from the watt through exactly such a weighting, with the SI defining constant Kcd=683K_{\mathrm{cd}} = 683Kcd=683 lm/W fixing the scale at the frequency 540×1012540 \times 10^{12}540×1012 Hz, and every efficiency figure quoted for a lamp — a tungsten filament at 151515 lm/W, a white LED above 100100100 lm/W — is a statement about this ratio or its wall-plug variant.

The basic structural fact of the subject is that this ratio is bounded. Since the eye's sensitivity curve is normalized to a maximum of 111, no source, however designed, can exceed the maximum spectral luminous efficacy: 683.002683.002683.002 lm/W under photopic (daylight, cone) vision, and about 170017001700 lm/W under scotopic (dark-adapted, rod) vision. Those two numbers are the ceilings against which every lighting technology is measured, and they are what this mission formalizes.

Setting

Wavelengths are real numbers (nanometres). A spectral radiant flux distribution of a source is modelled as a finite Borel measure μ\muμ on the wavelength axis: μ(A)\mu(A)μ(A) is the power, in watts, that the source radiates at wavelengths in AAA. Its radiant flux is the total mass

Φe  =  μ(R).\Phi_e \;=\; \mu(\mathbb{R}).Φe=μ(R).

A luminosity function (luminous efficiency function) with peak at λ0\lambda_0λ0 is a measurable V:R→RV : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}V:R→R with

0≤V(λ)≤1for all λ,V(λ0)=1.0 \le V(\lambda) \le 1 \quad \text{for all } \lambda, \qquad V(\lambda_0) = 1 .0≤V(λ)≤1for all λ,V(λ0)=1.

For photopic vision the CIE 1924 curve VVV peaks at λ0=555\lambda_0 = 555λ0=555 nm; the scotopic curve V′V'V′ peaks at λ0=507\lambda_0 = 507λ0=507 nm. The development assumes only the normalization above, never a specific tabulated curve, so every statement holds for the photopic curve, the scotopic curve, and any other normalized weighting.

Given a maximum spectral luminous efficacy Kmax⁡K_{\max}Kmax — the value Km=683.002K_m = 683.002Km=683.002 lm/W for photopic vision, 170017001700 lm/W for scotopic vision — the spectral luminous efficacy is K(λ)=Kmax⁡V(λ)K(\lambda) = K_{\max} V(\lambda)K(λ)=KmaxV(λ) and the luminous flux is

Φv  =  ∫RK(λ) dμ(λ)  =  Kmax⁡∫RV dμ.\Phi_v \;=\; \int_{\mathbb{R}} K(\lambda) \, \mathrm{d}\mu(\lambda) \;=\; K_{\max} \int_{\mathbb{R}} V \,\mathrm{d}\mu .Φv=∫RK(λ)dμ(λ)=Kmax∫RVdμ.

The luminous efficacy of radiation is K=Φv/ΦeK = \Phi_v / \Phi_eK=Φv/Φe, the dimensionless luminous efficiency is K/Kmax⁡K / K_{\max}K/Kmax, and the luminous efficacy of a source (overall, or wall-plug, efficacy) is Φv/P\Phi_v / PΦv/P, where PPP is the total input power the source consumes — electrical, chemical or other — of which the radiated part is Φe≤P\Phi_e \le PΦe≤P.

Modelling the spectrum as a measure rather than as a density is what makes the two halves of the target statement expressible at once. A spectrum with a spectral radiant flux density Φe,λ\Phi_{e,\lambda}Φe,λ is the measure dμ=Φe,λ dλ\mathrm{d}\mu = \Phi_{e,\lambda} \, \mathrm{d}\lambdadμ=Φe,λdλ, for which the formulas above reduce to the usual integrals

Φv=Kmax⁡∫V(λ) Φe,λ dλ,Φe=∫Φe,λ dλ;\Phi_v = K_{\max}\int V(\lambda)\, \Phi_{e,\lambda} \,\mathrm{d}\lambda, \qquad \Phi_e = \int \Phi_{e,\lambda} \,\mathrm{d}\lambda ;Φv=Kmax∫V(λ)Φe,λdλ,Φe=∫Φe,λdλ;

an ideal monochromatic source at λ0\lambda_0λ0, which has no density with respect to wavelength, is the point mass δλ0\delta_{\lambda_0}δλ0.

Formalization targets

Goal — the photopic ceiling is attained at 683.002683.002683.002 lm/W

683.002  =  max⁡{ Km∫V dμμ(R)  :  μ finite, μ(R)>0 },Km=683.002 lm/W.683.002 \;=\; \max\left\{\, \frac{K_m \int V \,\mathrm{d}\mu}{\mu(\mathbb{R})} \;:\; \mu \text{ finite}, \ \mu(\mathbb{R}) > 0 \,\right\}, \qquad K_m = 683.002 \text{ lm/W}.683.002=max{μ(R)Km∫Vdμ:μ finite, μ(R)>0},Km=683.002 lm/W.

This is a maximum, not a supremum: the assertion is both that no spectral radiant flux distribution exceeds 683.002683.002683.002 lm/W and that some distribution — the monochromatic source at 555555555 nm — attains it exactly.

Scotopic counterpart

1700  =  max⁡{ 1700∫V′ dμμ(R)  :  μ finite, μ(R)>0 }1700 \;=\; \max\left\{\, \frac{1700 \int V' \,\mathrm{d}\mu}{\mu(\mathbb{R})} \;:\; \mu \text{ finite}, \ \mu(\mathbb{R}) > 0 \,\right\}1700=max{μ(R)1700∫V′dμ:μ finite, μ(R)>0}

for a scotopic luminosity function V′V'V′ with V′(507)=1V'(507) = 1V′(507)=1.

Supporting statements

Φv≥0\Phi_v \ge 0Φv≥0; Φv≤Kmax⁡Φe\Phi_v \le K_{\max}\Phi_eΦv≤KmaxΦe; 0≤K≤Kmax⁡0 \le K \le K_{\max}0≤K≤Kmax; luminous efficiency in [0,1][0,1][0,1]; the point mass at the peak realizes K=Kmax⁡K = K_{\max}K=Kmax; the reduction of KKK to the integral formula for a spectrum with a density; invariance of KKK under rescaling the spectrum; Φv/P≤K\Phi_v / P \le KΦv/P≤K when Φe≤P\Phi_e \le PΦe≤P; and K=0K = 0K=0 for a source radiating only where VVV vanishes.

Significance

The ceiling is the reference point for the whole of lighting efficiency: quoted luminous efficiencies are efficacies divided by 683.002683.002683.002 lm/W, so "37%37\%37%" for a truncated 580058005800 K black body and "2%2\%2%" for a tungsten filament are statements about the distance to this bound. The supporting statements are the facts that make such comparisons well posed — that the efficacy depends only on the shape of the spectrum and not on the wattage, that the wall-plug efficacy of a device is never better than the efficacy of its radiation, and that power radiated outside the response band is pure loss.

Formalizing the material produces a small, reusable measure-theoretic layer for photometric and, more generally, for weighted-average quantities: a bounded weight integrated against a finite measure, normalized by the total mass, with the extreme value attained at a point mass. Nothing here is open mathematics; the value of the mission is a machine-checked model in which the definitions of the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary are stated once and the standard consequences are derived from them, rather than each being asserted in prose.

Difficulty

The mathematical content is elementary — the ceiling is the inequality ∫V dμ≤μ(R)\int V \,\mathrm{d}\mu \le \mu(\mathbb{R})∫Vdμ≤μ(R) for 0≤V≤10 \le V \le 10≤V≤1 — and the work is in the modelling. Three points need care.

First, attainment. On the space of L1L^1L1 densities the value 683.002683.002683.002 lm/W is a supremum that is never attained: for the actual CIE curve the set {V=1}\{V = 1\}{V=1} is a single point, hence Lebesgue-null, so a density supported there is zero almost everywhere and has no radiant flux at all. A formalization restricted to densities would either have to weaken the goal to a supremum or state an attainment claim that is vacuously true. Measures avoid this: the monochromatic source is the point mass δ555\delta_{555}δ555.

Second, division. Efficacy is a quotient, and the quotient of a real by zero is a junk value; every statement about KKK therefore carries the hypothesis Φe>0\Phi_e > 0Φe>0, which is also the physically meaningful one.

Third, integrability. The luminous flux is a Bochner integral, which returns 000 for a non-integrable integrand; the mission's hypotheses (VVV measurable and bounded, μ\muμ finite) are what rule this degeneracy out.

Formalization scope

The wavelength axis is all of R\mathbb{R}R, with Lebesgue measure where a density is used; no restriction to positive wavelengths or to a visible band is imposed, since the luminosity function already performs the restriction. A spectral radiant flux distribution is a finite Borel measure; the finiteness hypothesis is carried as a typeclass assumption and the positivity of the radiant flux as an explicit one. The luminosity function is assumed measurable with values in [0,1][0,1][0,1] and equal to 111 at its peak, and nothing more: no continuity, no unimodality, no tabulated values. The maximum spectral luminous efficacy appears as an explicit parameter Kmax⁡K_{\max}Kmax, so that the photopic constant 683.002683.002683.002 and the scotopic constant 170017001700 are instances of the same statements rather than separate developments. Units are not represented in the types: all quantities are plain real numbers, and lumens per watt appears only in the prose.

The goal is stated as "683.002683.002683.002 is the greatest element of the set of achievable efficacies", which rules out the two trivializing readings: a bare upper bound (true of any number above the ceiling) and an attainment claim over a class of spectra that is empty or null.

A complete development needs Mathlib's measure theory and Bochner integration only: finite measures, withDensity, Dirac measures, and monotonicity of the integral. The resulting definitions are reusable for any normalized weighted average of a finite measure, and contributions extending the model — mesopic weighting, black-body spectra and the efficacy figures computed from them, or the CIE curve as tabulated data — are welcome.

The Avogadro Constant: Amount of Substance, Molar Quantities and the Gram-to-Dalton RatioTextbook

Motivation

The Avogadro constant NAN_ANA is the conversion factor between an amount of substance and a number of elementary entities (atoms, molecules, ions, ion pairs). Since the 2019 revision of the SI it is a defining constant with the exact value NA=6.02214076×1023 mol−1N_A = 6.02214076\times10^{23}\ \mathrm{mol}^{-1}NA=6.02214076×1023 mol−1; the pure number N0=6.02214076×1023N_0 = 6.02214076\times10^{23}N0=6.02214076×1023 is called the Avogadro number. Before 2019 the mole was instead defined as the amount of substance in 12 grams of carbon-12, so N0N_0N0 was a measured quantity: the number of carbon-12 atoms in 12 g, equivalently the number of daltons in a gram, N0=g/DaN_0 = \mathrm{g}/\mathrm{Da}N0=g/Da. The two definitions agree to within the experimental uncertainty of the dalton, but no longer by fiat.

The relations that carry this content — n(X)=N(X)/NAn(X) = N(X)/N_An(X)=N(X)/NA, M(X)=m(X) NAM(X) = m(X)\,N_AM(X)=m(X)NA, Vm=v NAV_m = v\,N_AVm=vNA, na=1/NAn_a = 1/N_Ana=1/NA, and the crystal/unit-cell count used by the Avogadro Project's X-ray crystal density measurements on silicon-28 spheres — are stated in every chemistry course and used without further comment. They are elementary, but they are also exactly the kind of unit-bookkeeping that is easy to state loosely and easy to get wrong by a factor, and they have no machine-checked formulation.

Setting

Fix a common positive scale for masses, volumes and amounts, and record on it three units: a mass unit g\mathrm{g}g (gram), a second mass unit Da\mathrm{Da}Da (dalton), and an amount unit mol\mathrm{mol}mol (mole), each a strictly positive real number. Write

N0=6.02214076×1023,NA=N0mol.N_0 = 6.02214076\times10^{23}, \qquad N_A = \frac{N_0}{\mathrm{mol}} .N0=6.02214076×1023,NA=molN0.

For a sample containing NNN entities, its amount of substance is n=N/NAn = N/N_An=N/NA; for an entity of mass mmm, the molar mass is M=m NAM = m\,N_AM=mNA; for an entity occupying volume vvv, the molar volume is Vm=v NAV_m = v\,N_AVm=vNA; the elementary amount is na=1/NAn_a = 1/N_Ana=1/NA. For a crystal of volume VVV whose unit cell has volume vcell>0v_{\text{cell}} > 0vcell>0 and contains kkk entities, the number of entities in the crystal is k V/vcellk\,V/v_{\text{cell}}kV/vcell.

All of these are modelled as real numbers; units appear as positive real parameters rather than as a dimension system, so every statement below is an identity between real numbers that holds for every admissible choice of g\mathrm{g}g, Da\mathrm{Da}Da, mol\mathrm{mol}mol.

Formalization targets

Goal — the gram-to-dalton ratio

Under the pre-2019 definition of the mole, let mC>0m_{\mathrm{C}} > 0mC>0 be the mass of one carbon-12 atom, let NNN satisfy N mC=12 gN\,m_{\mathrm{C}} = 12\,\mathrm{g}NmC=12g (a mole of carbon-12 weighs 12 grams), and let the dalton be one twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, Da=mC/12\mathrm{Da} = m_{\mathrm{C}}/12Da=mC/12. Then

N=gDa.N = \frac{\mathrm{g}}{\mathrm{Da}} .N=Dag.

That is: the Avogadro number under the old definition is exactly the number of daltons in a gram. The goal fixes no numerical value — it asserts the shape of the relation, and so survives any revision of the measured value of the dalton.

Milestones

The six milestone lemmas are the remaining relations the source states: the inversion n(X) NA=N(X)n(X)\,N_A = N(X)n(X)NA=N(X); the 2019 statement M(X)⋅mol=N0 m(X)M(X)\cdot\mathrm{mol} = N_0\,m(X)M(X)⋅mol=N0m(X); the elementary-amount identity 1 mol=N0 na1\,\mathrm{mol} = N_0\,n_a1mol=N0na; the pre-2019 numerical coincidence that a particle of mass 12 Da12\,\mathrm{Da}12Da has molar mass exactly 12 g/mol12\,\mathrm{g}/\mathrm{mol}12g/mol when NA=(g/Da) mol−1N_A = (\mathrm{g}/\mathrm{Da})\,\mathrm{mol}^{-1}NA=(g/Da)mol−1; the worked numerical example that a water molecule occupies about 0.030 nm30.030\ \mathrm{nm}^30.030 nm3 when the molar volume of water is 18 mL/mol18\ \mathrm{mL}/\mathrm{mol}18 mL/mol; and the crystal/unit-cell amount relation.

Significance

The result itself is not new mathematics: each identity is one line of algebra once the model is fixed. What the mission produces is the model — a single, audited Lean formulation of amount of substance, molar mass, molar volume, the elementary amount, and the crystal count, in which the pre-2019 and post-2019 definitions of the mole can both be stated and compared, and in which the one place where the two definitions differ (the dalton is measured, the Avogadro number is fixed) is visible rather than hidden in a convention. That layer is reusable by any later formalization that needs to convert between microscopic and molar quantities, including the X-ray crystal density determination of NAN_ANA from silicon-28 lattice measurements.

Status honesty: everything stated here is standard, textbook-level content, and all seven statements have been checked to be provable in the model as formalized. The mission's value is the faithful encoding and the audited definition layer, not the difficulty of the proofs.

Difficulty

The proofs are elementary real algebra; the difficulty is entirely in the statements. Two traps recur. First, division in Lean is total, so an identity such as n=N/NAn = N/N_An=N/NA carries no information at NA=0N_A = 0NA=0 and can be satisfied vacuously; every statement here therefore either derives positivity from the unit data or takes the nondegeneracy hypothesis explicitly. Second, it is easy to write a unit relation that is true only for one choice of units — for instance, conflating the numerical value N0N_0N0 with the dimensional constant NA=N0/molN_A = N_0/\mathrm{mol}NA=N0/mol — and such a statement still compiles. Readers auditing this proposal should check each statement against both failure modes.

