This is an auxiliary max-formula statement for directional slopes of finite convex functions.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space and let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be convex on all of EEE. For every x,v∈Ex,v\in Ex,v∈E, there exists g∈Eg\in Eg∈E such that:

  1. ggg is a subgradient of uuu at xxx:
u(x)+⟨g,y−x⟩≤u(y)for every y∈E.u(x)+\langle g,y-x\rangle\le u(y)\qquad\text{for every }y\in E.u(x)+⟨g,y−x⟩≤u(y)for every y∈E.
  1. For every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, there exists t>0t>0t>0 with
u(x+tv)−u(x)t≤⟨g,v⟩+ε.\frac{u(x+t v)-u(x)}{t}\le \langle g,v\rangle+\varepsilon.tu(x+tv)−u(x)≤⟨g,v⟩+ε.

Thus the pairing with vvv is approximated from above by positive directional difference quotients, while the subgradient inequality supplies the corresponding lower bound. The declaration exists_subgradient_slope_le_inner_add_readable is useful for selecting subgradients compatible with one-sided directional derivatives.
