This formalizes the algebraic second-difference estimate used in the weak Letwin route.

Let EEE be finite-dimensional, let u,V:E→Ru,V:E\to\mathbb Ru,V:E→R be differentiable, and assume:

  1. uuu is convex and bounded below by mmm;
  2. κ>0\kappa>0κ>0 and V(y)−κ2∥y∥2V(y)-\frac\kappa2\|y\|^2V(y)−2κ∥y∥2 is convex;
  3. ∣DV(∇u(x))[∇u(x)]∣≤C|DV(\nabla u(x))[\nabla u(x)]|\leq C∣DV(∇u(x))[∇u(x)]∣≤C for every xxx;
  4. for every η>0\eta>0η>0, there exists x0x_0x0 such that the penalized second difference Δh2u(y)−ηu(y)\Delta_h^2u(y)-\eta u(y)Δh2u(y)−ηu(y) is maximized at x0x_0x0, and
(V∘∇u−u)(x0+h)+(V∘∇u−u)(x0−h)−2(V∘∇u−u)(x0)≤ηn.(V\circ\nabla u-u)(x_0+h)+(V\circ\nabla u-u)(x_0-h)-2(V\circ\nabla u-u)(x_0)\leq\eta n.(V∘∇u−u)(x0+h)+(V∘∇u−u)(x0−h)−2(V∘∇u−u)(x0)≤ηn.

Then for every x,h∈Ex,h\in Ex,h∈E,

Δh2u(x)≤4∥h∥2κ.\Delta_h^2u(x)\leq\frac{4\|h\|^2}{\kappa}.Δh2u(x)≤κ4∥h∥2.

The result is a reusable global estimate once penalized maximizers with the stated comparison are available.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