Formalization scope

Units are positive real parameters bundled in a structure carrying g,Da,mol\mathrm{g}, \mathrm{Da}, \mathrm{mol}g,Da,mol together with proofs of their positivity; there is no dimension-tracking type system. Amounts, masses, volumes and entity counts are real numbers (the crystal's entities-per-cell count is a natural number). The Avogadro number is the exact rational 602214076×1015602214076\times10^{15}602214076×1015, so the numerical milestone is a genuine rational-arithmetic bound, not a floating-point approximation. The water example is stated as a strict two-sided bound, 0.0298 nm3<v<0.0300 nm30.0298\ \mathrm{nm}^3 < v < 0.0300\ \mathrm{nm}^30.0298 nm3<v<0.0300 nm3, so that it cannot be satisfied by a rounded value.

A trivializing formalization is ruled out as follows: no statement is of the form "some quantity exists", every statement quantifies over an arbitrary admissible unit system, and the goal's hypotheses are simultaneously satisfiable (take g=1\mathrm{g} = 1g=1, mC=12/Nm_{\mathrm{C}} = 12/NmC=12/N for any N>0N > 0N>0), so the goal is not vacuous.

Contributions welcome: a dimension-typed refinement of the unit layer, and the X-ray crystal density relation NA=nM/(ρa3)N_A = n M/(\rho a^3)NA=nM/(ρa3) for a cubic lattice, which the source describes only qualitatively and which is deliberately not claimed here.

Planck's Law: Classical Limits and the Ultraviolet CatastropheTextbook

Motivation

A black body is an idealized body that absorbs all radiation falling on it and, when held at a fixed absolute temperature TTT, re-emits radiation whose spectrum depends on TTT alone. At the end of the nineteenth century two incompatible descriptions of that spectrum were on the table. Wien's distribution law (1896) fitted the measurements at short wavelengths and high temperatures but failed at long wavelengths. The formula Rayleigh obtained from classical equipartition, later the Rayleigh-Jeans law, reproduced the long-wavelength data and grew without bound at short wavelengths - the failure Ehrenfest named the ultraviolet catastrophe in 1911.

Planck's 1900 formula fits at every frequency. He reached it by refusing to treat the vibrational energy of the oscillators as a continuous quantity, writing it instead as an integer multiple of an energy element ε=hν\varepsilon = h\nuε=hν; the constant hhh entered physics as the proportionality factor in that hypothesis. Fitting black-body data, Planck obtained h≈6.55×10−34 J sh \approx 6.55\times10^{-34}\ \mathrm{J\,s}h≈6.55×10−34 Js, within about 1.2%1.2\%1.2% of the value h=6.626 070 15×10−34 J sh = 6.626\,070\,15\times10^{-34}\ \mathrm{J\,s}h=6.62607015×10−34 Js that today defines the SI.

What makes Planck's formula the successful one is not only that it fits the data. It contains both classical laws: it degenerates to Rayleigh-Jeans at low frequency and to Wien's law at high frequency, and unlike Rayleigh-Jeans it has a finite total emission. This mission formalizes those four statements - two limits and two integrability claims - about the spectral radiance function itself.

Setting

Fix three positive real parameters: the Planck constant hhh, the speed of light ccc, and the Boltzmann constant kBk_BkB. They are kept as variables rather than numerical constants, so every statement is a theorem about the functional form, valid in any system of units. Let T>0T > 0T>0 be an absolute temperature.

Per unit frequency ν\nuν, Planck's law gives the spectral radiance

Bν(ν,T)  =  2hν3/c2exp⁡ ⁣(hνkBT)−1,B_\nu(\nu, T) \;=\; \frac{2h\nu^3/c^2}{\exp\!\left(\dfrac{h\nu}{k_B T}\right) - 1},Bν(ν,T)=exp(kBThν)−12hν3/c2,

which is the function planckFreq of the already-published definition bundle BlackbodyRadiation_planck. That bundle also provides the dimensionless shape function

gn(x)  =  xnex−1,n∈N,g_n(x) \;=\; \frac{x^n}{e^x - 1}, \qquad n \in \mathbb{N},gn(x)=ex−1xn,n∈N,

in terms of which Bν(ν,T)=2kB3T3h2c2 g3 ⁣(hνkBT)B_\nu(\nu,T) = \dfrac{2k_B^3T^3}{h^2c^2}\, g_3\!\left(\dfrac{h\nu}{k_BT}\right)Bν(ν,T)=h2c22kB3T3g3(kBThν).

Two further functions are introduced by this mission. The Rayleigh-Jeans spectral radiance, the classical equipartition prediction,

BνRJ(ν,T)  =  2ν2kBTc2,B^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nu(\nu, T) \;=\; \frac{2\nu^2 k_B T}{c^2},BνRJ(ν,T)=c22ν2kBT,

and Wien's distribution law, the short-wavelength approximation,

BνW(ν,T)  =  2hν3c2 exp⁡ ⁣(−hνkBT).B^{\mathrm{W}}_\nu(\nu, T) \;=\; \frac{2h\nu^3}{c^2}\,\exp\!\left(-\frac{h\nu}{k_B T}\right).BνW(ν,T)=c22hν3exp(−kBThν).

Write x=hν/(kBT)x = h\nu/(k_B T)x=hν/(kBT) for the dimensionless frequency. All three radiances are positive on ν>0\nu > 0ν>0; the two comparisons below are stated as ratios, which is the precise form of "agrees with, in this regime".

Formalization targets

Goal

For all h,c,kB,T>0h, c, k_B, T > 0h,c,kB,T>0, all four of the following hold simultaneously:

lim⁡ν→0+Bν(ν,T)BνRJ(ν,T)=1,lim⁡ν→∞Bν(ν,T)BνW(ν,T)=1,\lim_{\nu \to 0^+} \frac{B_\nu(\nu,T)}{B^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nu(\nu,T)} = 1, \qquad \lim_{\nu \to \infty} \frac{B_\nu(\nu,T)}{B^{\mathrm{W}}_\nu(\nu,T)} = 1,ν→0+limBνRJ(ν,T)Bν(ν,T)=1,ν→∞limBνW(ν,T)Bν(ν,T)=1, Bν(⋅,T)∈L1((0,∞)),BνRJ(⋅,T)∉L1((0,∞)).B_\nu(\cdot,T) \in L^1\big((0,\infty)\big), \qquad B^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nu(\cdot,T) \notin L^1\big((0,\infty)\big).Bν(⋅,T)∈L1((0,∞)),BνRJ(⋅,T)∈/L1((0,∞)).

The goal asserts only the shape of the truth - ratios tending to 111 and membership or non-membership in L1L^1L1 - and fixes no constant, so it is not invalidated by any sharper rate or by the exact value of the total emission.

Milestones

The four conjuncts are milestones in their own right, together with the two shape-function limits that drive them:

lim⁡x→0+xex−1=1,lim⁡x→∞exex−1=1.\lim_{x \to 0^+} \frac{x}{e^x - 1} = 1, \qquad \lim_{x \to \infty} \frac{e^x}{e^x - 1} = 1 .x→0+limex−1x=1,x→∞limex−1ex=1.

Significance

The result itself. The two limits are the sense in which Planck's law reproduces Wien's law for short wavelengths and the empirical long-wavelength formula, which is the criterion Planck was working to when he introduced hhh; the non-integrability of BνRJB^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nuBνRJ is the ultraviolet catastrophe, stated exactly rather than as an asymptotic remark; and the integrability of BνB_\nuBν is what makes the total emitted power

  • the Stefan-Boltzmann law - a well-defined finite number in the first place. In Lean this last point is not cosmetic: the Bochner integral of a non-integrable function is defined and equal to 000, so an integral identity such as ∫0∞πBν dν=σT4\int_0^\infty \pi B_\nu \, d\nu = \sigma T^4∫0∞πBνdν=σT4 carries no information until integrability is known separately. This mission supplies that missing side condition for the Stefan-Boltzmann statements already on the platform (CODATA2022.blackbody_exitance_eq_stefanBoltzmann, CODATA2022.bose_einstein_integral_cube), both of which are Open.

Formalizing it. The physics has been settled for over a century; none of it is open mathematics. What is missing is machine-checked statements: the platform's existing black-body development (BlackbodyRadiation_planck, and the mission Planck's Law and Wien's Displacement Law) covers the peak of the spectrum and the exact radiation constants, but not the two classical regimes, and not integrability. The limit and integrability lemmas about xn/(ex−1)x^n/(e^x-1)xn/(ex−1) produced here are reusable for any later work on Bose-Einstein integrals, the Debye model, or the Stefan-Boltzmann constant.

Difficulty

The obvious argument for each limit is a one-line asymptotic expansion, and the obvious argument for integrability is "the integrand decays exponentially". Neither survives contact with a formal proof as stated. The ratio Bν/BνRJB_\nu/B^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nuBν/BνRJ equals x/(ex−1)x/(e^x-1)x/(ex−1) only after cancelling ν2\nu^2ν2, c2c^2c2 and 222, which requires those factors to be nonzero - so the algebraic reduction is valid on a punctured neighbourhood, and must be transported to the limit through a congruence-along-a-filter step rather than by rewriting the function globally. At ν=0\nu = 0ν=0 the ratio is a 0/00/00/0 junk value, which is exactly why the limit is taken within (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞).

For integrability the difficulty is at the two ends at once: near 000 the integrand is O(ν2)O(\nu^2)O(ν2) but the defining expression is a quotient whose denominator vanishes, and near ∞\infty∞ the exponential decay has to be turned into a dominating integrable function rather than a limit statement. Non-integrability of BνRJB^{\mathrm{RJ}}_\nuBνRJ must be derived from unboundedness of ∫0Rν2dν\int_0^R \nu^2 d\nu∫0Rν2dν, not asserted from the divergence of the integral, since an unproved-integrability integral in Lean silently evaluates to 000.

Formalization scope

Everything is over R\mathbb{R}R with the Lebesgue (volume) measure; L1L^1L1 membership is MeasureTheory.IntegrableOn ... (Set.Ioi 0) volume, which includes measurability. One-sided limits are filters: ν→0+\nu \to 0^+ν→0+ is the neighbourhood filter of 000 restricted to (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞), and ν→∞\nu\to\inftyν→∞ is Filter.atTop. The three physical parameters and the temperature are explicit real arguments, each carrying its own strict positivity hypothesis; no statement is quantified over a possibly empty set of parameters, and every hypothesis h,c,kB,T>0h,c,k_B,T>0h,c,kB,T>0 is satisfiable, so nothing here is vacuous.

The radiance functions are total: division by zero yields 000 in Lean, so Bν(0,T)=0B_\nu(0,T) = 0Bν(0,T)=0 and the comparison ratios are 0/0=00/0 = 00/0=0 at ν=0\nu = 0ν=0. That is harmless for the limits, which are taken strictly inside (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞), and it is why the integrability statements are on (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞) rather than on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞). The comparisons are deliberately stated as ratios tending to 111 rather than as differences tending to 000: the latter would be a weaker claim, and near ν=0\nu=0ν=0 it would be satisfied by functions that are not asymptotically equal.

Contributions welcome beyond the milestones: the corresponding statements in the wavelength parameterization, quantitative error bounds on the two approximations, and the integrability of gng_ngn on (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞) for general nnn, which would close the remaining gap in the Stefan-Boltzmann chain.

The Gravitational Constant: Newtonian Identities and Unit SystemsTextbook

Motivation

The gravitational constant GGG is the proportionality constant in Newton's law of universal gravitation and, through the Einstein gravitational constant κ=8πG/c4\kappa = 8\pi G/c^4κ=8πG/c4, in the Einstein field equations. It is the least precisely known of the fundamental constants: the CODATA-recommended value is G=6.674 30(15)×10−11 m3 kg−1 s−2G = 6.674\,30(15)\times 10^{-11}\ \mathrm{m^3\,kg^{-1}\,s^{-2}}G=6.67430(15)×10−11 m3kg−1s−2, a relative standard uncertainty of 2.2×10−52.2\times 10^{-5}2.2×10−5, and published high-precision measurements since the 1980s have at times been mutually exclusive. Everything that is known about GGG is known through a small number of algebraic identities that convert a measurable quantity - a surface acceleration, a mean density, an orbital period - into a value of GGG. Those identities, not the measurements, are what can be formalized, and they are what this mission collects.

The identities themselves are classical: the inverse-square law dates to Newton's Principia (1687), the notation GGG to C. V. Boys in the 1890s, and the first laboratory determination to the Cavendish experiment of 1798, which reported a mean Earth density of 5.448(33) g cm−35.448(33)\ \mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}}5.448(33) gcm−3 - equivalent to G=6.74(4)×10−11G = 6.74(4)\times 10^{-11}G=6.74(4)×10−11 in modern units, about 1%1\%1% above the modern value. The route from "mean density of the Earth" to "value of GGG" is exactly one of the identities below.

Setting

All quantities are real numbers; no dimensional type discipline is imposed, and units are handled explicitly where they matter (see Formalization scope).

For a gravitational constant GGG, point masses m1,m2m_1, m_2m1,m2 and a centre-to-centre distance rrr, the Newtonian force is

F(G,m1,m2,r)=G m1m2r2.F(G, m_1, m_2, r) = \frac{G\,m_1 m_2}{r^2}.F(G,m1,m2,r)=r2Gm1m2.

For a spherically symmetric body of mass MMM and radius RRR, the surface gravity ("small ggg", as opposed to "big GGG") is

g(G,M,R)=GMR2,g(G, M, R) = \frac{G M}{R^2},g(G,M,R)=R2GM,

the ball volume is V(r)=43πr3V(r) = \tfrac{4}{3}\pi r^3V(r)=34πr3, and the mean density is ρ(M,R)=M/V(R)\rho(M,R) = M / V(R)ρ(M,R)=M/V(R).

A circular orbit of radius rrr and period PPP about a mass MMM is the condition that the centripetal acceleration equals the gravitational acceleration:

r>0,P>0,(2πP)2r=GMr2.r > 0,\qquad P > 0,\qquad \left(\frac{2\pi}{P}\right)^2 r = \frac{G M}{r^2}.r>0,P>0,(P2π)2r=r2GM.

The Einstein gravitational constant is κ(G,c)=8πG/c4\kappa(G,c) = 8\pi G/c^4κ(G,c)=8πG/c4.

Formalization targets

Goal - GGG from an orbit

For G>0G > 0G>0, M>0M > 0M>0 and a circular orbit of radius rrr and period PPP about MMM,

G  =  3π V(r)P2M,V(r)=43πr3.G \;=\; \frac{3\pi\,V(r)}{P^2 M},\qquad V(r) = \tfrac{4}{3}\pi r^3.G=P2M3πV(r),V(r)=34πr3.

This is the article's statement that GGG is fixed by the period of an orbit and the volume it encloses. It is the weakest stable form of the orbital identity: no numerical value of GGG, no unit system, and no choice of body are hard-coded into it.

Supporting levels

The milestone list refines the goal into the chain the source uses: the "big GGG / small ggg" relation, its mean-density form (the Schiehallion-Cavendish route), P2=4π2r3/(GM)P^2 = 4\pi^2 r^3/(GM)P2=4π2r3/(GM), Kepler's third law for circular orbits, the grazing-satellite form P2=3π/(Gρ)P^2 = 3\pi/(G\rho)P2=3π/(Gρ), the relation to κ\kappaκ, and the SI ↔\leftrightarrow↔ cgs conversion of the recommended numerical value.

Significance

The result itself. The identities in this mission are the bridge between what an experiment measures and the number reported for GGG: the mean-density form is what turns the Schiehallion and Cavendish results into values of GGG; the orbital form is what makes the product GMGMGM (the standard gravitational parameter, known far more accurately than either factor) the quantity celestial mechanics actually uses; the κ\kappaκ relation is what carries the Newtonian constant into general relativity.

Formalizing it. No claim here is open mathematics - each target is a consequence of real-field algebra, and the mission's contribution is a single, faithful, reusable Lean vocabulary for elementary Newtonian gravitation (force, surface gravity, mean density, circular orbits) together with machine-checked statements of the identities the literature quotes informally. The mission is a formalization task, not a research task, and it is presented as such.

Difficulty

The mathematical content is elementary; the difficulty is entirely in faithfulness, and it has two specific sources.

First, division in Lean's real numbers is total: x/0=0x/0 = 0x/0=0. Several of these identities are therefore true but empty at degenerate arguments unless positivity hypotheses are stated, and conversely it is easy to over-hypothesize and end up proving a weaker claim than the source states. Each statement below fixes a particular choice, and that choice is the thing to audit.

