This auxiliary lemma concerns strict sublevel geometry for an extended-real convex function.

Let EEE be finite-dimensional with a real inner product, and let ϕ:E→R‾\phi:E\to\overline{\mathbb R}ϕ:E→R. Assume:

  1. ϕ(x)≥0\phi(x)\ge0ϕ(x)≥0 for every xxx.
  2. The real epigraph of ϕ\phiϕ is convex.
  3. x0x_0x0 lies in the interior of {x:ϕ(x)≠+∞}\{x:\phi(x)\ne+\infty\}{x:ϕ(x)=+∞}.
  4. ϕ(y)<ϕ(x0)\phi(y)<\phi(x_0)ϕ(y)<ϕ(x0).

Then the strict sublevel set

{x:ϕ(x)<ϕ(x0)}\{x:\phi(x)<\phi(x_0)\}{x:ϕ(x)<ϕ(x0)}

is convex and has nonempty interior.

The result is an internal geometric component for pointwise control of convex extended-real functions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
