This is a technical one-dimensional second-difference lemma for a quadratic second-order expansion.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N, let u:Rn→Ru:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Ru:Rn→R, let x,v,g∈Rnx,v,g\in\mathbb R^nx,v,g∈Rn, and let BBB be a real n×nn\times nn×n matrix, with the space represented by EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin n). Assume that for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, the function uuu satisfies near xxx

∣u(y)−QB,x,g,u(x)(y)∣≤ε∥y−x∥2\left|u(y)-Q_{B,x,g,u(x)}(y)\right|\leq \varepsilon\|y-x\|^2u(y)−QB,x,g,u(x)(y)≤ε∥y−x∥2

for almost every yyy in some neighborhood of xxx, where quadraticAt is the quadratic test function used in the formalization. Then, as t→0t\to0t→0 through positive real values,

u(x+tv)+u(x−tv)−2u(x)t2⟶⟨v,Bv⟩.\frac{u(x+tv)+u(x-tv)-2u(x)}{t^2}\longrightarrow \langle v,Bv\rangle.t2u(x+tv)+u(x−tv)−2u(x)⟶⟨v,Bv⟩.

This auxiliary result extracts the quadratic coefficient from a viscosity-style second-order expansion and is reusable whenever such expansions are available.