Second, the SI/cgs target is a claim about units, which have no primitive representation here. It is stated in a model where each unit symbol is a real scale factor constrained by the relations between the systems; the honest reading of that target is "the two printed numerical values denote the same quantity given 1 m=100 cm1\ \mathrm{m} = 100\ \mathrm{cm}1 m=100 cm, 1 kg=1000 g1\ \mathrm{kg} = 1000\ \mathrm{g}1 kg=1000 g and 1 dyn=1 g cm s−21\ \mathrm{dyn} = 1\ \mathrm{g\,cm\,s^{-2}}1 dyn=1 gcms−2", and nothing stronger.

Formalization scope

Everything is over R\mathbb{R}R. The definition layer is a single definition item providing newtonForce, surfaceGravity, ballVolume, meanDensity, einsteinConstant, the predicate IsCircularOrbit, and the numerical constant gravitationalConstantSI =6.674 30×10−11= 6.674\,30\times 10^{-11}=6.67430×10−11; every theorem in the mission is phrased through those, so the definition layer is the part that must be audited first.

The orbit condition is stated as a predicate on (G,M,r,P)(G, M, r, P)(G,M,r,P) carrying r>0r>0r>0 and P>0P>0P>0, rather than as a derived function, so that no target is vacuous: for every G>0G>0G>0, M>0M>0M>0 and r>0r>0r>0 there is a PPP satisfying it, so the hypotheses of the orbital targets are satisfiable, and the targets are not true merely for want of instances. No target is stated as an existence claim that a witness construction could trivialize.

Units are modelled as real scale factors rather than by a dimensional type system; a solver who wants a genuinely dimension-typed treatment is welcome to contribute it as a separate development, but the target here is the scale-factor statement.

A complete development needs nothing beyond Mathlib's ordered-field and Real.pi API. The definition layer is intended to be reusable by any later mission on Newtonian gravitation, orbital mechanics, or unit conversion.

Speed of Light: c as an Invariant and Unattainable LimitTextbook

Motivation

The encyclopedic account of the speed of light makes two claims that look physical but whose content is mathematical. First, invariance: "the speed of light in vacuum is the same for all observers, no matter their relative velocity", so that light travels at ccc "regardless of the motion of the source or the inertial reference frame of the observer". Second, unattainability: ccc "is the upper limit for the speed at which information, matter, or energy can travel through space", and "particles with nonzero rest mass can be accelerated to approach ccc but can never reach it". The supporting apparatus quoted in the same source is likewise mathematical: the Lorentz factor γ\gammaγ, which "diverges to infinity as vvv approaches ccc"; the Lorentz interval, in which spatial and temporal differences "are combined with a negative sign"; and the kinetic energy (γ−1)mc2(\gamma-1)mc^2(γ−1)mc2, from which the source concludes that "it would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate an object with mass to the speed of light".

This mission isolates that mathematical core, in one spatial dimension, over the real numbers, and asks for machine-checked proofs of it. Nothing here depends on the numerical value c=299 792 458 m s−1c = 299\,792\,458\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}c=299792458 ms−1: every statement is proved for an arbitrary parameter c>0c > 0c>0, which is the sense in which the source's claims are structural rather than metrological.

Setting

Fix a real constant c>0c > 0c>0, the invariant speed. Work in one spatial dimension, with a spatial coordinate x∈Rx \in \mathbb{R}x∈R and a time coordinate t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}t∈R; speeds are real numbers, and a speed vvv is called subluminal when ∣v∣<c|v| < c∣v∣<c.

Four objects are used throughout, written in the prose exactly as in the mission's Lean development.

Relativistic velocity addition. For speeds u,vu, vu,v,

u⊕cv  =  u+v1+uvc2.u \oplus_c v \;=\; \frac{u+v}{1 + \dfrac{uv}{c^{2}}}.u⊕cv=1+c2uvu+v.

Lorentz factor. For a speed vvv,

γc(v)  =  11−v2c2.\gamma_c(v) \;=\; \frac{1}{\sqrt{1 - \dfrac{v^{2}}{c^{2}}}}.γc(v)=1−c2v21.

Lorentz interval and Lorentz boost. The interval of an event (x,t)(x,t)(x,t) is

Ic(x,t)  =  c2t2−x2,I_c(x,t) \;=\; c^{2}t^{2} - x^{2},Ic(x,t)=c2t2−x2,

and the boost of velocity vvv sends the event (x,t)(x,t)(x,t) to

Bc v(x,t)  =  (γc(v) (x−vt), γc(v) (t−vxc2)).B_c^{\,v}(x,t) \;=\; \Bigl(\gamma_c(v)\,(x - vt),\ \gamma_c(v)\,\bigl(t - \tfrac{vx}{c^{2}}\bigr)\Bigr).Bcv(x,t)=(γc(v)(x−vt), γc(v)(t−c2vx)).

Relativistic kinetic energy. For rest mass mmm and speed vvv,

Kc(m,v)  =  (γc(v)−1) m c2.K_c(m,v) \;=\; \bigl(\gamma_c(v) - 1\bigr)\,m\,c^{2}.Kc(m,v)=(γc(v)−1)mc2.

Formalization targets

Goal

For every c>0c > 0c>0 and every rest mass m>0m > 0m>0, all three of the following hold:

∀v, ∣v∣<c ⟹ c⊕cv=c;\forall v,\ |v| < c \ \Longrightarrow\ c \oplus_c v = c;∀v, ∣v∣<c ⟹ c⊕cv=c; ∀u,v, ∣u∣<c and ∣v∣<c ⟹ ∣u⊕cv∣<c;\forall u, v,\ |u| < c \ \text{and}\ |v| < c \ \Longrightarrow\ |u \oplus_c v| < c;∀u,v, ∣u∣<c and ∣v∣<c ⟹ ∣u⊕cv∣<c; ∀E∈R, ∃v, 0<v<c and E<Kc(m,v).\forall E \in \mathbb{R},\ \exists v,\ 0 < v < c \ \text{and}\ E < K_c(m,v).∀E∈R, ∃v, 0<v<c and E<Kc(m,v).

The three conjuncts are, in order, the invariance of light speed under a change of inertial frame, the fact that composing subluminal speeds never reaches ccc, and the unboundedness of the energy required to approach ccc. The goal deliberately asserts only the shape of the claims — no rate of divergence, no numerical constant — so it is not invalidated by any sharper quantitative statement a solver may prove separately.

Milestones

The milestone list decomposes the goal along the four notions above: interval preservation under a boost, invariance of ccc under composition, closure of the subluminal range under composition, divergence of γc\gamma_cγc at ccc, and unboundedness of kinetic energy below ccc.

Significance

The three conjuncts of the goal are what make ccc a limit rather than merely a large speed. Closure of {∣v∣<c}\{|v| < c\}{∣v∣<c} under ⊕c\oplus_c⊕c says that no finite chain of subluminal boosts produces a luminal speed; invariance says that the boundary of that range is fixed by every boost; the energy statement says that the boundary is not approached at finite cost. Interval preservation is the geometric statement behind them: a boost is an isometry of the quadratic form c2t2−x2c^2t^2 - x^2c2t2−x2, so the light cone c2t2=x2c^2t^2 = x^2c2t2=x2 is frame-independent.

These results are classical and have been standard since the 1905 formulation of special relativity; nothing in this mission is mathematically open. What the mission produces is the machine-checked version and a small reusable layer of one-dimensional relativistic kinematics: a search for declarations mentioning "Lorentz" in the Mathlib revision used for the drafting check returned none, so the definitions here are contributed rather than reused. The statements are stated for an arbitrary c>0c > 0c>0, so they can be reused at c=1c = 1c=1 (natural units) without restatement.

Difficulty

The algebraic milestones are short once the right nonvanishing facts are in hand, and the obvious first attempt — clear denominators and call a ring normalizer — fails on all of them for the same reason: the denominators 1+uv/c21 + uv/c^21+uv/c2, ccc, and 1−v2/c21 - v^2/c^21−v2/c2 must first be shown nonzero, and each of those facts needs the hypothesis ∣v∣<c|v| < c∣v∣<c, not merely c≠0c \neq 0c=0. For velocity addition the usable identities are

c(1+uvc2)±(u+v)=(c±u)(c±v)c,c\Bigl(1 + \tfrac{uv}{c^{2}}\Bigr) \pm (u+v) = \frac{(c \pm u)(c \pm v)}{c},c(1+c2uv)±(u+v)=c(c±u)(c±v),

whose positivity is where the strict inequality comes from.

The analytic milestone is the one that is not formal manipulation: γc\gamma_cγc must be shown to tend to +∞+\infty+∞ along the punctured left neighbourhood of ccc, which requires the inner expression to be shown positive, not merely convergent to 000, on a neighbourhood — the one-sided filter is essential, since γc\gamma_cγc takes a junk value beyond ccc (see below).

Formalization scope

All quantities are real; there is no vector or manifold structure, and spacetime is R2\mathbb{R}^2R2 presented as a pair of coordinates (x,t)(x,t)(x,t). The invariant speed ccc is a parameter with hypothesis c>0c > 0c>0; the numerical SI value is never used. The definitions are total functions, so two junk-value conventions are fixed and must be respected when reading the statements:

  • γc(v)\gamma_c(v)γc(v) uses the real square root, which is 000 on negative arguments; hence γc(v)=0\gamma_c(v) = 0γc(v)=0 whenever ∣v∣≥c|v| \ge c∣v∣≥c, rather than being undefined or infinite. Every statement about γc\gamma_cγc therefore carries an explicit subluminality or one-sided-limit hypothesis.
  • u⊕cvu \oplus_c vu⊕cv is a quotient, and division by zero yields 000; the hypotheses ∣u∣<c|u| < c∣u∣<c, ∣v∣<c|v| < c∣v∣<c are what exclude the vanishing denominator.

No statement in the mission is vacuous: each hypothesis set is satisfiable, e.g. by c=1c = 1c=1, u=v=1/2u = v = 1/2u=v=1/2, m=1m = 1m=1, and the goal quantifies over all c>0c > 0c>0 and all m>0m > 0m>0.

A complete development needs only Mathlib's real analysis: Real.sqrt, field-simplification and positivity reasoning, and one-sided neighbourhood filters for the divergence milestone. The definition layer (velocity addition, Lorentz factor, interval, boost, kinetic energy) is reusable beyond this mission — natural follow-ups, welcome as contributions, are the associativity and group structure of ⊕c\oplus_c⊕c, the rapidity parametrization v=ctanh⁡θv = c\tanh\thetav=ctanhθ, time dilation and length contraction, and the composition law for boosts.

Note on the read-backs attached to this proposal

The read-backs attached to the draft items of this proposal are not blind and not independent: they were written by the same agent that drafted the Lean statements, at the explicit instruction of the proposal owner, with full sight of the source material and of the intended meaning. They should be read as an author's restatement, not as independent testimony, and they do not provide the error-catching value of an independent audit.

Classical Dynamics I: Noether's TheoremTextbook

Motivation

Lagrangian mechanics is the standard reformulation of Newtonian dynamics used throughout physics: a mechanical system is described not by forces but by a single scalar function, the Lagrangian, and the equations of motion are the stationarity conditions of an integral of that function along a path. The organizing result of the theory is Noether's theorem: every continuous symmetry of the Lagrangian produces a quantity that is constant along every solution of the equations of motion. Conservation of momentum, of angular momentum, and of energy all arise this way, and the same statement — in field-theoretic form — underlies conservation laws in electrodynamics, general relativity, and the Standard Model.

This mission formalizes the Lagrangian chapter of David Tong's Classical Dynamics (University of Cambridge, Part II Mathematical Tripos), Section 2, in Lean 4. The finite-dimensional statement it targets is the one a physics student meets first, and it is the statement on which the field-theoretic versions are modelled.

Setting

The configuration space is Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn; a path is a map q:R→Rnq : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}^nq:R→Rn, written q(t)=(q1(t),…,qn(t))q(t) = (q_1(t), \dots, q_n(t))q(t)=(q1(t),…,qn(t)), and its velocity is the coordinatewise time derivative q˙i(t)\dot q_i(t)q˙i(t). A Lagrangian is a function

L:R×Rn×Rn→R,(t,q,v)↦L(t,q,v),L : \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}, \qquad (t, q, v) \mapsto L(t, q, v),L:R×Rn×Rn→R,(t,q,v)↦L(t,q,v),

smooth in all arguments; Tong writes it L(qi,q˙i,t)L(q_i, \dot q_i, t)L(qi,q˙i,t).

The action of a path over [t1,t2][t_1, t_2][t1,t2] is

S[q]=∫t1t2L(t,q(t),q˙(t)) dt.S[q] = \int_{t_1}^{t_2} L\big(t, q(t), \dot q(t)\big)\, dt .S[q]=∫t1t2L(t,q(t),q˙(t))dt.

A path is a motion (it solves Lagrange's equations, Tong eq. 2.43) when

ddt(∂L∂q˙i)=∂L∂qifor every i and every t,\frac{d}{dt}\left(\frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot q_i}\right) = \frac{\partial L}{\partial q_i} \qquad \text{for every } i \text{ and every } t,dtd(∂q˙i∂L)=∂qi∂Lfor every i and every t,

both partial derivatives being evaluated at (t,q(t),q˙(t))(t, q(t), \dot q(t))(t,q(t),q˙(t)). The quantity pi=∂L/∂q˙ip_i = \partial L/\partial \dot q_ipi=∂L/∂q˙i is the generalised momentum conjugate to qiq_iqi (eq. 2.44), and

H=∑jq˙j∂L∂q˙j−LH = \sum_j \dot q_j \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot q_j} - LH=j∑q˙j∂q˙j∂L−L

is the Hamiltonian (eq. 2.47). A function of time is a constant of the motion when it takes the same value at all times (eq. 2.46).

A one-parameter family of paths is a map Q:R×R→RnQ : \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}^nQ:R×R→Rn, (s,t)↦Q(s,t)(s, t) \mapsto Q(s, t)(s,t)↦Q(s,t), whose s=0s = 0s=0 member Q(0,⋅)Q(0, \cdot)Q(0,⋅) is the path under study. It is a continuous symmetry of LLL (eq. 2.52) when

∂∂sL(t,Q(s,t),Q˙(s,t))=0for all s,t,\frac{\partial}{\partial s} L\big(t, Q(s,t), \dot Q(s,t)\big) = 0 \qquad \text{for all } s, t,∂s∂L(t,Q(s,t),Q˙(s,t))=0for all s,t,

the dot denoting ∂/∂t\partial/\partial t∂/∂t.

Formalization targets

Goal — Noether's theorem (Tong, eqs. 2.51–2.54)

If QQQ is a continuous symmetry of LLL and the path Q(0,⋅)Q(0, \cdot)Q(0,⋅) solves Lagrange's equations, then

N(t)=∑i=1n∂L∂q˙i(t,Q(0,t),Q˙(0,t)) ∂Qi∂s(0,t)N(t) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{\partial L}{\partial \dot q_i}\Big(t, Q(0,t), \dot Q(0,t)\Big)\, \frac{\partial Q_i}{\partial s}(0, t)N(t)=i=1∑n∂q˙i∂L(t,Q(0,t),Q˙(0,t))∂s∂Qi(0,t)

takes the same value at every time ttt.

Significance

Noether's theorem is the statement that converts a structural property of a system — invariance under translations, rotations, or time shifts — into a number that does not change during the evolution. It is what licenses the use of conserved quantities as first integrals when solving mechanical problems, and it is the finite-dimensional prototype of the conservation laws that classify symmetries in field theory.

Formalizing it produces a small but reusable Lean development: a definition layer for Lagrangians and their partial derivatives on Rn\mathbb{R}^nRn, Lagrange's equations as a predicate on paths, the action functional, and the notion of a constant of the motion. Mathlib currently has the calculus these statements need — deriv, fderiv, ContDiff, interval integrals and differentiation under the integral sign — but no Lagrangian-mechanics layer built on top of it, so the definition layer of this mission is itself a contribution. The results here are classical and completely proved in the mathematical literature; what is missing is machine-checked proofs.

