This is a finite-set identity expressing a Vandermonde convolution for two fixed subsets.

Let α\alphaα be a type with decidable equality, let UUU be a finite subset of α\alphaα, let ddd be a natural number, and let F,F′F,F'F,F′ be ddd-element subsets of UUU. For each natural number sss from 000 through ddd, count the sss-element subsets SSS of UUU satisfying S⊆F∩F′S \subseteq F \cap F'S⊆F∩F′. Then

∑s=0d(ds)∣{S⊆U:∣S∣=s and S⊆F∩F′}∣=(d+∣F∩F′∣d).\sum_{s=0}^{d} \binom{d}{s} \left|\{S \subseteq U : |S|=s \text{ and } S \subseteq F \cap F'\}\right| = \binom{d+|F \cap F'|}{d}.s=0∑d(sd)∣{S⊆U:∣S∣=s and S⊆F∩F′}∣=(dd+∣F∩F′∣).

This identity is a reusable combinatorial summation formula, with the summands counting subsets of the intersection and weighting them by binomial coefficients.

Formalization Note The summation is implemented over Finset.range (d + 1), and the counted families use Finset.powersetCard followed by Finset.filter; binomial coefficients are represented by Nat.choose.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
