This is a pointwise third-order derivative identity.

Let EEE be a complete finite-dimensional real inner-product space, let f:E→Rf:E\to\mathbb Rf:E→R be C3C^3C3, and let x∈Ex\in Ex∈E. With eie_iei denoting the fixed standard orthonormal basis,

⟨∇f(x),∇(Δf)(x)⟩=∑j∂jf(x)∑i∂i∂i∂jf(x).\langle\nabla f(x),\nabla(\Delta f)(x)\rangle = \sum_j \partial_jf(x)\sum_i \partial_i\partial_i\partial_j f(x).⟨∇f(x),∇(Δf)(x)⟩=j∑∂jf(x)i∑∂i∂i∂jf(x).

In the formal expression, the inner sum is written by applying the derivative to y↦∂i∂jf(y)y\mapsto \partial_i\partial_j f(y)y↦∂i∂jf(y) in the direction eie_iei; equality uses commutation of third derivatives. This is an auxiliary identity for local Bochner formulas.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
