This is a metric separation lemma for finitely many pairwise disjoint compact sets.

Let XXX be a metric space, let N∈NN\in\mathbb NN∈N, and let Ki⊆XK_i\subseteq XKi⊆X be compact for every i∈Ni\in\mathbb Ni∈N. Assume that distinct sets are pairwise disjoint:

i≠j  ⟹  Ki∩Kj=∅.i\ne j\implies K_i\cap K_j=\varnothing.i=j⟹Ki∩Kj=∅.

Then there exists a radius ρ>0\rho>0ρ>0 such that for all distinct i,j<Ni,j<Ni,j<N, the metric thickenings are disjoint:

thickening⁡(ρ,Ki)∩thickening⁡(ρ,Kj)=∅.\operatorname{thickening}(\rho,K_i)\cap \operatorname{thickening}(\rho,K_j)=\varnothing.thickening(ρ,Ki)∩thickening(ρ,Kj)=∅.

The Lean declaration is exists_thickening_pairwise_disjoint_readable. Only the first NNN indices are required to have disjoint thickenings; the conclusion makes no assertion about indices at or beyond NNN.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
