This is a technical estimate at a penalized maximum of a convex function's second difference.

Let EEE be finite-dimensional, let u,V:E→Ru,V:E\to\mathbb Ru,V:E→R be differentiable, let uuu be convex, and let κ>0\kappa>0κ>0. Assume that V(y)−κ2∥y∥2V(y)-\frac\kappa2\|y\|^2V(y)−2κ∥y∥2 is convex. Suppose there is C∈RC\in\mathbb RC∈R such that

∣DV(∇u(x))[∇u(x)]∣≤C\left|D V(\nabla u(x))[\nabla u(x)]\right|\leq C∣DV(∇u(x))[∇u(x)]∣≤C

for every xxx. For η>0\eta>0η>0, x0,h∈Ex_0,h\in Ex0,h∈E, assume that the penalized second difference at x0x_0x0 dominates that at every yyy, and that the corresponding comparison for V∘∇u−uV\circ\nabla u-uV∘∇u−u is at most ηn\eta nηn. Then

Δh2u(x0)≤4∥h∥2κ+2∥h∥η(n+C)κ,\Delta_h^2u(x_0) \leq \frac{4\|h\|^2}{\kappa} +2\|h\|\sqrt{\frac{\eta(n+C)}{\kappa}},Δh2u(x0)≤κ4∥h∥2+2∥h∥κη(n+C),

where Δh2u(x)=u(x+h)+u(x−h)−2u(x)\Delta_h^2u(x)=u(x+h)+u(x-h)-2u(x)Δh2u(x)=u(x+h)+u(x−h)−2u(x). This auxiliary estimate is the algebraic maximum-principle step before letting η↓0\eta\downarrow0η↓0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
