This gives a smooth approximation scheme for a function with Lipschitz gradient.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with its Borel structure. Let U:E→RU:E\to\mathbb RU:E→R be C1C^1C1, and suppose that ∇U\nabla U∇U is Lipschitz with constant G∈[0,∞)G\in[0,\infty)G∈[0,∞). Then there exists a sequence Uk:E→RU_k:E\to\mathbb RUk:E→R such that:

  1. Every UkU_kUk is C∞C^\inftyC∞.
  2. For every kkk and x∈Ex\in Ex∈E,
∥∇Uk(x)−∇U(x)∥≤Gk+1.\|\nabla U_k(x)-\nabla U(x)\|\leq \frac{G}{k+1}.∥∇Uk(x)−∇U(x)∥≤k+1G.
  1. Every ∇Uk\nabla U_k∇Uk is Lipschitz with the same constant GGG.
  2. For every xxx, Uk(x)→U(x)U_k(x)\to U(x)Uk(x)→U(x) as k→∞k\to\inftyk→∞.
  3. For almost every xxx with respect to volume measure, D(∇Uk)(x)D(\nabla U_k)(x)D(∇Uk)(x) converges to D(∇U)(x)D(\nabla U)(x)D(∇U)(x) as k→∞k\to\inftyk→∞.

The sequence is a reusable regularization device preserving the Lipschitz-gradient bound while providing almost-everywhere Hessian convergence.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
