This is a sigma-algebra join lemma for independence.

Let (Ω,F,P)(\Omega,\mathcal F,P)(Ω,F,P) be a probability space and let m1,m2,m3⊆Fm_1,m_2,m_3\subseteq\mathcal Fm1,m2,m3⊆F be measurable spaces. Assume:

  1. m1⊥m3m_1\perp m_3m1⊥m3 under PPP.
  2. m2⊥(m1∨m3)m_2\perp(m_1\vee m_3)m2⊥(m1∨m3) under PPP.

Then the join of the first two sigma-algebras is independent of the third:

m1∨m2⊥m3.m_1\vee m_2\perp m_3.m1∨m2⊥m3.

This technical result packages the product-measure calculation needed to iterate independence along an ordered family of sigma-algebras.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
