This statement gives the inner-product identity for centered functions on a probability space.

Let μ\muμ be a probability measure on a measurable space and let f,g∈L2(μ)f,g\in L^2(\mu)f,g∈L2(μ). With center defined by subtracting the respective means,

⟨f−∫f dμ, g−∫g dμ⟩L2(μ)=⟨f,g⟩L2(μ)−(∫f dμ)(∫g dμ).\left\langle f-\int f\,d\mu,\,g-\int g\,d\mu\right\rangle_{L^2(\mu)} =\langle f,g\rangle_{L^2(\mu)}-\left(\int f\,d\mu\right)\left(\int g\,d\mu\right).⟨f−∫fdμ,g−∫gdμ⟩L2(μ)=⟨f,g⟩L2(μ)−(∫fdμ)(∫gdμ).

This elementary identity is reusable for variance, orthogonality, and centered-gradient calculations.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
