This is a block-sum identity used in partial symmetrization.

Let Ω\OmegaΩ be finite, let VVV be a real inner-product space, and let ρ\rhoρ be a permutation representation by linear isometries. Let A,B,Q⊆ΩA,B,Q\subseteq\OmegaA,B,Q⊆Ω satisfy A⊆Q⊆A∪BA\subseteq Q\subseteq A\cup BA⊆Q⊆A∪B. For v∈Vv\in Vv∈V and a function TTT on finite subsets, assume that for every permutation σ\sigmaσ fixing outside A∪BA\cup BA∪B,

ρ(σ)v=T(σ(A)).\rho(\sigma)v=T(\sigma(A)).ρ(σ)v=T(σ(A)).

Then

∑σ fixing outside Qρ(σ)v=#{σ fixing outside Q}(∣Q∣∣A∣)∑F⊆Q∣F∣=∣A∣T(F).\sum_{\sigma\text{ fixing outside }Q}\rho(\sigma)v =\frac{\#\{\sigma\text{ fixing outside }Q\}}{\binom{|Q|}{|A|}} \sum_{\substack{F\subseteq Q\\|F|=|A|}}T(F).σ fixing outside Q∑ρ(σ)v=(∣A∣∣Q∣)#{σ fixing outside Q}F⊆Q∣F∣=∣A∣∑T(F).

The identity converts a permutation sum into a sum over subsets, with the common fiber size accounted for by the scalar factor.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