Difficulty

The physics derivations are three lines each, and all three lines are the ones that Lean does not grant for free. Tong's proof of Noether's theorem differentiates L(t,Q(s,t),Q˙(s,t))L(t, Q(s,t), \dot Q(s,t))L(t,Q(s,t),Q˙(s,t)) with respect to sss by the chain rule, exchanges ∂s\partial_s∂s with ∂t\partial_t∂t on QQQ, and then substitutes Lagrange's equations; in Lean, each of these steps requires the corresponding differentiability side conditions to be produced from the smoothness hypotheses, and the exchange of the two partial derivatives requires a symmetry-of-second-derivatives argument. The principle-of-least-action target additionally needs differentiation under the integral sign and the fundamental lemma of the calculus of variations (a continuous function integrating to zero against every smooth bump supported in (t1,t2)(t_1, t_2)(t1,t2) vanishes there), neither of which is available in the exact shape needed.

The naive route — defining everything through fderiv on the product space and hoping simp unfolds the chain rule — does not close these goals, because the partial derivatives are taken in single coordinate slots and must be reassembled into a total derivative along the path.

Formalization scope

Conventions fixed by the Lean development and worth knowing before starting:

  • The configuration space is Fin n → ℝ for a fixed n : ℕ, and time is all of ℝ; no interval restriction is imposed except in the action functional.
  • Partial derivatives are one-dimensional derivs taken in a single slot, using Function.update to vary one coordinate. Where a derivative fails to exist, deriv returns 0; the smoothness hypotheses on L, on paths, and on families are stated so that this junk value is never the content of a statement.
  • Lagrange's equations are stated with HasDerivAt, so they assert the existence of d/dt (∂L/∂q̇ᵢ) as well as its value.
  • "Constant of the motion" is ∀ t₁ t₂, F t₁ = F t₂, i.e. constancy on all of ℝ, not merely a vanishing derivative.
  • The symmetry hypothesis is Tong's: the s-derivative vanishes for all s and t, not only at s = 0.
  • The degenerate case n = 0 is included in every statement; there it is trivially true. It is not, however, a trivializing formalization of any target: for n ≥ 1 the hypotheses are satisfied by standard systems (a free particle, a particle in a central potential), so none of the statements is vacuous.

Contributions welcome: proofs of any supporting target, reusable lemmas relating the coordinate-slot derivs used here to fderiv on the product space, and worked instances (translation invariance giving momentum conservation, rotational invariance giving angular momentum) built on the same definition layer.

Density Functional Theory: The Hohenberg-Kohn TheoremsTextbook

Motivation

Density functional theory (DFT) is the computational method behind a large fraction of present-day electronic-structure calculations in condensed-matter physics, quantum chemistry and materials science. Its appeal is a drastic reduction in dimension: instead of an NNN-electron wavefunction Ψ(r1,…,rN)\Psi(r_1,\dots,r_N)Ψ(r1,…,rN) living on R3N\mathbb R^{3N}R3N, one works with the one-particle density ρ(r)\rho(r)ρ(r) on R3\mathbb R^{3}R3. That reduction is not a modelling approximation; it is licensed by two theorems of Hohenberg and Kohn (1964), for which Walter Kohn shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Every statement in this mission comes from the two Hohenberg–Kohn theorems and the identities the source text uses to set them up.

Timeline. The Thomas–Fermi model (1927) introduced density-only energy expressions but is known not to bind molecules (Teller, 1962). Hohenberg and Kohn (1964) proved that for non-degenerate ground states the external potential is fixed by the ground-state density, and that the exact energy functional is minimized at that density. Kohn and Sham (1965) turned this into a practical scheme by reproducing the density with non-interacting orbitals. Levy (1979) replaced the Hohenberg–Kohn functional, defined only on ground-state densities, by a constrained-search functional defined on all NNN-representable densities.

Setting

Fix an electron number. The objects are:

  • a set of admissible normalized wavefunctions Ψ\PsiΨ;
  • a set of external potentials vvv (in the physical model, multiplication by ∑iv(ri)\sum_i v(r_i)∑iv(ri));
  • a set of one-particle densities; the density of Ψ\PsiΨ is written ρΨ\rho_\PsiρΨ.

Two functionals act on these. The universal part F(Ψ)F(\Psi)F(Ψ) is the expectation value of the kinetic-energy and electron–electron-interaction operators, which do not depend on the system. The external part is the expectation value of the external potential, and the identity that makes DFT possible is that it depends on Ψ\PsiΨ only through its density:

⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩  =  ∫v(r) ρΨ(r) dr  =:  ext⁡(v,ρΨ).\langle \Psi \mid \textstyle\sum_i v(r_i) \mid \Psi\rangle \;=\; \int v(r)\,\rho_\Psi(r)\,dr \;=:\; \operatorname{ext}(v,\rho_\Psi).⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩=∫v(r)ρΨ(r)dr=:ext(v,ρΨ).

The total energy is Ev(Ψ)=F(Ψ)+ext⁡(v,ρΨ)E_v(\Psi) = F(\Psi) + \operatorname{ext}(v,\rho_\Psi)Ev(Ψ)=F(Ψ)+ext(v,ρΨ). A state Ψ\PsiΨ is a ground state of vvv when it minimizes EvE_vEv, and a nondegenerate ground state when it is the strict minimizer. A density is vvv-representable when it is the density of a nondegenerate ground state of some potential.

Formalization targets

Goal — the two Hohenberg–Kohn theorems

(1)∀ O, ∃ O: O(Ψ)=O(ρΨ)  for every nondegenerate ground state Ψ;\text{(1)}\quad \forall\,O,\ \exists\,\mathcal O:\ O(\Psi)=\mathcal O(\rho_\Psi) \ \text{ for every nondegenerate ground state } \Psi;(1)∀O, ∃O: O(Ψ)=O(ρΨ)  for every nondegenerate ground state Ψ; (2)F[ρ0]+ext⁡(v,ρ0)  ≤  F[ρ]+ext⁡(v,ρ)for every v-representable ρ,\text{(2)}\quad F[\rho_0]+\operatorname{ext}(v,\rho_0)\;\le\;F[\rho]+\operatorname{ext}(v,\rho) \quad\text{for every } v\text{-representable } \rho,(2)F[ρ0]+ext(v,ρ0)≤F[ρ]+ext(v,ρ)for every v-representable ρ,

with equality exactly when ρ=ρ0\rho=\rho_0ρ=ρ0, the ground-state density of vvv. Part (1) is the source's Corollary 1 — the density determines every ground-state property; part (2) is its Theorem 2.

Milestone level

The supporting statements are the density-determines-the-state half of Theorem 1, the potential-is-determined-up-to-a-constant half of Theorem 1, the well-definedness of the universal functional F[ρ]F[\rho]F[ρ], the variational principle, the Levy constrained-search identity, the identity ⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩=∫vρΨ\langle\Psi|\sum_i v(r_i)|\Psi\rangle=\int v\rho_\Psi⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩=∫vρΨ on L2(R3N)L^2(\mathbb R^{3N})L2(R3N), and the normalization ∫∑i∣φi∣2=N\int \sum_i |\varphi_i|^2 = N∫∑i∣φi∣2=N of a Kohn–Sham density built from orthonormal orbitals.

Significance

The Hohenberg–Kohn theorems are what justifies computing with ρ\rhoρ rather than Ψ\PsiΨ: without Theorem 1 the density would not carry enough information to determine the system, and without Theorem 2 there would be no variational principle to minimize. They are also the reason the exchange–correlation functional is a well-posed object of study: it is the unknown part of a functional that the theorems guarantee exists.

Formalizing them contributes a reusable variational core — ground states, universal functionals, vvv-representability, constrained search — plus two genuinely analytic statements about L2(R3N)L^2(\mathbb R^{3N})L2(R3N): the density-pairing identity for the external energy and the "a.e. nonvanishing eigenfunction forces the potential difference to be constant" lemma. The latter two are where the mathematical work lies, and both are stated here over the concrete configuration space (R3)N(\mathbb R^3)^N(R3)N, not in the abstract model.

Difficulty

The reductio that proves Theorem 1 is short, and it is short in Lean too. The difficulty of DFT as mathematics sits elsewhere, and this mission isolates it:

  • Going from "the two potentials share a ground state" to "they differ by a constant" requires knowing the ground state does not vanish on a set of positive measure — for Schrödinger operators this is unique continuation, and here it is placed in the hypotheses of the milestone that consumes it, not assumed away in the conclusion.
  • Turning ⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩\langle\Psi|\sum_i v(r_i)|\Psi\rangle⟨Ψ∣∑iv(ri)∣Ψ⟩ into ∫vρΨ\int v \rho_\Psi∫vρΨ is a Fubini argument over (R3)N(\mathbb R^3)^{N}(R3)N with one coordinate singled out, and needs the measure-preserving identification of (R3)N(\mathbb R^3)^{N}(R3)N with R3×(R3)N−1\mathbb R^3\times(\mathbb R^3)^{N-1}R3×(R3)N−1 together with integrability bookkeeping.
  • The constrained-search identity is an interchange of two infima where the inner one is over a fibre that may be empty, so the junk value of sInf has to be handled.

Formalization scope

The variational layer is stated over an abstract model carrying the data actually used by the Hohenberg–Kohn argument: wavefunctions, potentials, densities, a universal functional FFF, a density map, and an external-energy pairing. No Hilbert-space structure is assumed there, because the argument uses none; what it uses is that FFF does not depend on vvv and that the external energy sees Ψ\PsiΨ only through ρΨ\rho_\PsiρΨ. The two analytic milestones are stated concretely instead, on L2L^2L2 over (R3)N(\mathbb R^3)^{N}(R3)N, with ρΨ(r)=∑i∫∣Ψ(…,r,… )∣2\rho_\Psi(r)=\sum_i\int|\Psi(\dots,r,\dots)|^2ρΨ(r)=∑i∫∣Ψ(…,r,…)∣2.

Conventions fixed in Lean: energies are real; "nondegenerate ground state" means strict minimizer, so degenerate ground states are outside the scope of every statement that mentions it, exactly as in the source's caveat that the original theorems hold for non-degenerate ground states; vvv-representability quantifies over nondegenerate ground states only; the Hohenberg–Kohn functional takes the junk value 000 off the vvv-representable set, so statements about it always carry the representability hypothesis; the Levy functional is an sInf, which is 000 on an empty fibre.

The statements are not trivially satisfiable: the model has no hypothesis forcing the wavefunction set to be empty or the ground states to be unique, part (1) of the goal quantifies over every real-valued observable, and part (2) asserts an equality case, not merely an inequality. Contributions of the two analytic milestones are the most valuable: they need marginal-density machinery over product spaces that is reusable for any many-body formalization.

NRL Plasma Formulary I: Rothe–Hagen IdentityTextbook

Motivation

The NRL Plasma Formulary is a standard desk reference of the plasma-physics community: a compilation of the formulas, constants and unit conversions used in daily practice. Its opening section, "Numerical and Algebraic" (p. 3 of the 2013 edition), collects the few purely mathematical identities the rest of the handbook leans on. Two of them are exact summation formulas rather than approximations, and the first is the Rothe–Hagen identity, quoted there as valid "for all complex xxx, yyy, zzz except when singular" and attributed to H. W. Gould's work on binomial coefficient summations.

Unlike the handbook's numerical entries, this identity is a theorem with a precise hypothesis set, and it is exactly the kind of entry a reader takes on trust. It generalizes the Vandermonde convolution, it is the coefficient identity underlying the generalized binomial series, and it specializes to Abel's binomial theorem. Formalizing it turns one line of a reference handbook into a machine-checked statement and produces, as a by-product, a reusable Lean development of binomial coefficients with an arbitrary complex upper index.

Setting

For a complex number www and a natural number kkk, the generalized binomial coefficient is the falling factorial divided by a factorial,

(wk)  =  w(w−1)⋯(w−k+1)k!  =  1k!∏j=0k−1(w−j),\binom{w}{k} \;=\; \frac{w(w-1)\cdots(w-k+1)}{k!} \;=\; \frac{1}{k!}\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}(w-j),(kw)=k!w(w−1)⋯(w−k+1)=k!1j=0∏k−1(w−j),

with the empty-product convention (w0)=1\binom{w}{0} = 1(0w)=1. It is a polynomial in www of degree kkk, and it agrees with the usual binomial coefficient when www is a natural number.

Fix complex parameters xxx, yyy, zzz and, for k∈Nk \in \mathbb{N}k∈N, consider the Rothe factor

Ak(x,z)  =  xx+kz(x+kzk),A_k(x,z) \;=\; \frac{x}{x+kz}\binom{x+kz}{k},Ak(x,z)=x+kzx(kx+kz),

which is defined whenever x+kz≠0x + kz \neq 0x+kz=0. The factor x+kzx+kzx+kz in the denominator cancels against the leading factor of the falling factorial, so Ak(x,z)A_k(x,z)Ak(x,z) extends to a polynomial in xxx and zzz: A0(x,z)=1A_0(x,z) = 1A0(x,z)=1 and, for k≥1k \ge 1k≥1,

Ak(x,z)  =  x (x+kz−1)(x+kz−2)⋯(x+kz−k+1)k!.A_k(x,z) \;=\; \frac{x\,(x+kz-1)(x+kz-2)\cdots(x+kz-k+1)}{k!}.Ak(x,z)=k!x(x+kz−1)(x+kz−2)⋯(x+kz−k+1).

Both forms occur in the literature; the mission carries both and asks for the comparison between them, because the quotient form is the one printed in the handbook while the polynomial form is the one that carries no side condition.

Formalization targets

∑k=0nxx+kz(x+kzk)  yy+(n−k)z(y+(n−k)zn−k)  =  x+yx+y+nz(x+y+nzn).\sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{x}{x+kz}\binom{x+kz}{k}\;\frac{y}{y+(n-k)z}\binom{y+(n-k)z}{n-k} \;=\; \frac{x+y}{x+y+nz}\binom{x+y+nz}{n}.k=0∑nx+kzx(kx+kz)y+(n−k)zy(n−ky+(n−k)z)=x+y+nzx+y(nx+y+nz).

This is the handbook's line, with its "except when singular" proviso made explicit as the three non-vanishing hypotheses.

Stronger — the identity with no side condition

∑k=0nAk(x,z) An−k(y,z)  =  An(x+y,z),\sum_{k=0}^{n} A_k(x,z)\,A_{n-k}(y,z) \;=\; A_n(x+y,z),k=0∑nAk(x,z)An−k(y,z)=An(x+y,z),

in terms of the polynomial form AkA_kAk above. This version holds for all complex x,y,zx,y,zx,y,z, with no exceptional locus, and implies the printed form wherever the latter's denominators are non-zero.

Supporting targets

(w+1k+1)=(wk)+(wk+1),∑k=0n(xk)(yn−k)=(x+yn).\binom{w+1}{k+1} = \binom{w}{k} + \binom{w}{k+1}, \qquad \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{x}{k}\binom{y}{n-k} = \binom{x+y}{n}.(k+1w+1)=(kw)+(k+1w),k=0∑n(kx)(n−ky)=(nx+y).

The first is Pascal's rule for a complex upper index; the second is the Vandermonde convolution over C\mathbb{C}C, which is the case z=0z = 0z=0 of the goal.

Significance

The identity is the convolution law of the generalized binomial series: the formal power series Bz(t)\mathcal{B}_z(t)Bz(t) solving B=1+t Bz\mathcal{B} = 1 + t\,\mathcal{B}^{z}B=1+tBz satisfies Bz(t)x=∑n≥0An(x,z) tn\mathcal{B}_z(t)^x = \sum_{n \ge 0} A_n(x,z)\,t^nBz(t)x=∑n≥0An(x,z)tn, so the goal is the statement Bzx⋅Bzy=Bzx+y\mathcal{B}_z^x \cdot \mathcal{B}_z^y = \mathcal{B}_z^{x+y}Bzx⋅Bzy=Bzx+y read off coefficientwise (Graham–Knuth–Patashnik, Concrete Mathematics, §5.4). Consequences include Abel's binomial theorem, the Lagrange-inversion count of zzz-ary trees, and ballot-type identities in lattice-path enumeration.

Mathlib provides the Vandermonde convolution for natural-number arguments (Nat.add_choose_eq), the ascending and descending Pochhammer polynomials, and Ring.choose for binomial rings; it does not contain the Rothe–Hagen identity in any form. The four statements of this mission are therefore new formal content, and the complex-upper-index binomial API they force is reusable well beyond the mission.

