This formalizes Alexandrov's second-order expansion theorem in the finite-dimensional inner-product setting.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with measurable and Borel structures, and let f:E→Rf:E\to\mathbb Rf:E→R be convex on all of EEE. For almost every xxx with respect to Lebesgue measure, there exist p∈Ep\in Ep∈E and a continuous linear map B:E→EB:E\to EB:E→E such that:

  1. BBB is symmetric:
⟨Bv,w⟩=⟨v,Bw⟩(v,w∈E).\langle Bv,w\rangle=\langle v,Bw\rangle\qquad(v,w\in E).⟨Bv,w⟩=⟨v,Bw⟩(v,w∈E).
  1. ppp is the unique subgradient of fff at xxx.
  2. For every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, for all yyy sufficiently near xxx,
∣f(y)−f(x)−⟨p,y−x⟩−12⟨B(y−x),y−x⟩∣≤ε∥y−x∥2.\left|f(y)-f(x)-\langle p,y-x\rangle-\frac12\langle B(y-x),y-x\rangle\right|\le \varepsilon\|y-x\|^2.f(y)−f(x)−⟨p,y−x⟩−21⟨B(y−x),y−x⟩≤ε∥y−x∥2.

The declaration ae_exists_secondOrder_expansion_readable is the main almost-everywhere second-order expansion interface for later convex-analytic arguments. The almost-everywhere quantifier is with respect to volume.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
