This is the compact-support differentiation lemma preceding the posterior expectation formula.

Let μ\muμ be a probability measure on a topological, measurable, second-countable Borel space Ω\OmegaΩ, and assume its support is compact. Let ϕ,g:Ω→R\phi,g:\Omega\to\mathbb Rϕ,g:Ω→R be continuous and let f:Ω→Rf:\Omega\to\mathbb Rf:Ω→R be measurable. Assume that for some C≥0C\ge0C≥0,

∥f(x)∥≤Cfor every x∈supp⁡μ.\lVert f(x)\rVert\le C\quad\text{for every }x\in\operatorname{supp}\mu.∥f(x)∥≤Cfor every x∈suppμ.

Then the map

t⟼∫Ωeϕ(x)+tg(x)f(x) dμ(x)t\longmapsto\int_\Omega e^{\phi(x)+t g(x)}f(x)\,d\mu(x)t⟼∫Ωeϕ(x)+tg(x)f(x)dμ(x)

has derivative at t=0t=0t=0 equal to

∫Ωeϕ(x)g(x)f(x) dμ(x).\int_\Omega e^{\phi(x)}g(x)f(x)\,d\mu(x).∫Ωeϕ(x)g(x)f(x)dμ(x).

This result supplies differentiation under the integral sign for unnormalized compactly supported tilts.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