The identity is classical and has been proved many times since Rothe (1793) and Hagen (1891), with the modern treatment in Gould's papers; nothing here is open mathematics. What is missing is a machine-checked proof.

Difficulty

The obvious attack — induction on nnn using Pascal's rule — does not close as stated: the summand Ak(x,z)A_k(x,z)Ak(x,z) is not Pascal-stable, since shifting xxx by 111 moves x+kzx+kzx+kz for every kkk at once, and the induction hypothesis is about a different family. The standard proofs instead treat both sides as polynomials in xxx and yyy for fixed zzz and nnn, verify the identity on an infinite set of points where a combinatorial reading is available, and conclude by the identity theorem for polynomials; or they extract coefficients from the generalized binomial series via Lagrange inversion. Either route needs infrastructure: a two-variable polynomial-identity argument over C\mathbb{C}C, or a formal-power-series compositional inverse.

A second, more prosaic difficulty is the singular locus. The printed identity divides by x+kzx+kzx+kz for every k≤nk \le nk≤n, and in Lean division by zero returns zero rather than failing, so a formalization that drops the non-vanishing hypotheses states a different — and in general false — claim.

Formalization scope

All statements are over C\mathbb{C}C. The generalized binomial coefficient is defined as an explicit product over Finset.range k divided by (k ! : ℂ), so (w0)=1\binom{w}{0} = 1(0w)=1 holds definitionally and no Nat.choose coercion enters. Sums run over Finset.range (n+1), with the complementary index written as the truncated natural subtraction n - k; inside that range this is the ordinary n−kn-kn−k, so the truncation convention is never exercised.

The proviso "except when singular" is formalized as three explicit hypotheses — x+kz≠0x+kz \ne 0x+kz=0 for all k≤nk \le nk≤n, y+kz≠0y+kz \ne 0y+kz=0 for all k≤nk \le nk≤n, and x+y+nz≠0x+y+nz \ne 0x+y+nz=0 — rather than by relying on Lean's junk value for division by zero. These hypotheses are satisfiable (for instance z=0z = 0z=0, x=y=1x = y = 1x=y=1), so the goal is not vacuous, and they constrain only denominators, so they do not trivialize the sum.

The singularity-free milestone commits to a total function rotheA defined by cases on kkk, with value 111 at k=0k = 0k=0; the comparison milestone pins that function to the quotient form under the non-vanishing hypothesis, so the mission cannot be satisfied by proving facts about a differently normalized object.

Contributions welcome beyond the milestones: complex-upper-index binomial API (symmetry, negation (−wk)=(−1)k(w+k−1k)\binom{-w}{k} = (-1)^k\binom{w+k-1}{k}(k−w)=(−1)k(kw+k−1), polynomiality in the upper index), and any formal-power-series development supporting Lagrange inversion.

Schrödinger Equation I: Energy Quantization in the One-Dimensional Infinite Potential WellTextbook

Motivation

The Schrödinger equation is the equation of motion of non-relativistic quantum mechanics: it determines how the state of an isolated quantum system evolves in time. Its time-independent form is an eigenvalue equation whose eigenvalues are the energies the system can have. The single most elementary illustration that this eigenvalue problem forces energies to be discrete is the particle in a one-dimensional box, also called the infinite potential well: a particle of mass mmm confined to an interval [0,L][0, L][0,L] by walls of infinite potential energy. It is the first worked example in essentially every introduction to quantum mechanics, and it is the model in which "quantization" can be derived in a few lines from a boundary-value problem for an ordinary differential equation.

This mission is the first in a series formalizing the mathematical content of the Schrödinger equation. It targets exactly the particle-in-a-box computation: that the admissible energies are En=n2π2ℏ2/(2mL2)E_n = n^2 \pi^2 \hbar^2 / (2 m L^2)En=n2π2ℏ2/(2mL2) for positive integers nnn, and nothing else.

Setting

Fix three positive real constants: the reduced Planck constant ℏ\hbarℏ, the mass mmm, and the width LLL of the box. A stationary state of energy E∈RE \in \mathbb{R}E∈R is a function ψ:R→C\psi : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}ψ:R→C such that

−ℏ22m ψ′′(x)  =  E ψ(x)for all x∈(0,L),-\frac{\hbar^2}{2m}\,\psi''(x) \;=\; E\,\psi(x) \qquad \text{for all } x \in (0, L),−2mℏ2ψ′′(x)=Eψ(x)for all x∈(0,L),

together with the regularity needed to state it — ψ\psiψ is continuous on [0,L][0, L][0,L] and twice differentiable at every interior point — and the Dirichlet boundary conditions imposed by the infinite walls,

ψ(0)=0,ψ(L)=0.\psi(0) = 0, \qquad \psi(L) = 0 .ψ(0)=0,ψ(L)=0.

Inside the box the potential vanishes, which is why only the kinetic term appears; outside the box the potential is infinite and the wave function is identically zero, which is what forces the two boundary values. A stationary state is non-trivial if ψ(x)≠0\psi(x) \neq 0ψ(x)=0 for at least one x∈(0,L)x \in (0, L)x∈(0,L); the trivial solution ψ≡0\psi \equiv 0ψ≡0 is excluded because a physical state must be normalizable to unit probability.

Write En:=n2π2ℏ2/(2mL2)E_n := n^2 \pi^2 \hbar^2 / (2 m L^2)En:=n2π2ℏ2/(2mL2) for n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}n∈N, and ψn(x):=sin⁡(nπx/L)\psi_n(x) := \sin(n \pi x / L)ψn(x):=sin(nπx/L) for the corresponding unnormalized eigenfunction.

Formalization targets

Goal — energy quantization

If ψ is a non-trivial stationary state of energy E, then ∃ n≥1 with E=n2π2ℏ22mL2.\text{If } \psi \text{ is a non-trivial stationary state of energy } E, \text{ then } \exists\, n \ge 1 \text{ with } E = \frac{n^2 \pi^2 \hbar^2}{2 m L^2}.If ψ is a non-trivial stationary state of energy E, then ∃n≥1 with E=2mL2n2π2ℏ2.

This is the weakest statement that carries the physical content: it fixes no eigenfunction, no normalization and no phase, only the set of admissible energies.

Supporting targets

E≤0  ⟹  ψ≡0 on [0,L],E \le 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \psi \equiv 0 \text{ on } [0, L],E≤0⟹ψ≡0 on [0,L], E>0  ⟹  ∃ C∈C,  ψ(x)=Csin⁡ ⁣(kx) on [0,L],k=2mEℏ,E > 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \exists\, C \in \mathbb{C},\; \psi(x) = C \sin\!\big(k x\big) \text{ on } [0, L], \quad k = \frac{\sqrt{2 m E}}{\hbar},E>0⟹∃C∈C,ψ(x)=Csin(kx) on [0,L],k=ℏ2mE, k>0,  L>0,  sin⁡(kL)=0  ⟹  ∃ n≥1,  kL=nπ,k > 0,\; L > 0,\; \sin(kL) = 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; \exists\, n \ge 1,\; kL = n\pi,k>0,L>0,sin(kL)=0⟹∃n≥1,kL=nπ, ψn is a non-trivial stationary state of energy En(n≥1),\psi_n \text{ is a non-trivial stationary state of energy } E_n \quad (n \ge 1),ψn is a non-trivial stationary state of energy En(n≥1), ∫0L∣ψn(x)∣2 dx=L2(n≥1).\int_0^L |\psi_n(x)|^2 \, dx = \frac{L}{2} \quad (n \ge 1).∫0L∣ψn(x)∣2dx=2L(n≥1).

The last two give the converse direction — every EnE_nEn really occurs — and the normalization constant 2/L\sqrt{2/L}2/L that turns ψn\psi_nψn into a unit vector of L2([0,L])L^2([0,L])L2([0,L]).

Significance

The result itself is the standard textbook derivation: confinement plus the time-independent Schrödinger equation yields a discrete spectrum, with a strictly positive ground-state energy E1=π2ℏ2/(2mL2)E_1 = \pi^2\hbar^2/(2mL^2)E1=π2ℏ2/(2mL2) (no state of zero energy exists) and level spacing growing like nnn. As a piece of mathematics it is the computation of the Dirichlet spectrum of the one-dimensional Laplacian on an interval, which is the model case for spectral theory on domains.

What the mission adds is a machine-checked version of both halves of that derivation, in a form that later missions in this series can import: a reusable predicate for "stationary state with Dirichlet boundary conditions", the classification of the solutions of ψ′′=−k2ψ\psi'' = -k^2\psiψ′′=−k2ψ with one boundary zero, and the quantization step. Mathlib contains the ordinary-differential-equation uniqueness results and the trigonometric API needed, but does not contain this boundary-value classification.

Difficulty

The physics derivation writes down the general solution ψ(x)=Aeikx+Be−ikx\psi(x) = A e^{ikx} + B e^{-ikx}ψ(x)=Aeikx+Be−ikx and is done. Formally, that step is the whole problem: one must prove that every twice-differentiable solution of ψ′′=−k2ψ\psi'' = -k^2 \psiψ′′=−k2ψ on an interval has this form, rather than assume it. The usual route is a uniqueness theorem for the associated first-order system applied to the difference of ψ\psiψ and an explicit sine solution, which requires converting the second-order scalar equation into a system and supplying a Lipschitz estimate. Two further traps: the sign case E≤0E \le 0E≤0 must be excluded separately (hyperbolic solutions with two zeros are identically zero), and the equation is assumed only on the open interval, so the values at the walls are reached by continuity rather than by evaluating the equation there.

Formalization scope

Wave functions are complex-valued functions of a real variable, ψ:R→C\psi : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}ψ:R→C; energies, ℏ\hbarℏ, mmm, LLL are real. Derivatives are the ordinary derivative of a complex-valued function of a real variable, the second derivative being the derivative of the derivative. The equation is imposed pointwise on the open interval (0,L)(0, L)(0,L) only, with continuity on the closed interval [0,L][0, L][0,L] and differentiability at interior points; nothing is assumed about ψ\psiψ outside [0,L][0, L][0,L], so the junk values of the derivative outside the box never enter a statement. The constants ℏ,m,L\hbar, m, Lℏ,m,L are hypothesized strictly positive, so no division by zero occurs in EnE_nEn.

The goal is not vacuous: the supporting target exhibiting ψn\psi_nψn shows that its hypotheses are satisfiable for every n≥1n \ge 1n≥1, so the mission cannot be closed by proving that no non-trivial stationary state exists. Conversely the non-triviality hypothesis cannot be dropped: ψ≡0\psi \equiv 0ψ≡0 solves the boundary value problem for every real EEE.

Contributions welcome: the ODE classification lemma (solutions of ψ′′=−k2ψ\psi'' = -k^2\psiψ′′=−k2ψ on an interval), orthogonality of the ψn\psi_nψn in L2([0,L])L^2([0,L])L2([0,L]), and the finite-well and harmonic-oscillator analogues, which are planned as later missions in this series.

Nuclear Shell Model I: Harmonic-Oscillator Magic NumbersTextbook

Motivation

A nucleus whose proton number or neutron number equals one of 2,8,20,28,50,82,1262, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 1262,8,20,28,50,82,126 — the magic numbers — is markedly more tightly bound than the semi-empirical mass formula predicts, and markedly more stable against decay. The empirical evidence for closed nuclear shells at 505050 and 828282 protons and at 50,82,12650, 82, 12650,82,126 neutrons was assembled by Maria Goeppert Mayer in 1948 (Phys. Rev. 74, 235), and explained in 1949 by adding spin–orbit coupling to the shell picture (Phys. Rev. 75, 1969); the shell model that grew out of this work earned Goeppert Mayer and Hans Jensen a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics.

The textbook first step toward these numbers is purely combinatorial: approximate the nuclear force by an isotropic three-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, count the degenerate states at each energy level, double the count for spin, and accumulate. This mission formalizes exactly that step — including its well-known failure — from the Derivation section of the Wikipedia article Magic number (physics).

Setting

For the isotropic three-dimensional harmonic oscillator the energy depends only on the sum n=nx+ny+nzn = n_x + n_y + n_zn=nx+ny+nz of the three quantum numbers, so the states at level nnn are the triples of nonnegative integers summing to nnn — the weak 333-compositions of nnn. Write

Ln  =  {(nx,ny,nz)∈N3  :  nx+ny+nz=n}.L_n \;=\; \{(n_x,n_y,n_z)\in\mathbb{N}^3 \;:\; n_x+n_y+n_z=n\}.Ln={(nx,ny,nz)∈N3:nx+ny+nz=n}.

Each state accommodates two nucleons of the same kind (two spin orientations), so the shell at level nnn holds

Cn  =  2 ∣Ln∣C_n \;=\; 2\,|L_n|Cn=2∣Ln∣

nucleons, and filling every shell of level below NNN takes

SN  =  ∑n<NCnS_N \;=\; \sum_{n<N} C_nSN=n<N∑Cn

nucleons. A shell closure — hence a predicted magic number — is a value SNS_NSN. Finally, M={2,8,20,28,50,82,126}M = \{2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126\}M={2,8,20,28,50,82,126} denotes the seven most widely recognized magic numbers.

Target

The mission's goal collects the content of the derivation:

∣Ln∣  =  (n+22),SN  =  2(N+23)  =  N(N+1)(N+2)3,|L_n| \;=\; \binom{n+2}{2}, \qquad S_N \;=\; 2\binom{N+2}{3} \;=\; \frac{N(N+1)(N+2)}{3},∣Ln∣=(2n+2),SN=2(3N+2)=3N(N+1)(N+2), (S1,S2,S3,S4)  =  (2, 8, 20, 40),(S_1,S_2,S_3,S_4) \;=\; (2,\,8,\,20,\,40),(S1,S2,S3,S4)=(2,8,20,40),

together with the comparison against MMM: the values 2,8,202, 8, 202,8,20 lie in MMM; the magic number 28∈M28 \in M28∈M is never of the form SNS_NSN; and 40=S440 = S_440=S4 is produced by the count although 40∉M40 \notin M40∈/M.

Significance

The positive half of the statement explains three of the seven magic numbers from nothing but degeneracy counting: 222, 888 and 202020 are exactly the first three oscillator shell closures. The negative half is the reason the shell model needs more physics: the oscillator count misses 282828 altogether and predicts 404040, which is not magic. Historically this gap is what spin–orbit coupling was introduced to close, and it is the precise sense in which "the correct formula for predicted magic numbers fundamentally relies on spin-orbit coupling".

As a formalization target the mission is small and self-contained: it fixes a reusable Lean model of oscillator shell filling (levels, degeneracies, spin doubling, cumulative capacity) and the stars-and-bars count behind it, against which later, more physical refinements — spin–orbit corrections, the empirical magic-number list — can be stated.

Difficulty

The mathematics is elementary; the work is in the counting and in the negative claims. The degeneracy ∣Ln∣=(n+22)|L_n| = \binom{n+2}{2}∣Ln∣=(2n+2) is stars and bars for three boxes, most directly obtained by fibering LnL_nLn over the first coordinate and summing ∑x≤n(n−x+1)\sum_{x\le n}(n-x+1)∑x≤n(n−x+1). Asserting that no NNN gives SN=28S_N = 28SN=28 is not a finite check: it needs the closed form together with monotonicity of N↦(N+23)N \mapsto \binom{N+2}{3}N↦(3N+2) to rule out every NNN above the range where SNS_NSN is computed, since S3=20<28<40=S4S_3 = 20 < 28 < 40 = S_4S3=20<28<40=S4.

Formalization scope

Everything is over N\mathbb{N}N and finite. The level set LnL_nLn is a Finset (ℕ × ℕ × ℕ) cut out of the box [0,n]3[0,n]^3[0,n]3 by the equation nx+ny+nz=nn_x + n_y + n_z = nnx+ny+nz=n, so its elements are ordered triples: permutations of the same multiset are distinct states, as the physics requires. Spin enters only as the literal factor 222 in CnC_nCn, not as an extra coordinate. The cumulative count SNS_NSN runs over levels n<Nn < Nn<N, so S0=0S_0 = 0S0=0 and S1=2S_1 = 2S1=2; the NNN-th predicted magic number is SNS_NSN, not SN−1S_{N-1}SN−1. Binomial coefficients are Nat.choose, and the closed forms are stated in the division-free shape 2(N+23)2\binom{N+2}{3}2(3N+2) to avoid truncated natural-number division. The set MMM of magic numbers is a hard-coded Finset ℕ transcribing the seven numbers listed by the source — it is a datum, not a derived object, and no claim in this mission asserts anything about nuclear stability itself.

