This is the Fatou bound for the distributional second derivatives of a convex function.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with its Borel measurable structure. Let u:E→Ru:E\to\mathbb Ru:E→R be convex, let ι\iotaι be a finite type, let vi∈Ev_i\in Evi∈E and ci≥0c_i\geq0ci≥0 for i∈ιi\in\iotai∈ι. Let χ:E→R\chi:E\to\mathbb Rχ:E→R be nonnegative, C2C^2C2, and compactly supported. Let g:E→Rg:E\to\mathbb Rg:E→R be almost everywhere strongly measurable. Assume that, almost everywhere in xxx, for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0 there is δ>0\delta>0δ>0 such that for 0<t<δ0<t<\delta0<t<δ,

g(x)−ε≤∑iciu(x+tvi)+u(x−tvi)−2u(x)t2.g(x)-\varepsilon\leq\sum_i c_i\frac{u(x+t v_i)+u(x-t v_i)-2u(x)}{t^2}.g(x)−ε≤i∑cit2u(x+tvi)+u(x−tvi)−2u(x).

Then

∫g χ dx≤∫u(x)∑ici D2χ(x)[vi,vi] dx.\int g\,\chi\,dx \leq \int u(x)\sum_i c_i\,D^2\chi(x)[v_i,v_i] \,dx.∫gχdx≤∫u(x)i∑ciD2χ(x)[vi,vi]dx.

This is an auxiliary distributional inequality used to integrate lower bounds for second differences against nonnegative test functions.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
