This pointwise differential identity computes the gradient after subtracting a linear functional.

Let EEE be a complete real inner-product space, let V:E→RV:E\to\mathbb RV:E→R, and let z,x∈Ez,x\in Ez,x∈E. If VVV is differentiable at xxx, then

∇(V−⟨z,⋅⟩)(x)=∇V(x)−z.\nabla\bigl(V-\langle z,\cdot\rangle\bigr)(x)=\nabla V(x)-z.∇(V−⟨z,⋅⟩)(x)=∇V(x)−z.

The statement uses gradient and requires only differentiability of VVV at the specified point. It is the basic calculus identity used when differentiating tilted potentials.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