The statements about 282828 and 404040 are what keep the mission from being a pure identity check: ∀N, SN≠28\forall N,\ S_N \neq 28∀N, SN=28 quantifies over all NNN, and 40∉M40 \notin M40∈/M is a membership fact about the transcribed list.

Einstein's Static Universe: the Λ\LambdaΛ Balance and Its InstabilityTextbook

Motivation

The cosmological constant Λ\LambdaΛ entered physics in 1917, when Einstein added a term Λgμν\Lambda g_{\mu\nu}Λgμν to his field equations in order to allow a spatially homogeneous universe that neither expands nor contracts (Einstein, Kosmologische Betrachtungen zur allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, 1917). The resulting Einstein static universe is the unique balance in which the attraction of pressureless matter, the repulsion carried by Λ\LambdaΛ, and a positive spatial curvature cancel exactly. Two facts about that balance shaped the next century of cosmology:

  1. it is possible only for one specific relation between Λ\LambdaΛ, the matter density and the curvature, so the static model is fine-tuned by construction;
  2. it is unstable: an arbitrarily small increase of the scale factor grows, and an arbitrarily small decrease collapses.

After Hubble's 1929 observations Einstein dropped the term; it returned in 1998, when the supernova measurements of the Supernova Cosmology Project and the High-zzz Supernova Search Team required Λ>0\Lambda>0Λ>0. Interpreting Λ\LambdaΛ as a vacuum energy density ρvac=Λ/(8πG)\rho_{\text{vac}}=\Lambda/(8\pi G)ρvac=Λ/(8πG) with equation of state w=−1w=-1w=−1 then produced the cosmological constant problem: the measured value, about 10−52 m−210^{-52}\,\mathrm{m}^{-2}10−52m−2, is roughly 10−12210^{-122}10−122 in Planck units, tens of orders of magnitude below the scale that effective quantum field theory suggests (Wikipedia, Cosmological constant problem).

This mission formalizes the classical ordinary-differential-equation content of that story: the static solution, its uniqueness, its instability, the vacuum-energy reading of Λ\LambdaΛ, the density-parameter bookkeeping, and the numerical size of the discrepancy.

Setting

A homogeneous isotropic universe is described by a positive scale factor a:I→Ra:I\to\mathbb{R}a:I→R on a set of times I⊆RI\subseteq\mathbb{R}I⊆R. Matter is pressureless dust, whose density dilutes with volume,

ρ(a)=ρ0(a0a)3,\rho(a)=\rho_0\left(\frac{a_0}{a}\right)^{3},ρ(a)=ρ0(aa0)3,

where ρ0>0\rho_0>0ρ0>0 and a0>0a_0>0a0>0 are reference values. Units are geometrized, c=1c=1c=1, so Λ\LambdaΛ has dimension (length)−2^{-2}−2; G>0G>0G>0 is Newton's constant and k∈Rk\in\mathbb{R}k∈R the curvature constant.

The dynamics are the two Friedmann equations. The first Friedmann equation is the constraint

a˙(t)2=8πG3 ρ(a(t)) a(t)2−k+Λ3a(t)2,t∈I,\dot a(t)^2=\frac{8\pi G}{3}\,\rho\big(a(t)\big)\,a(t)^2-k+\frac{\Lambda}{3}a(t)^2 ,\qquad t\in I,a˙(t)2=38πGρ(a(t))a(t)2−k+3Λa(t)2,t∈I,

and the acceleration equation for dust is

a¨(t)=F(a(t)),F(x):=−4πG3 ρ(x) x+Λ3x=−4πG3ρ0a03x2+Λ3x.\ddot a(t)=F\big(a(t)\big),\qquad F(x):=-\frac{4\pi G}{3}\,\rho(x)\,x+\frac{\Lambda}{3}x=-\frac{4\pi G}{3}\frac{\rho_0a_0^3}{x^{2}}+\frac{\Lambda}{3}x .a¨(t)=F(a(t)),F(x):=−34πGρ(x)x+3Λx=−34πGx2ρ0a03+3Λx.

The Hubble parameter is H=a˙/aH=\dot a/aH=a˙/a, the critical density is ρc=3H2/(8πG)\rho_c=3H^2/(8\pi G)ρc=3H2/(8πG), and the density parameters are

Ωm=ρρc,ΩΛ=Λ3H2,Ωk=−ka2H2.\Omega_m=\frac{\rho}{\rho_c},\qquad \Omega_\Lambda=\frac{\Lambda}{3H^2},\qquad \Omega_k=-\frac{k}{a^2H^2}.Ωm=ρcρ,ΩΛ=3H2Λ,Ωk=−a2H2k.

Formalization targets

Goal — the static universe exists for exactly one balance, and it is unstable

For G,ρ0,a0,aE>0G,\rho_0,a_0,a_E>0G,ρ0,a0,aE>0, the constant function a≡aEa\equiv a_Ea≡aE satisfies both Friedmann equations if and only if

Λ=4πG ρ(aE)andk=ΛaE2,\Lambda=4\pi G\,\rho(a_E)\qquad\text{and}\qquad k=\Lambda a_E^{2},Λ=4πGρ(aE)andk=ΛaE2,

in which case Λ>0\Lambda>0Λ>0, F(aE)=0F(a_E)=0F(aE)=0, F′(aE)=Λ>0F'(a_E)=\Lambda>0F′(aE)=Λ>0, and the equilibrium is unstable in the following exact sense: every solution of a¨=F(a)\ddot a=F(a)a¨=F(a) on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞) with a(0)>aEa(0)>a_Ea(0)>aE and a˙(0)≥0\dot a(0)\ge 0a˙(0)≥0 is strictly increasing and satisfies a(t)→∞a(t)\to\inftya(t)→∞; and every positive solution on [0,T][0,T][0,T] with a(0)<aEa(0)<a_Ea(0)<aE and a˙(0)≤0\dot a(0)\le 0a˙(0)≤0 is strictly decreasing.

Supporting targets

Λ\LambdaΛ is exactly a perfect fluid of constant density ρvac=Λ/(8πG)\rho_{\text{vac}}=\Lambda/(8\pi G)ρvac=Λ/(8πG) and pressure pvac=−ρvacp_{\text{vac}}=-\rho_{\text{vac}}pvac=−ρvac; the density parameters satisfy Ωm+Ωk+ΩΛ=1\Omega_m+\Omega_k+\Omega_\Lambda=1Ωm+Ωk+ΩΛ=1; the acceleration equation is a consequence of the first Friedmann equation along a solution with a˙≠0\dot a\ne0a˙=0; and the observed Λ\LambdaΛ is smaller than 10−12010^{-120}10−120 in Planck units.

Significance

The static solution is the historical origin of Λ\LambdaΛ, and its instability is the reason the static model was never a viable cosmology even before the expansion was observed: the balance point is a local maximum of the effective potential, not a minimum, so the equilibrium cannot be maintained. The same function FFF and the same linearization δ¨=Λ δ\ddot\delta=\Lambda\,\deltaδ¨=Λδ govern the late-time behaviour of the standard Λ\LambdaΛCDM model, where the growing mode becomes the de Sitter expansion eΛ/3 te^{\sqrt{\Lambda/3}\,t}eΛ/3t.

What the mission produces on top of the textbook statements: a machine-checked ODE treatment of a dust-plus-Λ\LambdaΛ cosmology that does not stop at the linearized equation. The classical physics argument computes F′(aE)=ΛF'(a_E)=\LambdaF′(aE)=Λ and calls the equilibrium unstable; the formal statements here ask for the nonlinear conclusion — monotone escape to infinity on one side and strict collapse on the other — which is what "unstable" has to mean for the exact equations. Mathlib contains neither the Friedmann equations nor a general instability criterion for second-order autonomous scalar ODEs, so both have to be built here.

Difficulty

The linearized step is routine calculus. The nonlinear instability is not: from a¨=F(a)\ddot a=F(a)a¨=F(a) with F(aE)=0F(a_E)=0F(aE)=0 and FFF strictly increasing on (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞), one must run a bootstrapping argument in which the sign of a¨\ddot aa¨ controls a˙\dot aa˙, which in turn controls whether aaa stays in the region where the sign of a¨\ddot aa¨ was known. The obvious approach — solve the ODE explicitly — is not available: the dust-plus-Λ\LambdaΛ equation with the static value of kkk has no elementary closed-form solution through the static point, and the first Friedmann equation, which is the conserved energy of the second, degenerates exactly at a=aEa=a_Ea=aE, where a˙=0\dot a=0a˙=0. Divergence a(t)→∞a(t)\to\inftya(t)→∞ additionally requires ruling out that a˙\dot aa˙ stalls, i.e. a quantitative lower bound on a˙\dot aa˙ once the solution has left a neighbourhood of aEa_EaE.

Formalization scope

Everything is stated for real-valued functions a:R→Ra:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}a:R→R of a real time variable; derivatives are the usual derivative of a real function, and each equation is asserted pointwise on an explicit set of times (R\mathbb{R}R, [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞), [0,T][0,T][0,T], or a general open set), never globally by fiat. Dust density, the Friedmann equations, the acceleration function FFF, the Hubble parameter, the critical density and the three density parameters are all fixed in one definition file shared by every statement, so all items commit to the same conventions: c=1c=1c=1, curvature entering as −k-k−k in the equation for a˙2\dot a^2a˙2, and ρ0,a0\rho_0,a_0ρ0,a0 as fixed reference constants rather than the value of the density at a particular time.

Two trivializing readings are ruled out explicitly. First, the contracting-side statement is posed on a bounded interval [0,T][0,T][0,T] with positivity of aaa assumed there, because a collapsing solution reaches a=0a=0a=0 in finite time; posing it on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞) would make its hypotheses unsatisfiable and the statement vacuous. Second, the escape statement asks for a(t)→∞a(t)\to\inftya(t)→∞, not merely a˙≥0\dot a\ge0a˙≥0, so it cannot be satisfied by a solution that converges to a finite limit.

Useful contributions beyond the listed items: a reusable instability criterion for x¨=F(x)\ddot x=F(x)x¨=F(x) at a zero of FFF with F′>0F'>0F′>0, and the corresponding stability criterion, both of which are independent of cosmology.

Quantum Electrodynamics I: Classical Field Equations of the QED ActionTextbook

Motivation

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is the relativistic quantum field theory of electrodynamics: it describes how light and charged matter interact, and it is the most precisely tested theory in physics, reproducing quantities such as the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron and the Lamb shift of hydrogen to many digits. Its modern covariant formulation was developed by Tomonaga, Schwinger and Feynman, with Dyson showing the equivalence of the operator and diagrammatic approaches.

Every one of those computations starts from a single classical object: the QED action, a functional of a Dirac spinor field and an electromagnetic four-potential on Minkowski space. Perturbation theory, Feynman rules, renormalization and the S-matrix are all built on top of the classical Lagrangian and the structural facts about it — the Clifford algebra of the Dirac matrices, the U(1)U(1)U(1) gauge symmetry, the conserved Noether current, and the Euler–Lagrange field equations. This mission formalizes exactly that classical layer, in the notation of the "Mathematical formulation" section of the Wikipedia article on quantum electrodynamics.

Nothing quantized is attempted here: no Fock space, no Dyson series, no renormalization. Those require a separate infrastructure and, in the interacting case, are not covered by any complete rigorous construction in four spacetime dimensions. What is formalizable today, and what this mission asks for, is the classical field theory that the quantum theory quantizes.

Setting

Spacetime is R4\mathbb{R}^4R4 with coordinates x=(x0,x1,x2,x3)x = (x^0, x^1, x^2, x^3)x=(x0,x1,x2,x3) and the Minkowski metric η\etaη of signature (+,−,−,−)(+,-,-,-)(+,−,−,−): η00=1\eta_{00} = 1η00=1, η11=η22=η33=−1\eta_{11} = \eta_{22} = \eta_{33} = -1η11=η22=η33=−1, and ημν=0\eta_{\mu\nu} = 0ημν=0 for μ≠ν\mu \ne \nuμ=ν. Since η\etaη is its own inverse, the same array serves as the contravariant metric ημν\eta^{\mu\nu}ημν used to raise indices. The symbol ∂μ\partial_\mu∂μ denotes the partial derivative in the μ\muμ-th coordinate direction, and □=ημν∂μ∂ν\Box = \eta^{\mu\nu}\partial_\mu\partial_\nu□=ημν∂μ∂ν is the wave operator.

The Dirac matrices are four complex 4×44\times44×4 matrices γ0,…,γ3\gamma^0,\dots,\gamma^3γ0,…,γ3 subject to the Clifford relation

γμγν+γνγμ=2ημνI4\gamma^\mu\gamma^\nu + \gamma^\nu\gamma^\mu = 2\eta^{\mu\nu} I_4γμγν+γνγμ=2ημνI4

together with the hermiticity relation (γμ)†=γ0γμγ0(\gamma^\mu)^\dagger = \gamma^0\gamma^\mu\gamma^0(γμ)†=γ0γμγ0, which makes γ0\gamma^0γ0 hermitian and γ1,γ2,γ3\gamma^1,\gamma^2,\gamma^3γ1,γ2,γ3 anti-hermitian. The standard Dirac basis is one concrete solution of these relations.

A spinor field is a map ψ:R4→C4\psi : \mathbb{R}^4 \to \mathbb{C}^4ψ:R4→C4; its Dirac adjoint is ψˉ=ψ†γ0\bar\psi = \psi^\dagger\gamma^0ψˉ=ψ†γ0, and for a 4×44\times44×4 matrix MMM the pairing ψˉMχ\bar\psi M \chiψˉMχ is the complex number ∑i,jψi‾ (γ0M)ij χj\sum_{i,j}\overline{\psi_i}\,(\gamma^0 M)_{ij}\,\chi_j∑i,jψi(γ0M)ijχj. A gauge field is a map A:R4→R4A : \mathbb{R}^4 \to \mathbb{R}^4A:R4→R4 whose value Aμ(x)A_\mu(x)Aμ(x) is the covariant component of the electromagnetic four-potential. From it one forms the field tensor (the curvature of the gauge connection)

Fμν=∂μAν−∂νAμ,Fμν=ημαηνβFαβ,F_{\mu\nu} = \partial_\mu A_\nu - \partial_\nu A_\mu, \qquad F^{\mu\nu} = \eta^{\mu\alpha}\eta^{\nu\beta}F_{\alpha\beta},Fμν=∂μAν−∂νAμ,Fμν=ημαηνβFαβ,

and, for a coupling constant eee, the gauge covariant derivative Dμψ=∂μψ+ieAμψD_\mu\psi = \partial_\mu\psi + ieA_\mu\psiDμψ=∂μψ+ieAμψ. The Dirac current is Jμ=ψˉγμψJ^\mu = \bar\psi\gamma^\mu\psiJμ=ψˉγμψ.

With mmm the mass of the spinor field, the QED Lagrangian density is

L=ψˉ (iγμDμ−m) ψ−14FμνFμν.\mathcal{L} = \bar\psi\,(i\gamma^\mu D_\mu - m)\,\psi - \tfrac{1}{4}F_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}.L=ψˉ(iγμDμ−m)ψ−41FμνFμν.

Its Euler–Lagrange equations are the Dirac equation (iγμDμ−m)ψ=0(i\gamma^\mu D_\mu - m)\psi = 0(iγμDμ−m)ψ=0 and the Maxwell equation ∂μFμν=eJν\partial_\mu F^{\mu\nu} = e J^\nu∂μFμν=eJν. The Lorenz gauge condition is ημν∂μAν=0\eta^{\mu\nu}\partial_\mu A_\nu = 0ημν∂μAν=0.

