This proves interior membership for subgradients of a strictly convex function.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space and let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be strictly convex. Let K⊆EK\subseteq EK⊆E be convex with nonempty interior. Assume every subgradient of uuu belongs to KKK:

∀x,p,[∀y, u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)]⇒p∈K.\forall x,p,\quad \bigl[\forall y,\ u(x)+\langle p,y-x\rangle\le u(y)\bigr]\Rightarrow p\in K.∀x,p,[∀y, u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)]⇒p∈K.

Then every such subgradient lies in the interior:

∀x,p,[∀y, u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)]⇒p∈int⁡K.\forall x,p,\quad \bigl[\forall y,\ u(x)+\langle p,y-x\rangle\le u(y)\bigr]\Rightarrow p\in\operatorname{int}K.∀x,p,[∀y, u(x)+⟨p,y−x⟩≤u(y)]⇒p∈intK.

This strengthens closed-range containment and is used when deriving local density bounds.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
