This establishes the existence of a strictly exposed contact point below a prescribed level.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space and let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be convex. Let x,p∈Ex,p\in Ex,p∈E satisfy

u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)for all y∈E.u(x)+\langle p,y-x\rangle\le u(y)\quad\text{for all }y\in E.u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)for all y∈E.

For R∈RR\in\mathbb RR∈R, assume u(x)<Ru(x)<Ru(x)<R and that the sublevel set {y:u(y)≤R}\{y:u(y)\le R\}{y:u(y)≤R} is compact. Then there exist z,θ∈Ez,\theta\in Ez,θ∈E such that

u(z)=u(x)+⟨p,z−x⟩,u(z)<R,u(z)=u(x)+\langle p,z-x\rangle,\qquad u(z)<R,u(z)=u(x)+⟨p,z−x⟩,u(z)<R,

and every other contact point in the sublevel set is strictly separated:

u(y)=u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩ ∧ u(y)≤R ∧ y≠z ⟹ ⟨y−z,θ⟩<0.u(y)=u(x)+\langle p,y-x\rangle\ \land\ u(y)\le R\ \land\ y\ne z \ \Longrightarrow\ \langle y-z,\theta\rangle<0.u(y)=u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩ ∧ u(y)≤R ∧ y=z ⟹ ⟨y−z,θ⟩<0.

The result supplies an exposed point for later contact-set arguments; it does not assert uniqueness of all contacts without the additional local volume hypotheses.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
