This lemma identifies the gradient of a mollified scalar function.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with its Borel structure. Let U:E→RU:E\to\mathbb RU:E→R be C1C^1C1 and suppose that ∇U\nabla U∇U is Lipschitz with constant G∈[0,∞)G\in[0,\infty)G∈[0,∞). For every smooth compactly supported bump φ\varphiφ,

∇(φnorm ⁣∗U)=φnorm ⁣∗∇U.\nabla\bigl(\varphi^{\mathrm{norm}}\!\ast U\bigr) = \varphi^{\mathrm{norm}}\!\ast\nabla U.∇(φnorm∗U)=φnorm∗∇U.

The convolution is with respect to volume measure and scalar multiplication is represented by ContinuousLinearMap.lsmul. This technical identity supports approximation by smooth convolutions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
