This is a technical identity relating the Hessian of a convolution to an integral of directional second derivatives.

Let n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N, let ρ,u:Rn→R\rho,u:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Rρ,u:Rn→R, and assume that ρ\rhoρ is C2C^2C2 with compact support and that uuu is continuous. For every x,v∈Rnx,v\in\mathbb R^nx,v∈Rn, the quadratic form of the coordinate Hessian of the convolution ρ∗u\rho*uρ∗u satisfies

⟨v,∇2(ρ∗u)(x)v⟩=∫Rnu(y) D2 ⁣[z↦ρ(x−z)](y)[v,v] dy.\left\langle v,\nabla^2(\rho*u)(x)v\right\rangle = \int_{\mathbb R^n}u(y)\,D^2\!\bigl[z\mapsto\rho(x-z)\bigr](y)[v,v] \,dy.⟨v,∇2(ρ∗u)(x)v⟩=∫Rnu(y)D2[z↦ρ(x−z)](y)[v,v]dy.

Here hessianMatrix denotes the coordinate Hessian and convolution uses Lebesgue volume measure. The result provides the integral representation needed to transfer pointwise second-order information through mollification.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
