This gives the covariance formula for the second cumulant.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with Borel structure, let μ\muμ be a probability measure, and let r>0r>0r>0 satisfy

∫er∥x∥ dμ(x)<∞.\int e^{r\|x\|}\,d\mu(x)<\infty.∫er∥x∥dμ(x)<∞.

For every u,v∈Eu,v\in Eu,v∈E,

κ2μ(u,v)=∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩ dμ(x)−(∫⟨u,x⟩ dμ(x))(∫⟨v,x⟩ dμ(x)).\kappa_2^\mu(u,v) = \int\langle u,x\rangle\langle v,x\rangle\,d\mu(x) - \left(\int\langle u,x\rangle\,d\mu(x)\right) \left(\int\langle v,x\rangle\,d\mu(x)\right).κ2μ(u,v)=∫⟨u,x⟩⟨v,x⟩dμ(x)−(∫⟨u,x⟩dμ(x))(∫⟨v,x⟩dμ(x)).

Thus the second cumulant is the centered second-moment or covariance pairing. The statement requires no centering assumption, only one positive exponential moment.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
