This characterizes when a Legendre transform value is not negative infinity.

Let ϕ:E→R‾\phi:E\to\overline{\mathbb R}ϕ:E→R and y∈Ey\in Ey∈E. Then

Leg⁡(ϕ)(y)≠−∞⟺∃x∈E, ϕ(x)≠+∞.\operatorname{Leg}(\phi)(y)\neq-\infty \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \exists x\in E,\ \phi(x)\neq+\infty.Leg(ϕ)(y)=−∞⟺∃x∈E, ϕ(x)=+∞.

Thus the conjugate avoids −∞-\infty−∞ exactly when the effective domain of ϕ\phiϕ is nonempty. No convexity, measurability, or finiteness assumptions are imposed on the input.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