Formalization targets

Goal

For a coupled solution (ψ,A)(\psi, A)(ψ,A) of the QED field equations in the Lorenz gauge, the four-potential obeys an inhomogeneous wave equation whose source is a conserved current:

□Aν=e Jνand∂νJν=0.\Box A^\nu = e\,J^\nu \qquad\text{and}\qquad \partial_\nu J^\nu = 0 .□Aν=eJνand∂νJν=0.

This is the "QED version of the classical Maxwell equations in the Lorenz gauge" of the source, together with the conservation law that makes the source of that wave equation consistent. It fixes no gauge beyond Lorenz, no representation of the Dirac matrices, and no sign or normalization beyond those of the stated Lagrangian.

Significance

The classical layer is what every later construction quantizes. The Clifford relation is what makes the Dirac operator a square root of the wave operator; the U(1)U(1)U(1) invariance of L\mathcal{L}L is what forces the coupling to be through DμD_\muDμ and what makes the current conserved by Noether's theorem; conservation of JμJ^\muJμ is the consistency condition without which ∂μFμν=eJν\partial_\mu F^{\mu\nu} = eJ^\nu∂μFμν=eJν has no solutions at all, since the left side is annihilated by ∂ν\partial_\nu∂ν identically. The Lorenz-gauge wave equation is the form in which the photon propagator is read off.

Formalizing it adds a reusable, machine-checked Minkowski-space field-theory layer: a metric with index raising, coordinate partial derivatives on R4\mathbb{R}^4R4 with a wave operator, an abstract Dirac representation together with a concrete basis satisfying it, the field tensor, the covariant derivative, the Dirac current and the QED Lagrangian. Mathlib has Clifford algebras and Fréchet calculus, but not this concrete apparatus. None of the statements in this mission is currently known to have a machine-checked proof; all are standard textbook results with well-understood proofs, so the work is formalization rather than discovery.

Difficulty

The arguments are elementary on paper and awkward in Lean for three separate reasons.

First, all index manipulation is explicit: raising an index is a sum over Fin 4\mathrm{Fin}\ 4Fin 4, and every "obvious" rearrangement of ∑μαβημαηνβ∂μ∂αAβ\sum_{\mu\alpha\beta}\eta^{\mu\alpha}\eta^{\nu\beta}\partial_\mu\partial_\alpha A_\beta∑μαβημαηνβ∂μ∂αAβ has to be done by hand with Finset.sum lemmas.

Second, differentiation is Fréchet differentiation in disguise: ∂μf\partial_\mu f∂μf is the derivative of fff evaluated at a basis vector, so the product rule, the sum rule and the symmetry of second derivatives each require the corresponding differentiability side conditions. The naive move of treating ∂μ\partial_\mu∂μ as a formal symbol that commutes with everything fails: without a C2C^2C2 hypothesis, ∂μ∂ν≠∂ν∂μ\partial_\mu\partial_\nu \ne \partial_\nu\partial_\mu∂μ∂ν=∂ν∂μ, and without differentiability the derivative takes the junk value 000, so an identity that "obviously" holds termwise may hold only under the stated smoothness assumption.

Third, the current conservation law is not a pure computation: it needs the Dirac equation, the hermiticity relation (γμ)†=γ0γμγ0(\gamma^\mu)^\dagger = \gamma^0\gamma^\mu\gamma^0(γμ)†=γ0γμγ0, and the reality of mmm, eee and AμA_\muAμ, in the precise combination that cancels the terms containing AμA_\muAμ between ∂μψˉ\partial_\mu\bar\psi∂μψˉ and ∂μψ\partial_\mu\psi∂μψ. Any attempt to prove it from smoothness alone, without the equation of motion, cannot work — the current of an arbitrary smooth spinor field is not conserved.

Formalization scope

Spacetime is Fin 4 → ℝ, a gauge field is Spacetime → Fin 4 → ℝ with lower index, a spinor field is Spacetime → Fin 4 → ℂ, and the Dirac matrices are Fin 4 → Matrix (Fin 4) (Fin 4) ℂ. Sums over indices are Finset.sum over Fin 4. Partial derivatives are fderiv ℝ f x (Pi.single μ 1), which is 000 when fff is not differentiable at xxx; smoothness hypotheses are stated as ContDiff ℝ 1 or ContDiff ℝ 2 exactly where they are used. Complex conjugation is starRingEnd ℂ, matrix adjoint is Matrix.conjTranspose, and the coupling constant eee, the mass mmm and the gauge parameter χ\chiχ are real, with no positivity or nonvanishing assumption on eee or mmm.

Conventions fixed once and shared by every statement: signature (+,−,−,−)(+,-,-,-)(+,−,−,−); Dμ=∂μ+ieAμD_\mu = \partial_\mu + ieA_\muDμ=∂μ+ieAμ; Fμν=∂μAν−∂νAμF_{\mu\nu} = \partial_\mu A_\nu - \partial_\nu A_\muFμν=∂μAν−∂νAμ; Jμ=ψˉγμψJ^\mu = \bar\psi\gamma^\mu\psiJμ=ψˉγμψ taken as a real number via its real part, with the reality of the underlying complex pairing stated as a separate target; the Maxwell equation carries the coupling on the right-hand side as ∂μFμν=eJν\partial_\mu F^{\mu\nu} = eJ^\nu∂μFμν=eJν; and the Dirac equation is ∑μiγμDμψ=mψ\sum_\mu i\gamma^\mu D_\mu\psi = m\psi∑μiγμDμψ=mψ.

The statements are not vacuous: ψ=0\psi = 0ψ=0, A=0A = 0A=0 satisfies all field equations, plane-wave solutions of the free Dirac equation satisfy the Dirac hypothesis with A=0A = 0A=0, and the concrete Dirac basis witnesses the abstract representation hypothesis, so no hypothesis in the mission is unsatisfiable. The goal is not trivially true: it asserts a pointwise identity between second derivatives of AAA and a quadratic expression in ψ\psiψ, not an implication between definitionally equal objects.

A complete development needs Mathlib's fderiv calculus (product rule, symmetry of the second derivative via IsSymmSndFDerivAt), Finset.sum manipulation, Matrix arithmetic over ℂ, and Complex.exp. The Minkowski-space layer — metric, partial derivatives, wave operator, field tensor, Dirac representation — is reusable for any later mission on classical field theory or on the quantized theory. Contributions of further structural results in this notation (energy–momentum tensor, plane-wave solutions, the free-field propagator) are welcome as follow-up problems.

Flat ΛCDM Cosmology: The Closed-Form Expansion LawTextbook

Motivation

The ΛCDM model — "Lambda cold dark matter" — is the standard cosmological model: a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe governed by general relativity, whose energy content is dominated today by cold dark matter and by a cosmological constant Λ\LambdaΛ acting as dark energy. It is the framework in which the cosmic microwave background, the large-scale distribution of galaxies, the primordial light-element abundances, and the observed accelerating expansion are fitted simultaneously with a handful of parameters.

Inside this model, almost everything quantitative requires numerical integration of the Friedmann equations. There is one striking exception: for a spatially flat universe containing only pressureless matter and a positive cosmological constant, and with radiation neglected, the expansion history has a closed form in elementary functions. That closed form is where the textbook statements "the universe is about 13.813.813.8 billion years old" and "the expansion switched from decelerating to accelerating at redshift z≈0.6z \approx 0.6z≈0.6" actually come from. This mission formalizes that closed form and the two consequences just named.

Setting

Write a(t)a(t)a(t) for the dimensionless scale factor of a homogeneous isotropic universe, normalized so that a=1a = 1a=1 at the present epoch, and H(t)=a˙(t)/a(t)H(t) = \dot a(t)/a(t)H(t)=a˙(t)/a(t) for the Hubble parameter; H0>0H_0 > 0H0>0 denotes its present-day value. The energy content is described by present-day density parameters Ωi\Omega_iΩi, the ratios of each species' density to the critical density ρc=3H02/(8πG)\rho_c = 3H_0^2/(8\pi G)ρc=3H02/(8πG). This mission works with the minimal, radiation-free, spatially flat case: a matter parameter Ωm>0\Omega_m > 0Ωm>0 and a dark-energy parameter ΩΛ>0\Omega_\Lambda > 0ΩΛ>0 with

Ωm+ΩΛ=1.\Omega_m + \Omega_\Lambda = 1 .Ωm+ΩΛ=1.

Matter dilutes as a−3a^{-3}a−3 and the cosmological constant does not dilute at all, so the first Friedmann equation for this content reads

(a˙a)2  =  H02(Ωma3+ΩΛ).\left(\frac{\dot a}{a}\right)^{2} \;=\; H_0^{2}\left(\frac{\Omega_m}{a^{3}} + \Omega_\Lambda\right).(aa˙)2=H02(a3Ωm+ΩΛ).

The candidate closed-form solution, with the big bang placed at t=0t = 0t=0, is

a(t)  =  (ΩmΩΛ)1/3 sinh⁡2/3 ⁣(32ΩΛ H0 t),t>0,a(t) \;=\; \left(\frac{\Omega_m}{\Omega_\Lambda}\right)^{1/3}\, \sinh^{2/3}\!\left(\tfrac{3}{2}\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}\,H_0\,t\right), \qquad t > 0,a(t)=(ΩΛΩm)1/3sinh2/3(23ΩΛH0t),t>0,

and the time at which it reaches a=1a = 1a=1 — the predicted age of the universe — is

t0  =  23H0ΩΛ  arsinh⁡ΩΛΩm.t_0 \;=\; \frac{2}{3H_0\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}}\;\operatorname{arsinh}\sqrt{\frac{\Omega_\Lambda}{\Omega_m}}.t0=3H0ΩΛ2arsinhΩmΩΛ.

All quantities are real; sinh⁡2/3\sinh^{2/3}sinh2/3 is the real power x↦x2/3x \mapsto x^{2/3}x↦x2/3 applied to sinh⁡\sinhsinh, which is positive for t>0t > 0t>0.

Target

The goal theorem asserts that the displayed a(t)a(t)a(t) is a positive solution of the flat matter-plus-Λ\LambdaΛ Friedmann equation on t>0t > 0t>0, normalized by a(t0)=1a(t_0) = 1a(t0)=1 at the age t0>0t_0 > 0t0>0 given above:

0<a(t),(a˙(t)a(t))2=H02(Ωma(t)3+ΩΛ)(t>0),0<t0,a(t0)=1.0 < a(t), \qquad \left(\frac{\dot a(t)}{a(t)}\right)^{2} = H_0^{2}\left(\frac{\Omega_m}{a(t)^{3}} + \Omega_\Lambda\right) \quad (t > 0), \qquad 0 < t_0, \qquad a(t_0) = 1 .0<a(t),(a(t)a˙(t))2=H02(a(t)3Ωm+ΩΛ)(t>0),0<t0,a(t0)=1.

The milestones build to this and then go beyond it, in increasing strength: the derivative a˙=aH0ΩΛcoth⁡θ\dot a = a H_0\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}\coth\thetaa˙=aH0ΩΛcothθ with θ=32ΩΛH0t\theta = \tfrac32\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}H_0 tθ=23ΩΛH0t; the Friedmann equation itself; the normalization a(t0)=1a(t_0) = 1a(t0)=1; the equivalent logarithmic age formula

t0=23H0ΩΛ log⁡1+ΩΛΩm;t_0 = \frac{2}{3H_0\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}}\,\log\frac{1+\sqrt{\Omega_\Lambda}}{\sqrt{\Omega_m}};t0=3H0ΩΛ2logΩm1+ΩΛ;

the deceleration-to-acceleration transition, a¨(t)=0\ddot a(t) = 0a¨(t)=0 exactly when a(t)3=Ωm/(2ΩΛ)a(t)^3 = \Omega_m/(2\Omega_\Lambda)a(t)3=Ωm/(2ΩΛ), together with the sign criterion a¨(t)>0  ⟺  Ωm<2ΩΛa(t)3\ddot a(t) > 0 \iff \Omega_m < 2\Omega_\Lambda a(t)^3a¨(t)>0⟺Ωm<2ΩΛa(t)3; the qualitative picture that aaa is strictly increasing on (0,∞)(0,\infty)(0,∞) and tends to 000 as t↓0t \downarrow 0t↓0; and finally the statement that the closed form, together with the density ρ=ρc(Ωma−3+ΩΛ)\rho = \rho_c(\Omega_m a^{-3} + \Omega_\Lambda)ρ=ρc(Ωma−3+ΩΛ) and the pressure p=−ρcΩΛp = -\rho_c\Omega_\Lambdap=−ρcΩΛ, satisfies both Friedmann equations, i.e. assembles into an FRW universe in the sense of the platform's existing FRWUniverse definition.

Significance

The result. The closed form turns cosmological parameter statements into arithmetic. With Ωm≈0.315\Omega_m \approx 0.315Ωm≈0.315, ΩΛ≈0.685\Omega_\Lambda \approx 0.685ΩΛ≈0.685 and H0≈67.4 km s−1Mpc−1H_0 \approx 67.4\ \mathrm{km\,s^{-1}Mpc^{-1}}H0≈67.4 kms−1Mpc−1 it yields the standard age of roughly 13.813.813.8 billion years, and the transition condition a3=Ωm/(2ΩΛ)a^3 = \Omega_m/(2\Omega_\Lambda)a3=Ωm/(2ΩΛ) gives 1+z=(2ΩΛ/Ωm)1/3≈1.61+z = (2\Omega_\Lambda/\Omega_m)^{1/3} \approx 1.61+z=(2ΩΛ/Ωm)1/3≈1.6, i.e. z≈0.6z \approx 0.6z≈0.6. Both numbers are quoted constantly; here they are consequences of a theorem rather than of a numerical integration. The transition result is also the precise sense in which a positive Λ\LambdaΛ is what makes the late-time expansion accelerate.

Formalizing it. The mathematics is classical and the derivation is standard in cosmology texts; nothing here is an open question. What the mission produces is a machine-checked account: a reusable parameter bundle for the flat ΛCDM model, a verified closed-form solution of a nonlinear ODE, verified transcendental identities for the age, and a bridge to the platform's existing FRW-cosmology development, so that later work on distances, horizons, or the radiation-inclusive model can build on published statements instead of restating them.

Difficulty

The obstruction is not conceptual but analytic. The scale factor is a real power x2/3x^{2/3}x2/3 of sinh⁡\sinhsinh, so it is not differentiable by the polynomial-power rules: every derivative step goes through the real rpow API, needs positivity of sinh⁡θ\sinh\thetasinhθ on t>0t > 0t>0, and produces exponents that must be recombined by hand (a3a^3a3 collapses to (Ωm/ΩΛ)sinh⁡2θ(\Omega_m/\Omega_\Lambda)\sinh^2\theta(Ωm/ΩΛ)sinh2θ only after such a step). The Friedmann identity itself then rests on coth⁡2=1+csch⁡2\coth^2 = 1 + \operatorname{csch}^2coth2=1+csch2, which must be applied where sinh⁡θ≠0\sinh\theta \neq 0sinhθ=0. The age milestones require the explicit value of arsinh⁡\operatorname{arsinh}arsinh as a logarithm together with the flatness relation Ωm=1−ΩΛ\Omega_m = 1 - \Omega_\LambdaΩm=1−ΩΛ. The second-derivative milestones require differentiating the first-derivative formula again and tracking the sign of sinh⁡2θ−13cosh⁡2θ\sinh^2\theta - \tfrac13\cosh^2\thetasinh2θ−31cosh2θ; the naive route of computing deriv (deriv ·) symbolically without first establishing a HasDerivAt statement on a neighbourhood is the main trap.

