This proves positive definiteness of the intrinsic covariance operator on the affine-support direction space.

Let EEE be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space with its Borel measurable structure and second-countable topology. Let μ\muμ be a probability measure on EEE with finite second moment, and let

V=direction⁡(affineSupport⁡(μ)).V=\operatorname{direction}(\operatorname{affineSupport}(\mu)).V=direction(affineSupport(μ)).

For every nonzero v∈Vv\in Vv∈V,

0<⟨Cov⁡(intrinsicMeasure⁡(μ))v,v⟩.0<\left\langle \operatorname{Cov}(\operatorname{intrinsicMeasure}(\mu))v,v \right\rangle.0<⟨Cov(intrinsicMeasure(μ))v,v⟩.

The theorem supplies strict positivity after restricting the law to its intrinsic affine support, even when the ambient covariance may have null directions.

Formalization Note The finite second moment is expressed by MemLp id 2; no positive-dimensionality assumption is made.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
