This proves preservation of real epigraph convexity under affine subtraction.

Let EEE be a real inner-product space, let f:E→R‾f:E\to\overline{\mathbb R}f:E→R, let a∈Ea\in Ea∈E, and let b∈Rb\in\mathbb Rb∈R. Assume the real epigraph

{(p,r)∈E×R:f(p)≤r}\{(p,r)\in E\times\mathbb R:f(p)\le r\}{(p,r)∈E×R:f(p)≤r}

is convex. Define affineSubtract by

affineSubtract⁡(f,a,b)(x)=f(x)−(⟨a,x⟩+b).\operatorname{affineSubtract}(f,a,b)(x)=f(x)-\bigl(\langle a,x\rangle+b\bigr).affineSubtract(f,a,b)(x)=f(x)−(⟨a,x⟩+b).

Then its real epigraph is convex:

{(p,r):affineSubtract⁡(f,a,b)(p)≤r} is convex.\{(p,r):\operatorname{affineSubtract}(f,a,b)(p)\le r\}\text{ is convex}.{(p,r):affineSubtract(f,a,b)(p)≤r} is convex.

This is measure-free infrastructure for affine normalization of extended-real convex potentials.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