Formalization scope

Parameters are bundled in a structure carrying H0>0H_0 > 0H0>0, Ωm>0\Omega_m > 0Ωm>0, ΩΛ>0\Omega_\Lambda > 0ΩΛ>0 and Ωm+ΩΛ=1\Omega_m + \Omega_\Lambda = 1Ωm+ΩΛ=1; radiation and curvature are absent by construction, and dark energy is a true cosmological constant (w=−1w = -1w=−1), not a general equation of state. Time is a real variable with the big bang at t=0t = 0t=0, and every statement about the solution is restricted to t>0t > 0t>0, where sinh⁡θ>0\sinh\theta > 0sinhθ>0; outside that range the real power of a non-positive base is a junk value and nothing is claimed. Powers x1/3x^{1/3}x1/3, x2/3x^{2/3}x2/3 are real powers, while a3a^3a3 is a natural-number power. Derivatives are Mathlib's deriv/HasDerivAt; the Friedmann equation is stated in the source's ratio form (a˙/a)2=H02(Ωma−3+ΩΛ)(\dot a/a)^2 = H_0^2(\Omega_m a^{-3} + \Omega_\Lambda)(a˙/a)2=H02(Ωma−3+ΩΛ) rather than a cleared-denominator variant, and a(t)>0a(t) > 0a(t)>0 is part of the goal, so the statement cannot be satisfied by a degenerate a≡0a \equiv 0a≡0. The hypotheses Ωm,ΩΛ>0\Omega_m, \Omega_\Lambda > 0Ωm,ΩΛ>0 with Ωm+ΩΛ=1\Omega_m + \Omega_\Lambda = 1Ωm+ΩΛ=1 are jointly satisfiable, so no statement is vacuous.

The final milestone reuses the published FRWUniverse structure (an FRW universe with Newton's constant GGG, curvature KKK, time domain III, scale factor and its two derivatives, density, its derivative, and pressure, subject to both Friedmann equations pointwise) rather than introducing a competing model; contributions that connect these statements to distance–redshift relations, or that relax flatness or restore radiation, are welcome.

Planck Units: Uniqueness of the c–G–ħ–k_B NormalizationTextbook

Motivation

A system of natural units fixes the size of the base units not by reference to an artefact or a historical convention, but by declaring that certain universal constants have numerical value 111. The oldest and most widely used such system is the one Max Planck proposed in 1899, at the end of Über irreversible Strahlungsvorgänge, built from the speed of light ccc, the gravitational constant GGG, the quantum of action (today ℏ\hbarℏ) and the Boltzmann constant kBk_BkB. Planck's claim for these units was that they are "independent of special bodies or substances" and therefore retain their meaning "for all times and for all civilizations, including extraterrestrial and non-human ones".

The claim that gives the system its force is a uniqueness claim: there is one and only one choice of base length, mass, time and temperature for which all four constants read 111. Textbooks and reference works state the resulting expressions lP=ℏG/c3l_P=\sqrt{\hbar G/c^3}lP=ℏG/c3, mP=ℏc/Gm_P=\sqrt{\hbar c/G}mP=ℏc/G, tP=ℏG/c5t_P=\sqrt{\hbar G/c^5}tP=ℏG/c5, TP=ℏc5/G/kBT_P=\sqrt{\hbar c^5/G}/k_BTP=ℏc5/G/kB as the Planck units, but the accompanying argument is usually a dimensional-analysis sketch rather than a proof that the defining system of equations has exactly one positive solution. This mission formalizes the statement and its standard consequences.

Setting

Fix four positive real numbers ccc, GGG, ℏ\hbarℏ, kBk_BkB — the numerical values of the four constants in some reference system of units (SI, say).

A unit system is a quadruple u=(L,M,T,Θ)u=(L,M,T,\Theta)u=(L,M,T,Θ) of positive reals: the size of the chosen unit of length, mass, time and temperature, measured in the reference system. Changing to uuu divides every quantity by the appropriate product of L,M,T,ΘL,M,T,\ThetaL,M,T,Θ. Concretely, a speed is divided by L/TL/TL/T, a quantity of dimension L3M−1T−2L^3M^{-1}T^{-2}L3M−1T−2 (the dimension of GGG) by L3/(MT2)L^3/(MT^2)L3/(MT2), an action by ML2/TML^2/TML2/T, and a heat capacity by ML2/(T2Θ)ML^2/(T^2\Theta)ML2/(T2Θ).

Say that uuu normalizes c,G,ℏ,kBc,G,\hbar,k_Bc,G,ℏ,kB when each of the four constants has numerical value 111 in uuu, i.e. when

LT=c,L3MT2=G,ML2T=ℏ,ML2T2Θ=kB.\frac{L}{T}=c,\qquad \frac{L^3}{MT^2}=G,\qquad \frac{ML^2}{T}=\hbar,\qquad \frac{ML^2}{T^2\Theta}=k_B .TL=c,MT2L3=G,TML2=ℏ,T2ΘML2=kB.

The Planck system is the quadruple

(ℏGc3, ℏcG, ℏGc5, 1kBℏc5G).\Big(\sqrt{\tfrac{\hbar G}{c^3}},\ \sqrt{\tfrac{\hbar c}{G}},\ \sqrt{\tfrac{\hbar G}{c^5}},\ \tfrac{1}{k_B}\sqrt{\tfrac{\hbar c^5}{G}}\Big).(c3ℏG, Gℏc, c5ℏG, kB1Gℏc5).

Formalization targets

Goal

∃! (L,M,T,Θ)∈(0,∞)4:LT=c,  L3MT2=G,  ML2T=ℏ,  ML2T2Θ=kB,\exists!\,(L,M,T,\Theta)\in(0,\infty)^4:\quad \frac{L}{T}=c,\ \ \frac{L^3}{MT^2}=G,\ \ \frac{ML^2}{T}=\hbar,\ \ \frac{ML^2}{T^2\Theta}=k_B,∃!(L,M,T,Θ)∈(0,∞)4:TL=c,  MT2L3=G,  TML2=ℏ,  T2ΘML2=kB,

together with the identification of that unique solution as the Planck system above. The statement is asserted for arbitrary positive c,G,ℏ,kBc,G,\hbar,k_Bc,G,ℏ,kB, so it does not depend on the SI values of the constants, and it fixes nothing beyond positivity.

Supporting targets

The milestones record the standard relations among the Planck units: lP=c tPl_P=c\,t_PlP=ctP; the reduced Compton wavelength ℏ/(mPc)\hbar/(m_Pc)ℏ/(mPc) of the Planck mass equals lPl_PlP; the Schwarzschild radius 2GmP/c22Gm_P/c^22GmP/c2 of the Planck mass equals 2lP2l_P2lP; the coherent derived units of Table 2 of the source (energy, momentum, force, density, acceleration, frequency) have the stated closed forms; Newton's law of gravitation takes the constant-free form F′=m1′m2′/r′2F'=m_1'm_2'/r'^2F′=m1′m2′/r′2 when every quantity is replaced by its ratio to the corresponding Planck unit; and normalizing 4πG4\pi G4πG in place of GGG yields the rationalized Planck units.

Significance

The uniqueness statement is what licenses the everyday practice of "setting c=G=ℏ=kB=1c=G=\hbar=k_B=1c=G=ℏ=kB=1": it says that the convention determines the units completely, so that a dimensionless equation written in Planck units can be translated back into a dimensional one in exactly one way. It also makes precise the sense in which the Planck scale is defined rather than measured: the quantities 10−35 m10^{-35}\,\mathrm{m}10−35m, 10−43 s10^{-43}\,\mathrm{s}10−43s, 10−8 kg10^{-8}\,\mathrm{kg}10−8kg are consequences of the SI values of four constants and of nothing else.

What formalization adds here is not a new theorem — the algebra is elementary and the result is classical — but a machine-checked statement of a claim that is normally left implicit, together with a reusable Lean model of "system of base units" and "constant normalized to 111" in which variant conventions can be stated and compared. The rationalized-units milestone is included precisely to exercise that generality: it is the same theorem applied to 4πG4\pi G4πG instead of GGG, and it shows that the formalization does not secretly hard-code the Planck convention.

Difficulty

The obvious argument — "count dimensions, invert a 4×44\times44×4 exponent matrix" — proves uniqueness of the exponents in a monomial ansatz L=caGbℏdL=c^aG^b\hbar^dL=caGbℏd, not uniqueness of the solution among all positive quadruples, which is what the claim asserts. The formal statement therefore has to be proved directly from the four equations: eliminate MMM and Θ\ThetaΘ, reduce to L5=GℏT3L^5=G\hbar T^3L5=GℏT3 with T=L/cT=L/cT=L/c, and cancel a positive factor L3L^3L3. The remaining friction is Lean-side rather than mathematical: the four defining equations are stated with division, so every step carries a non-vanishing side condition, and the closed forms are square roots, so equalities are proved by comparing squares of non-negative reals rather than by ring alone.

Formalization scope

The development is over ℝ. A unit system is a structure with four real fields, positivity is a separate predicate rather than a subtype, and "normalizes" is the conjunction of the four displayed equations as written with division — for a positive unit system this is equivalent to the product form, but the division form is what the statements use. All four constants are universally quantified positive reals; no SI numerals appear anywhere in the development, and the milestones about the derived units state closed forms (e.g. force =c4/G=c^4/G=c4/G, density =c5/(ℏG2)=c^5/(\hbar G^2)=c5/(ℏG2)) rather than decimal approximations.

Two trivialization risks are ruled out explicitly. The hypotheses are satisfiable — the Planck system itself is exhibited as a positive solution in the first milestone — so the uniqueness statement is not vacuous. And the goal is not merely "the Planck system normalizes the constants": it also asserts that every positive normalizing system equals it.

Infrastructure needed beyond Mathlib is minimal: Real.sqrt and its interaction with squaring and positivity. The unit-system model is reusable for other natural-unit conventions (Stoney units, reduced Planck units with 8πG=18\pi G=18πG=1, Hartree atomic units), and contributions extending it in that direction are welcome.

Coupling Constant: One-Loop Running, Asymptotic Freedom and the Landau PoleTextbook

Motivation

A coupling constant is the number that fixes the strength of an interaction: it is the coefficient that multiplies the interaction term of a Lagrangian relative to its kinetic term, and in a perturbative treatment it is the parameter the expansion is organised in. The central structural fact about such a coupling in a quantum field theory is that it is not constant: once quantum corrections are resummed, the coupling depends on the energy scale μ\muμ at which the theory is probed. This scale dependence — the running of the coupling — is what distinguishes quantum electrodynamics, whose coupling grows with energy until perturbation theory breaks down (the Landau pole), from quantum chromodynamics, whose coupling decreases logarithmically at high energy (asymptotic freedom, Gross–Politzer–Wilczek, Nobel Prize in Physics 2004).

This mission formalizes the elementary mathematics behind those statements: the one-loop renormalization-group equation, its exact solution, and the two qualitatively different behaviours it produces depending on the sign of the one-loop coefficient. The source is the Wikipedia article Coupling constant (sections Beta functions, QED and the Landau pole, QCD and asymptotic freedom), which states these facts in prose and in the single displayed formula for the running QCD coupling.

Setting

Write ggg for a single real coupling and t=log⁡μt = \log \mut=logμ for the logarithm of the energy scale. The beta function is defined by

dgdt  =  μdgdμ  =  β(g),\frac{dg}{dt} \;=\; \mu \frac{dg}{d\mu} \;=\; \beta(g),dtdg=μdμdg=β(g),

and at one loop β\betaβ is a cubic monomial,

β(g)  =  b g3,\beta(g) \;=\; b\,g^{3},β(g)=bg3,

with a scheme- and theory-dependent real coefficient bbb. Saying that ggg runs at one loop on a set of scales SSS means that ggg is differentiable at every t∈St \in St∈S with g′(t)=b g(t)3g'(t) = b\,g(t)^{3}g′(t)=bg(t)3.

For QCD the article records the one-loop form of the strong coupling directly in terms of the process energy QQQ and the QCD scale Λ\LambdaΛ:

α(Q)  =  1β0 log⁡ ⁣(Q2/Λ2),β0>0, Λ>0.\alpha(Q) \;=\; \frac{1}{\beta_0 \,\log\!\big(Q^{2}/\Lambda^{2}\big)},\qquad \beta_0>0,\ \Lambda>0 .α(Q)=β0log(Q2/Λ2)1,β0>0, Λ>0.

Target

The goal theorem is the dichotomy governed by the sign of bbb, for an initial condition g(0)=g0>0g(0) = g_0 > 0g(0)=g0>0 at the reference scale t=0t = 0t=0:

  1. Asymptotic freedom (b<0b < 0b<0). Every solution on [0,∞)[0,\infty)[0,∞) satisfies
lim⁡t→∞g(t)=0,lim⁡t→∞2∣b∣ t g(t)2=1,\lim_{t\to\infty} g(t) = 0, \qquad \lim_{t\to\infty} 2|b|\,t\,g(t)^{2} = 1,t→∞limg(t)=0,t→∞lim2∣b∣tg(t)2=1,

i.e. g(t)2∼1/(2∣b∣log⁡μ)g(t)^{2} \sim 1/(2|b|\log\mu)g(t)2∼1/(2∣b∣logμ): the coupling dies off logarithmically in the energy.

  1. Landau pole (b>0b > 0b>0). No solution exists on the whole closed interval
[ 0, 12 b g02 ];\Big[\,0,\ \frac{1}{2\,b\,g_0^{2}}\,\Big];[0, 2bg021];

the flow cannot be continued up to the finite scale t∗=1/(2bg02)t_\ast = 1/(2bg_0^{2})t∗=1/(2bg02), which is the Landau pole of the one-loop approximation.

Both follow from the exact one-loop solution, which is itself a milestone:

g(t)2 (1−2b g02 t)  =  g02.g(t)^{2}\,\big(1 - 2b\,g_0^{2}\,t\big) \;=\; g_0^{2}.g(t)2(1−2bg02t)=g02.

Significance

The dichotomy above is the mathematical content of the two headline claims made about running couplings: that a positive one-loop coefficient drives the coupling to infinity at a finite energy, and that a negative one makes it vanish logarithmically at high energy. The milestones also isolate the statement that a vanishing beta function means the coupling does not run at all (scale invariance), and record the elementary analytic properties of the explicit QCD formula α(Q)=1/(β0log⁡(Q2/Λ2))\alpha(Q) = 1/(\beta_0\log(Q^2/\Lambda^2))α(Q)=1/(β0log(Q2/Λ2)): it is strictly decreasing above Λ\LambdaΛ, tends to 000 as Q→∞Q\to\inftyQ→∞, and satisfies the one-loop flow equation dα/dQ=−(2/Q) β0 α2d\alpha/dQ = -(2/Q)\,\beta_0\,\alpha^{2}dα/dQ=−(2/Q)β0α2.

Nothing here is open mathematics: these are exercises in the theory of a separable scalar ODE. What the mission produces is a machine-checked, reusable Lean development of the one-loop renormalization-group flow — a small piece of formalized physics infrastructure that later missions on renormalization or dimensional transmutation can import.

Difficulty

The only real subtlety is that the exact solution is obtained by differentiating t↦g(t)−2t \mapsto g(t)^{-2}t↦g(t)−2, which requires knowing in advance that the solution never vanishes. Positivity is not assumed: it is a separate milestone, and must be derived from the initial condition together with the flow equation (if ggg reached 000 at a first time t1t_1t1, the identity g(t)−2=g0−2−2btg(t)^{-2} = g_0^{-2} - 2btg(t)−2=g0−2−2bt on [0,t1)[0,t_1)[0,t1) forces g(t1)2g(t_1)^2g(t1)2 to have a strictly positive limit). The Landau-pole statement is a non-existence claim and has no analytic content beyond this, but it does depend on the positivity step.

Formalization scope

Scales are parametrised logarithmically: the independent variable is t=log⁡μ∈Rt = \log\mu \in \mathbb{R}t=logμ∈R, the coupling is a function g:R→Rg : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}g:R→R, and the flow hypothesis is imposed pointwise as a two-sided derivative at each point of the given set (at an endpoint of a closed interval this is slightly stronger than a one-sided derivative, which only strengthens the hypotheses of the positive results and weakens the non-existence claim — the Landau pole statement is therefore the conservative reading). No uniqueness or existence theory for ODEs is assumed; the statements quantify over arbitrary functions satisfying the flow equation. The QCD formula is taken with real arguments and no constraint tying β0\beta_0β0 or Λ\LambdaΛ to a particular number of flavours; the numerical values quoted in the source (αs(MZ2)=0.1179±0.0010\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1179 \pm 0.0010αs(MZ2)=0.1179±0.0010, Λ≈332\Lambda \approx 332Λ≈332 MeV) are measurements and are deliberately not formalized.

Degenerate cases are visible in the statements rather than hidden: b=0b = 0b=0 appears as its own milestone (constant coupling), and the value of α(Q)\alpha(Q)α(Q) for Q≤ΛQ \le \LambdaQ≤Λ, where the logarithm is non-positive or zero, is never asserted.
